Adele’s single-boring and self absorbed ( and slightly cringeworthy)?

Firstly, I love Adele’s music and very much admire her character and was very much looking forward to her new music.

However, her new song never goes anywhere. There is nothing, musically, to make your hair stand on end or really want to listen. If I were having a conversation in the car, I would not notice it in the background.

Of course, her voice is, as ever, sublime, but many of the ornaments sound forced and some good clear long notes would have been far better. In addition, after about 90 seconds it is , effectively, ‘on repeat’.

As for the words, I can just imagine her child listening to them as a teen or young adult and cringing.

Of course, the professional reviews love it, but I suspect they would not review Adele badly regardless of what she put out.

So AIBU or do I just not appreciate what is being done here (open to any opinions)?

@AlphabetAerobics

Well I was certainly snobby about her - thought she was just “Hannah Montana” Disney brat. Then I stumbled across the Jolene when having a Dolly Day Grin - started paying attention and then when she did the thing with mark ronson. Sold!
That was me too, right down to being snobby until I saw her version of Jolene. Mark Ronson is right, she’s exceptionally talented.

Miley was fabulous at the manchester bombings concert. Seems a nice person too.

StartingGrid · 16/10/2021 17:32

I usually love her voice, but the pitch of the chorus sets my teeth on edge!

ScienceSensibility · 16/10/2021 18:13

I find her very tedious as a singer. So affected and repetitive. I’m aware when her music is issued, of course, as the PR avalanche is ridiculous.

wow nine pages of pulling a women apart. The best of MN - no really it is... maybe it will go in classics..

@NeonTetras

1. No one loves 100% of a singer's music. That's why there used to be A side single and B side. Or hits and just 'filler' music. No one loves every single song from a singer. No one buys every single of a singer. Do you you honestly expect to? Is that what you're saying?
  1. Singers often draw from their real life and lived experience when writing songs.

You are being wholly unreasonable on both counts.

Not true for me. I love all of George Michael's records including all his Wham songs.

I also love all of Simply Red's music.

I am sure there are others but they are the two I immediately thought of

So you're not allowed an opinion now, if its about a female?
daisyjgrey · 16/10/2021 19:00

They all just sound the same 🤷🏼‍♀️

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/10/2021 19:04

eves not to do with her being a woman, there was a thread about Elton John the other day. Similarly, I could start a thread expressing my dislike for Ed Sheeran being bland or samey - some would agree, some would fight his corner. Not everything is misogyny or misandry. misanthropy, maybe Wink

mum2jakie · 16/10/2021 19:10

I don't see why it's unreasonable or a show of jealousy to offer a negative opinion of the song. I love Adele and think she's a fantastically talented singer and personality but think this latest song is shit!

No not really, it’s just people talking about a pop song. Had a listen a few times and it’s not delivered with much passion or believability. She’s sung some great stuff and I love her voice too but this ones a bit magnolia really. And the intro is self indulgent, not needed and is a bit jarring.

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2021 19:16

I like Ed Sheeran.
I like all kinds of music though , anyone creative and a songwriter is fine by me!

DrSbaitso · 16/10/2021 19:24

Ooh, did someone with an exceptionally feminine username come on to a thread about a pop song to comment on how bitchy and catty women are?

Oh fgs, it’s nowt of the kind. I also cannot abide Elton John, Mick Jagger and Ed Sheeran (all his songs sound the same). Just cos she’s a Woman it doesn’t mean we have to live her music/songwriting/voice.
cansu · 16/10/2021 19:26

it is very dull. It's a shame that she can't put her huge vocal talent to better use. The song was very very boring and standard.

Monkeymilkshake · 16/10/2021 19:43

Oh! I really like the new song!

Springplanting · 16/10/2021 20:00

the video is very very similar for Hello. Black and white, wind blowing, her on the blower and the dusty deserted tooty house that could do with the once over from a damp cloth.

I thought there would be something new and fresh. Adele also said once in an interview that she would not do any more albums named after her age.

Don't like the way she sings 'didn't get the chayance'

Apart from that, it's perfick Grin

AssemblySquare · 16/10/2021 20:06

She’s boring and self absorbed…. Just like her music. Can’t bare her. She’s even worse than Coldplay which is saying something!

DDMAC · 16/10/2021 20:12

I can’t listen to her at all, her voice goes through me. Overrated just like Beyoncé

RobertaFirmino · 16/10/2021 20:27

@JaniieJones

'Adele Adkins is just playing the role on a stage. She is as convincing as Mrs Overall.'

So true. The sultry gazes, the husky singing voice, then she speaks and she's like Kat from Eastenders. I mean good on her for her millions and yes her songs are ok but this all hail Adele bollocks in the media is nauseating.

I'm no fan myself but let's not slate for her speaking accent. Amy Winehouse, Paloma Faith and Lisa Stansfield all speak (or spoke, in the case of AW) in quite a distinctive accent themselves.
SisterAgatha · 16/10/2021 20:37

I’m actually a little bit sad that everyone is slating how she speaks. I speak the same, everyone I know has that voice. It’s a local accent.

It’s not got much to do with the quality of the latest single either or her song writing ability so how about keeping comments about that instead of ripping her entire essence to shreds.

I think on a thread of 222 messages only one or two have mentioned her London accent. So don't get it out of proportion.

Mostly it's about the song itself.

Springplanting · 16/10/2021 21:00

no problem with her London accent. It's the affected 'chayance' in an American 'deep south' twang that grates.

mum2jakie · 16/10/2021 21:54

I like her London accent and her personality. I just don't rate this song

DuchessOfDisaster · 16/10/2021 22:03

I am bored with the album names being numbers. That's self indulgent. I am waiting for '85' from the old folks' home in 50 years' time.
