I am really bothered by the number of people (adults) who can't spell. The standard of literacy on here is high (except for the fishy one, but we'll let her off because she's so funny ) but as I browse various forums I become more and more disgusted at the nation. I'm not the best speller in the world but it's really basic words I saw. I admit i've been browsing dating profiles and out of 20 that i've seen, 4 have had basic words spelt wrong!

OP posts:
TheMincePiedMadHouse · 09/12/2007 21:19

I have to admit I am very poor at spelling - dyslexic, but I do try, especaily on official stuff.

twinsetandpearls · 09/12/2007 21:21

could it be typing rather than spelling? My spelling and punctuation is good but my typing especially when typing posts on here is awful.

ElasticAnimal · 09/12/2007 21:22

we need a spell check

clutteredup · 09/12/2007 21:23

My typing is bad too mainly due to very slow typing speed, i'd have forgotten what I was going to say if I kept going back to correct myself and thread would have long since died.

twinsetandpearls · 09/12/2007 21:23

I think we need to feel that we can post without feeling judged on our grammar, spelling and puncuation.

walkinginaWILKIEwonderland · 09/12/2007 21:23

I think people type and don't spell check rather than not being able to spell.

My absolute pet hate is text speak.

Alambil · 09/12/2007 21:24

Dyslexia is a genuine problem though.

General ignorance in paying attention when spelling is not.

I am amazed at my own mother when she spells "tomato" or "potato" with an "e" on the end - it drives me insane!

dingdongbelgianbunsonhigh · 09/12/2007 21:24

That would be 'I've been browsing' and 'out of the 20 I've seen' would it . Easy to be judgemental isn't it.

But yes - I know what you mean. I'm told I am pedantic! At least I can spell it!!!

Alambil · 09/12/2007 21:25

I mean in official documents / interview papers for example - we certainly shouldn't be judged on here because speed of conversations means typing standards go out the window sometimes!

jinglebells2shoessmells · 09/12/2007 21:28

and need to get a grip

lilolilbethlehem · 09/12/2007 21:28

I have several friends who teach, and my DH and I never fail to be amazed at their dreadful spelling.

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 09/12/2007 21:29

I always try my best to spell everything right the first time on here, but I type quite fast and if I'm completely submerged in a conversation on here, I just type rapidly and press send. I often look at it after I've posted and think 'doh!' Most of the times its letters round the wrong way though and not actually spelling mistakes!

merrylissiemas · 09/12/2007 21:33

my speling in rl is vgood butt my tieping is rubish

Curmudgeonlett · 09/12/2007 21:34

came in purely to applaud correct spelling in thread title

didn't know it would be relevant to OP though

nickernacker · 09/12/2007 21:34

Loike whjo's axctukally boytheresd, rewalluy?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2007 21:35

A lot of it is typing and biscuit crumbs/juice in the keyboard. It doesn't bother me on MN particularly. Not beyond a passing sigh at how standards are dropping in general.

It doesn't form my opinion of the poster though... unless they use txt.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 09/12/2007 21:35

My typing is awful, I forever typo and don't bother re-reading the posts to see what I've done right or wrong.
However genuine typos are normally easily identifiable as as spelling mistakes so normally you can tell if someone has typo'd or just can't spell.
My pet hate is 'your' instead of 'you're' tbh. It really isn't that hard a rule to learn.

twinsetandpearls · 09/12/2007 21:35

I sometimes think that I should edit/check my posts as people know I am a teacher and would not want to give people another excuse to teacher bash due to my badly typed posts. But by the time I have typed and edited a post what I have to say is irrelevent or I look a tit as I say something that has been said or becomes offensive or upsetting due to information revealed while I am editing or typing slowly trying to type accuratly.

I would rather look a tit for bad spelling than talking out of date drivel that may even offend.

nickernacker · 09/12/2007 21:35

did merrylissiexmas say in RL she has a very good butt?

merrylissiemas · 09/12/2007 21:37

seriosly, i don't use caps and often get carried away (my space bar has also disappeared into ds's toy box)but i do try, and if i'm not sure i put (sp) at the end of the word

merrylissiemas · 09/12/2007 21:38

...

merrylissiemas · 09/12/2007 21:38

pmsl seriously

slim22 · 09/12/2007 21:39

Is this for real?

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 09/12/2007 21:39

Mine is mis-typing rather than poor spelling per se. I even managed to balls up an online check-in for Ryanair the other day.
