Should we keep the money we found?

This morning at soft play Ds found four £1 at the bottom of a slide. He was really excited but I explained how it wasn't ours and it had fallen out of someone's pocket and we handed it in to the reception. Unaware of the £4, on the way home DH found £100 in rolled up notes. He stood there for a while and didn't see anyone looking for it. I feel like it's good karma and we should keep it. My husband thinks we should give it to the police. (We are low income so feels like a lot of money)
So
YABU - you should practice what you preach to your son, hand it in.
YANBU - enjoy the good karma and keep it

@Chumleymouse

People here are weird…….. “ couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t hand it in “. 🤪. When I find something I just shove it in my pocket and don’t give it a second thought, just oooo lucky me and off I go 😀.

I found a nice fleece Berghuas beanie the other day, took in home washed it …… fits lovely 👑

Theft.... Pure and simple...

You're nice...

In the first couple of weeks of having our 1st newborn my husband somehow managed to take money out of the cash point and in his sleepy haze he left it in the cash point! £100! I was eternally grateful to the good samaritan who handed it in. We were sleep deprived and broke!

Tessabelle74 · 19/10/2021 17:54

That could be the money someone low income like yourselves has saved for Christmas presents. Do the right thing and hand it in

Pelsall116 · 19/10/2021 18:04

The bottom line is, if you had lost it and whoever had found it hadn't handed it in and kept it for themselves how would you feel?

whistleryukon · 19/10/2021 18:12

It's always the universe, manifesting, law of attraction people who have these hit and miss moral compasses

LalalalalalaLand123 · 19/10/2021 18:16

My policy in life OP: always do "the right thing". It's almost always clear what that is.

Blackberrycream · 19/10/2021 18:28

@JovialNickname

Take it take it. Anyone who has £100 rolled up and loses it isn't poor. Even if it's an old person they'll be rattling around in their massive house that you will never afford collecting their free winter fuel allowance. Statistically you are poorer than anyone that casually loses £100. Keep it and use it well!
Well aren’t you a lovely person. Not a clue either. My Nan lost a similar amount. It was actually her savings which she carried around with her. We didn’t know she was doing it until she lost it. She lived in a council flat, not that it should matter but maybe it does in your moral universe. Statistically, you will be better off than many. You are talking about stealing and trying to claim the moral high ground whilst doing so. It doesn’t wash… I’m glad you’re handing it in Op. Either way it will be the best outcome. You may get it if anyone is really not bothered but if it is claimed, you will know that your actions haven’t left someone in a potentially precarious position. If it’s drug money, you will definitely get it!
Plastic01 · 19/10/2021 18:29

Hand it in OP. The only people I know that carry about that amount of money are construction worker types who are paid in cash - do the decent thing.

Yeah at little old people bless them

Bleachmycloths · 19/10/2021 18:32

Post on FB and ask any claimants to say where they they think they lost it, the amount and a description of how it was wrapped.
Sounds precious to me. I couldn’t keep it.

Cupcakeschocolate · 19/10/2021 18:32

Out of interest... how would the police reunite it with the owner. I mean you could get a chance turn up and say oh I lost £100 and where's the proof.... I would hand it in but has me thinking...

The specific amount and potential location.
Cupcakeschocolate · 19/10/2021 18:34

True...

Sandfairy69 · 19/10/2021 18:55

Can’t believe your even asking.

Mollymoostoo · 19/10/2021 19:06

Theft by finding is a crime. Assuming CCTV didn't see him, or could be drug money and you could find yourself in trouble in the long run.

Dnaltocs · 19/10/2021 19:11

To keep it is theft. Morally and legally. At minimum rate someone perhaps worked a day and a half for that cash.
£100 is a lot of money.

75% of a pensioners weekly income.

A couple of months school lunches.
Food for a family of 4 for a week.
Hand it in ASAP.
Someone is perhaps having a sleepless night having lost this.

mountbattenbergcake · 19/10/2021 19:11

Intrigued by all the rolling of money, I’m a folder.

I had a fleece Berghaus beanie. It belonged to my Dad and was one he had for many years and wore a lot when out hiking and skiing. It was one of the items I kept after he died (I got a lot of comfort from keeping clothing items from both my mum and dad. I kept a number of items, but I particularly liked those that I could actually make use of.)

Unfortunately I left the hat at the leisure centre and it never got handed in.

This was some years ago, so clearly not the same one you found.

Just bear in mind that even boring, everyday items can sometimes have great sentimental value to their owners.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 19/10/2021 20:01

@SleepingStandingUp

It seems hypercritical to give in £4 2+which likely no one will notice / think to ask for but you're happy to pocket £100 because the Universe likes you. It doesn't. That money is also someone's money. What if they're low income too?
Completely agree and was my first thoughts too.

Give money to police. Thats a lot of money to anyone, even if you are not low income!

AnneTwacky · 19/10/2021 20:03

Don't keep it. It's a lot of money and it's not yours.

Why do you think the universe would reward you for not keeping £4, especially when you're looking to us, to validate taking £100.

pinkpirlie · 19/10/2021 20:06

I found $3000 (AUD) once when I was a broke backpacker in an envelope in the middle of a road crossing. I took it to the police and they said if no one claimed it then I would get it back.

They somehow tracked down the person who withdrew it from the bank (to pay a trades person) and got it back to the guy (who said he hasn't reported it as he was too nervous to tell his wife he lost it!!).

Never got a financial reward, but he did put a thank you note in the local paper which someone I knew noticed.

I would definitely hand in £100 to the police. Hopefully if no one collects it, you'll get to keep it and won't feel guilty doing so.

Amaksy · 19/10/2021 20:07

I once found £100 in the cinema and handed it in. They said to check 2 days after if unclaimed and I did- it was unclaimed but they gave me 2 tickets back instead. I asked what happened to the money as I believe you can't really add £100 to the till without anyone noticing ah well!
