Should we keep the money we found?

This morning at soft play Ds found four £1 at the bottom of a slide. He was really excited but I explained how it wasn't ours and it had fallen out of someone's pocket and we handed it in to the reception. Unaware of the £4, on the way home DH found £100 in rolled up notes. He stood there for a while and didn't see anyone looking for it. I feel like it's good karma and we should keep it. My husband thinks we should give it to the police. (We are low income so feels like a lot of money)
So
YABU - you should practice what you preach to your son, hand it in.
YANBU - enjoy the good karma and keep it

People here are weird…….. “ couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t hand it in “. 🤪. When I find something I just shove it in my pocket and don’t give it a second thought, just oooo lucky me and off I go 😀.

I found a nice fleece Berghuas beanie the other day, took in home washed it …… fits lovely 👑

I like the optimism in this post. Maybe elsewhere there are forces with enough money to adequately provide enough officers and enough left over for a knees up at least once a year.

Yes I shall hope that is true.

I don't know why you're so arsey about this; I haven't suggested it's funded from the public purse.

AuntEater · 18/10/2021 21:57

Hand it in. You know that's the right thing to do.

samesign · 18/10/2021 22:00

If I found £100 or any notes and no other info with it in the street I'd keep it.
If in a wallet where It could be traced it then I'd hand it in.

CatJumperTwat · 18/10/2021 22:07

@Exboltqueen

I know it is the right thing to do. It just seemed too much of a coincidence to happen on the same day. I'm doubtful we will get it back though its probably drug money due to the area it was found. But yes he will go to the police station in the am
Yeah, an unbelievable coincidence. Much more likely it's some mystical cosmic force called "karma".
NativityDreaming · 18/10/2021 22:08

It is theft to keep the money. There was a woman charged for keeping £20 she found in a store. She ended up pleading guilty and having to pay the money back, a surcharge, and court costs!

nannybeach · 18/10/2021 22:12

Some unbelievable posts on here! I would hand it in. Having had a puse stolen while out shopping, and back in the day when you were paid cash my Ex H, dropped his entire wage packet, or it was removed from his pocket, horrible. My son when he was at primary school found a womans wallet, chock full of credit cards, lot of notes, drivers licence etc, she worked at a local residential school. I took it there she didn't even phone to thank me son. He found a watch on Brighton Beach, my DH had been rushed to Hospital, so we didn't have time to go to the nearest Police station. He had to go into our loal Police station, about an unrelated matter, they asked where he got the watch, we explained, they were horrible, obviously didn't believe us. Am proud of my DKs for being so honest

Pantsomime · 18/10/2021 22:13

It’s not yours to keep

StoneofDestiny · 18/10/2021 22:15

Sad how many wouldn't hand in lost property. It's theft!

Carriecakes80 · 18/10/2021 22:16

Hand it in, I would want to keep it to, but I was once standing behind a lady at the cashpoint, she got her money, the car behind us beeped, she turned, dropped a wad of cash but was already in the car and gone. There was no-one around, I was already mentally spending the money and treating the kids, then I thought about my Mum, and how hard she works for every damned penny, and how angry I would be if that had been her....
I handed it in, and I felt great as I got a call a week later saying they finally got hold of the lady and she had been so relieved.
I did win £600 on the Bingo later that month which meant we finally had a telly again, so I think I got my karma! :-)

HTH1 · 18/10/2021 22:21

I would hand it in, especially if found in a shop or similar. I lost a really nice fleece Berghuas beanie the other day and it wasn’t handed in Wink

@HTH1 is this yours hahahaha
TractorAndHeadphones · 18/10/2021 22:34

@Itsnotover

I would hand it in because if nobody claims it you'll get it anyway.

£100 is a lot of money for some people. It could be someone's food, electric or gas money. Ime rich folk don't carry that much cash around.

But a lot of people (myself included) have handed money in only for it never to be seen again. I would rather leave my details to be contacted - although I suppose someone dishonest could come themselves and claim thaty they lost the money.
MrsFin · 18/10/2021 22:36

The person who lost it might be worse off than you.
It's not yours. Hand it in.

funinthesun19 · 18/10/2021 22:36

I would hand it in. I’d want to keep it of course, but that money could belong to someone on a low income too. I know I’d be stressing about it and worrying so in the end it wouldn’t be worth it.

The other side of my brain would be saying, “If you lost £100 nobody would hand your money in so why are you gonna do it? Keep keep keep.”

AlbertBridge · 18/10/2021 22:38

I feel awful now. If I found a wallet with money in, I'd hand it in to the police. But if I've ever found loose money in the the street, I've kept it.

I once followed a woman to a cash pint. When she left I saw she'd left the money she'd withdrawn just hanging out of the machine! I called her back so she could get it.

But I found a £20 note blowing along the pavement last week snd happily kept it.

HappyDays101010 · 18/10/2021 22:40

The £4 probably felt like £100 to your DS.

huuskymam · 18/10/2021 22:48

It's not good karma to keep something thats not yours. You don't know if the person who lost it is in a worse situation than you. Had it into the police and let he play centre staff know.

LaurenKelsey · 18/10/2021 23:00

Wow. Hand it in. Are you worried the owner might claim it? 🤣

Eggsdancing · 18/10/2021 23:00

The police won't take it. I once found about 120 quid in notes and went to the police, they gave it back and said that since it wasn't in a wallet it was impossible to recover and to keep it.

Kosmin · 18/10/2021 23:01

Peter Hitchens told a story of finding some money on a ferry as a boy. He handed it in and there was an announcement to all passengers that some money had been lost. He then observed a trail of men each claiming they had lost various amounts of money in various denominations, but none of them guessed correctly.

ShrillSiren · 18/10/2021 23:01

If I found a purse/wallet I'd happily hand it in or find the owner.

If I found money on its own I'd keep it with no second thoughts.

HeartvsBrain · 18/10/2021 23:03

It is a very long time since I found any money, but when I have in the past (once in library, once in shop, once in car park) I gave my name and phone number into the relevant places (the police for the car park one), and said I had found money/purse, but I didn't say how much or describe the purse), so that they could give anyone asking my phone number. Purse got returned to owner who sent thank you note and a fiver, cash never asked for - I waited 6 months before spending it.

DrGoogleSaysSo · 18/10/2021 23:13

I would think it could be someone's pension money, for instance and I would bring the money to the police.

Zugs · 18/10/2021 23:15

You already know what you're going to do.

A dishonest person would not have thought twice.

You are an honest person.
