AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

@PurpleFlower1983

Something like this is much more realistic but would have likely cost even more.
This one is amazing but I wouldn't want to cut it.
MazzleDazzle · 15/10/2021 15:59

@groundhogdaycherry 88% have voted that the original poster is being unreasonable.

There’s nothing wrong with the cake at all. I really don’t know what the OP was expecting. I’ve paid more for worse!

People seriously underestimate the cost of ingredients and the amount of time required, not to mention the costs of running a business - rent, utilities, business rates, tax etc.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/10/2021 16:00

I dont like the tongue but otherwise its a cute dog that looks like your dog. I'm sure your child will love it.
Also rice crispie for head is fairly normal isn't it? We're you undersold in number of servings?

Igmum · 15/10/2021 16:00

I like it. There's hours of skilled work plus ingredients in that. I think £110 is reasonable (also in the North West)

Zilla1 · 15/10/2021 16:01

Excellent, especially for the price. Provided there is enough cake in the body then a rice krispy head wouldn't bother me at all.

Much better that it's cartoon-y too. Cutting into a photo-realistic pet cake would be astonishingly grim.

If the makers had posted then don't be heart broken, I and many think it's great.

TheAntiGardener · 15/10/2021 16:02

It’s not awful, but it’s not great either. I have no idea on price so not commenting on that, just not what I’d expect from a professional. That’s not to say I think it’s reasonable to expect the kind of cakes seen on tv for £110, but I think there are elements here that are just sloppy. The ears and tail are poor, I don’t think the stuck-on bits are particularly good either and someone with a bit more skill could have made it less generic without it necessarily being a lifelike sculpture! I’m not keen on the goofy look either (which is in no way like the actual dog). All in all, I’d be disappointed too.

A nine-year-old will most probably love it though, so I’d just chalk it up to experience.

isthismylifenow · 15/10/2021 16:02

@Notwhatiimagined

It’s not the price I’m querying, it’s more so if the dog looks like the photo and if you gave that photo to a cake maker would you expect that outcome?
They are bakers. Not sculpters. If you wanted it exact then one of those icing pictures on a flat cake would have been a better thing to request.

The cake you have is gorgeous.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/10/2021 16:02

@MaybeAMoaner

£110 !!!!!! Shock Oh my god. That’s a lot of money for something you eat
Absolutely shocking price! I would not pay that for a birthday cake for a 9 year old.
neveradullmoment99 · 15/10/2021 16:03

An obscene price to pay.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/10/2021 16:03

I think it’s lovely

SleepingStandingUp · 15/10/2021 16:03

@PinkWaferBiscuit

I think a lot of posters questioning the price are underestimating just how much a cake from a professional baker should cost.
I think a lot of people are questioning spending that much money in a kdis birthday cake, not that the cake and labour isn't worth £110
ufucoffee · 15/10/2021 16:03

You wanted a cake to look like a dog? Good God woman. Get a grip.

Walkingalot · 15/10/2021 16:03

You could buy a dog for that much - couldn't eat it though! Ridiculous price to pay for a generic dog cake. It's the same colour as your dog, that's it! I'd be very disappointed.

Jenhen89 · 15/10/2021 16:04

Nice cake but total rip off for £110.

isthismylifenow · 15/10/2021 16:04

You could buy a dog for that much

😂

Staffy1 · 15/10/2021 16:05

It’s nice, but I’ve seen better.

Whitney168 · 15/10/2021 16:05

@Notwhatiimagined

I think the dog above from pineapple is abit more what I was expecting.
I'd be expecting to pay £250 at the very least for the photo Pineapple posted (and expect a fair bit of that is still rice krispies too).

Did you look at the cakes the baker you chose make? If they posted bucketloads of pics like Pineapple's and didn't tell you you'd be getting something simpler, then fair enough to be a bit put-out.

If you just sent a pic of your dog and asked them to make a cake that looked like that, I think they did a decent enough job.

neveradullmoment99 · 15/10/2021 16:05

I think a lot of people are questioning spending that much money in a kdis birthday cake, not that the cake and labour isn't worth £110

This exactly.

isthismylifenow · 15/10/2021 16:07

OP go into Facebook and have a look at Pet Portraits by Hercule

Smile
crimsonlake · 15/10/2021 16:07

It would appear you were expecting something more realistic, but to be fair I expect for that level of detail you would have paid much more. I am sure your dd will be delighted and that is the important thing.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 15/10/2021 16:08

I think a lot of people are questioning spending that much money in a kdis birthday cake, not that the cake and labour isn't worth £110

I'll agree there are a few showing their shock at paying so much for a 9 year olds cake but there are also a heck of a lot of posters thinking the cake should cost a lot less just because they think cakes are made for pennies and the baker should not be paid for their time.

bluegrass1 · 15/10/2021 16:09

It's adorable! I'm not sure it's even possible to make a cake that looks like a real-life dog.. at least not unless you're paying £110

Decaffe · 15/10/2021 16:09

@Notwhatiimagined

I think I was expecting it to look more like the dog.

It was £110, north west area

I make cakes for birthdays/weddings as a hobby. That’s a great cake, I think they have done a great job. Using Rice Krispies for the more sculpted elements is standard… have you tried sculpting a sponge? It’s harder than it looks! £110 is a decent price for the time involved.
ShuddaBeenMe · 15/10/2021 16:10

No I wouldn't be happy with that

What's their previous work like? Rice crispies are normal but that looks pretty amateur to me.

ShuddaBeenMe · 15/10/2021 16:11

It also looks to me as though it's shit itself.
