Adele’s single-boring and self absorbed ( and slightly cringeworthy)?

Firstly, I love Adele’s music and very much admire her character and was very much looking forward to her new music.

However, her new song never goes anywhere. There is nothing, musically, to make your hair stand on end or really want to listen. If I were having a conversation in the car, I would not notice it in the background.

Of course, her voice is, as ever, sublime, but many of the ornaments sound forced and some good clear long notes would have been far better. In addition, after about 90 seconds it is , effectively, ‘on repeat’.

As for the words, I can just imagine her child listening to them as a teen or young adult and cringing.

Of course, the professional reviews love it, but I suspect they would not review Adele badly regardless of what she put out.

So AIBU or do I just not appreciate what is being done here (open to any opinions)?

  1. No one loves 100% of a singer's music. That's why there used to be A side single and B side. Or hits and just 'filler' music. No one loves every single song from a singer. No one buys every single of a singer. Do you you honestly expect to? Is that what you're saying?
  1. Singers often draw from their real life and lived experience when writing songs.

You are being wholly unreasonable on both counts.

@TSSDNCOP

Anyone want to predict she will be number 1 in the Women list jo wileys doing on R2?
Hmm, maybe Adele !!
the80sweregreat · 16/10/2021 14:55

It's Adele with 21!
No surprises .. as Radiohead once sung!

TSSDNCOP · 16/10/2021 14:55

You win!!!

DestinationProcastination · 16/10/2021 14:55

I'm not really a huge fan of Adele (I like two songs - set fire to the rain and someone like you) but I think people are being a bit harsh saying "she's 30, not a child ffs" and such - He was 17 years older than her and they've been together since she was 21/22 years old - and she got pregnant very quickly. I can see exactly why she'd be saying things like never getting to know the world around her - as somebody else who met their older husband when they were 21 I get exactly where she's coming from with that!

Having said that, not a fan of the song - it doesn't really go anywhere and it is just the same few lines on repeat.

TSSDNCOP · 16/10/2021 14:56

Fair enough that it's Someone Like You

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2021 14:56

Maybe when she is 85 she'll write ' the care home ' songs!!
Her version of Lovesong by the Cure is very good though.

At which point you have to listen with no sharp objects in easy reach

@SequinsandStiIettos

Discussing her new album in Vogue, Adele said: “I wanted to explain to him through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness.

“It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”

As a child of divorce, that reads as very me, me, me.
Angelo doesn't have to go easy on her at all.
She had the right to leave, make her choices and have joint custody.
Her son has the right to resent those choices as an adult.
Plus, I would argue that 29 is not a child and two years later, looking back retrspectively, she cannot claim adulthood now.

Love Rolling in the deep. Hate the rest of her work.

As a child of divorce, that reads as very me, me, me.

Totally. It's all about her bloody self expression. I know the type, often with some sort of creative background. It's all about they voice, their self expressions their pain, them explaining themselves, being seen, heard and understood by their audience. The same people are the worst listen and understand others.

Instead of making a navel gazing song to justify herself to her son maybe she should accepting that it's about his wounds and not draw attention to hers. She is treating her son like her audience. It's quite sad actually and she probably has some deep issues. Not that it's our business. She does seem like an interesting woman but looks much older than her years and acts younger than she is.

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/10/2021 15:10

never thank you for that link - lyrically excellent
alphabet agree. Slide Away is pure perfection. (And Miley has more right to point out that she was a child when she met Liam than Adele does Wink)

She knocks it out the park with live, vocal performances
the80sweregreat · 16/10/2021 15:19

She writes about what she knows and been through , it's obviously a winning formula and she is popular.
However , I did read once that '21' was the most donated CD to the charity shops , so maybe people can only play the CDs a few times before deciding they are too depressing or just unwanted gifts for mums or grans who much prefer Metallica or AC/DC!

DumbestBlonde · 16/10/2021 15:27

I knew the nails and hand movements reminded me of something!
(Apologies to anyone who likes very long dark curved nails....)

Adele’s single-boring and self absorbed ( and slightly cringeworthy)?
MaryBoBary · 16/10/2021 15:33

I was disappointed to be honest. Thought it would be something more worth the wait. Agree - boring.

Grapewrath · 16/10/2021 15:44

I’m not fussed either way on Adele, but Someone like you was breathtaking.
This new song is dull af but I appreciate the sentiment having been a young mum myself

Grapewrath · 16/10/2021 15:45

Also agree with those who prefer Miley!

todaysdilemma · 16/10/2021 15:52

I thought it was fab song! And really grows on you the more you listen to it, poignant and hopeful.

Her voice really makes it goosebump tingling. And given how many hits it has already had on Youtube and the rave reviews on other forums, a lot of people concur.

Hometown Glory and Make you feel my Love are incredibly beautiful songs, how can anyone dislike them. But maybe you need to have lived a certain sort of life with a lot of chop and change to really resonate with it.

She is a ray of sunshine! And she looked gorgeous in her BBC1 interview with Greg James. He did sound a wee bit sycophantic though, but maybe he is just a massive fan boy. National Treasure Adele is.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 16/10/2021 15:53

Total bore off. Fed up with hearing her bleating on about some misfortune or other.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 16/10/2021 16:24

Taylor is an amazing lyricist. She has so many beautiful songs. 'Tolerate it' is on a similar theme and is probably even better.

While you were out building other worlds, where was I?
Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire?
I made you my temple, my mural, my sky
Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life
Drawing hearts in the byline
Always taking up too much space or time
You assume I'm fine
But what would you do if I, I
Break free and leave us in ruins
Took this dagger in me and removed it
Gain the weight of you then lose it
Believe me, I could do it
If it's all in my head tell me now
Tell me I've got it wrong somehow
I know my love should be celebrated
But you tolerate it

wetpants · 16/10/2021 16:27

I agree re: Miley Cyrus. She’s is amazing singer and too much underrated.

DrManhattan · 16/10/2021 16:53

Miley singing 'why do you only call me when you're high' is absolutely amazing.

DrSbaitso · 16/10/2021 16:56

I don't think she's underrated (she's great), but as she's American, she doesn't get as much mad hype here as Adele.

AlphabetAerobics · 16/10/2021 16:59

Well I was certainly snobby about her - thought she was just “Hannah Montana” Disney brat. Then I stumbled across the Jolene when having a Dolly Day Grin - started paying attention and then when she did the thing with mark ronson. Sold!

Rosesareyellow · 16/10/2021 17:00

I agree re: Miley Cyrus. She’s is amazing singer and too much underrated.

Absolutely.
I don’t get the hype around Adele when all her music has a very particular style and essentially sounds the same. Which is great of course if you love that style and you know what you’re getting. Everyone was exited about this new song, but it is just another Adele song - great vocals, sad sounding… nothing to surprise you there.
But many other artists create songs that sound nothing like each other, like Miley Cyrus, constantly keeping us on our toes with their music and I personally much prefer that.
