Adele’s single-boring and self absorbed ( and slightly cringeworthy)?

Firstly, I love Adele’s music and very much admire her character and was very much looking forward to her new music.

However, her new song never goes anywhere. There is nothing, musically, to make your hair stand on end or really want to listen. If I were having a conversation in the car, I would not notice it in the background.

Of course, her voice is, as ever, sublime, but many of the ornaments sound forced and some good clear long notes would have been far better. In addition, after about 90 seconds it is , effectively, ‘on repeat’.

As for the words, I can just imagine her child listening to them as a teen or young adult and cringing.

Of course, the professional reviews love it, but I suspect they would not review Adele badly regardless of what she put out.

So AIBU or do I just not appreciate what is being done here (open to any opinions)?

Yanbu. I tend to have Radio Two on in my Doggy Funbus and my heart sank when Ken Bruce informed us that it would be next week's record of the week. I think I'm going to have to put a few CDs in the van!

Snoozer11 · 16/10/2021 12:08

They married in 2018 and were separated in 2019. Hardly the most devastating of divorces.

I don't find Adele likeable at all. I remember watching her at a festival speaking to a little girl on stage, and then 10 seconds later swearing constantly.

I think she believes her own hype.

mydogisthebest · 16/10/2021 12:24

@EdenFlower

I think Adele is a bit like George Michael was, addicted to heartbreak- she can't write unless she is unhappy and her songs reflect that.

All the hand movements in the video are creepy!

Oh please, George Michael's songs were never all depressing and sung in a whiny voice.

George had lots of lively and uplifting songs and even the sad ones didn't sound anywhere near as depressing as Adele's songs.

I also personally think he was a million times a better singer

HeadPain · 16/10/2021 12:44

Is she saying she was a child when she got married ? She was 29 when they married. They started dating when she was 23, she had Angelo at 24.

Separated in 2018, within seven months of marriage.
Hetty0 · 16/10/2021 12:47

@Waxonwaxoff0 she fell pregnant with her child while her partner was still married (albeit separated).

'I’ve learnt a lot of blistering home truths about myself along the way. I’ve shed many layers, but also wrapped myself in new ones. Discovered genuinely useful and wholesome mentalities to lead with, and I feel like I’ve finally found my feeling again'

From an interview. Just get over yourself fgs.

maddiemookins16mum · 16/10/2021 12:52

I’ve never been a fan, she’s everso whingy in every song she does. Woe is me etc.

ThePlumVan · 16/10/2021 12:56

Completely agree - was so looking forward to it too Sad

What does that even mean?
Complete indulgent twaddle!
🤣🤣

Discussing her new album in Vogue, Adele said: “I wanted to explain to him through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness.

“It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”

As a child of divorce, that reads as very me, me, me.
Angelo doesn't have to go easy on her at all.
She had the right to leave, make her choices and have joint custody.
Her son has the right to resent those choices as an adult.
Plus, I would argue that 29 is not a child and two years later, looking back retrspectively, she cannot claim adulthood now.

Love Rolling in the deep. Hate the rest of her work.

DrManhattan · 16/10/2021 13:32

Proper depressing dirge.
So over rated.

AlphabetAerobics · 16/10/2021 13:44

For those of you looking for “divorce genre” for the car with power ballads/stevie nicks vibe/rock chick - may I present Miley Cyrus?

I know right - but fuck me is she good. Not putting down whichever-hemsworth himself and plenty of acknowledgment she’s not “wife material”.

Plus… if you want to see how talented she is - YouTube her live Jolene and Zombie - Dolores would give a nod of approval.

Adele? Zzzzz. Hypocritical tax-dodging twat.

tattychicken · 16/10/2021 13:45

I'm really disappointed. I love Adele. Think it's far too genetically Adele sounding and agree re her being an adult, not a child, making the decisions she made. And really don't like some of the lyrics eg
"I changed who I was to put you both first but now I give up"

Jmaho · 16/10/2021 13:47

She's a great singer and seems like a decent person but she has been elevated to megastar proportions bit like Beyonce. I actually met with a few friends last night and my one friend was absolutely gushing over her and said she downloaded the song straight away and was just crying when she heard it. Bit odd and over the top of you ask me. She's just a person with a good voice and decent enough songs. Just don't get the hero worshipping

CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 16/10/2021 13:49

@Evesgarden

I wonder at the state of people mental health when they purposely start negative threads then other negative people gather to bitch.

There are so many threads like this lately.

I love Adele she is on my drive to work playlist, I think other songs she does are better, maybe this one is grower. But never have I felt compelled to start a thread about not liking some ones song, its just not that a big deal. Just turn it over. And its always a women singer - every-single -time.

Maybe if you DM her she will write you a personal apology for your disappointment or distaste because your so special ...

You’re talking negatively about people with mental health problems
the80sweregreat · 16/10/2021 13:49

Stevie nicks was much better at the put downs in lyrics!

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 16/10/2021 13:51

@nothingbutthetruthsohelp

Don't like her since she lost weight
Don’t be such a stereotype
GiantHaystacks2021 · 16/10/2021 14:08

Not into her at all.
Never was, never will be.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 16/10/2021 14:17

The song is awful. Is the whole album going to be centred around a divorce she's accepting no blame for?

She got married the day before her 30th birthday, with her Titanic themed birthday party doubling as a wedding celebration apparently... who in their right mind has a Titanic themed wedding party??

I'm hugely biased because I love her, but Taylor Swift has a MUCH better song relating to divorce (and she's never actually gone through it herself).

It's not a belter, definitely an album track, but so beautiful lyrically.

Oblomov21 · 16/10/2021 14:22

Most comments are that is the Samey bog standard. Agree.

AliceinBorderland · 16/10/2021 14:25

However, her new song never goes anywhere. There is nothing, musically, to make your hair stand on end or really want to listen.

Very few pieces of music have given me goosebumps or move me to tears.

The pieces that have were all classical. No words but simply made my heart soar.

It is a bit of a stretch for a pop song to be that great.

Zeev · 16/10/2021 14:29

I usually love Adele - Rolling in the Deep is fucking brilliant - but this new song is super, super boring.

TSSDNCOP · 16/10/2021 14:32

Anyone want to predict she will be number 1 in the Women list jo wileys doing on R2?

TatianaBis · 16/10/2021 14:34

DS2 decided to call farting 'rolling in the deep'. It never sounded the same after that.
