AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

I thought the cake was for the dog, probably because of the lower case dd.

summercupcake · 15/10/2021 15:46

It's a cute cake! I love it.

YABU to pay £110 for a cake though that's bonkers!

SecretKeeper1 · 15/10/2021 15:46

Hopefully, a 7 quid Colin will do next year. Perhaps adopt a caterpillar before hand, so it’s relevant.

Garman · 15/10/2021 15:47

It's just a generic dog cake really isn't it, it's not like the actual dog other than the colour.

Rice Krispie heads are standard, cake is too heavy to stay up like that, but they should've explained that when ordering just to avoid this.

Movinghouseatlast · 15/10/2021 15:47

It's lovely! Cakes are very expensive and time consuming to make.

PurpleFlower1983 · 15/10/2021 15:48

Something like this is much more realistic but would have likely cost even more.

I made this cake I'm heartbroken
Don’t be. Most of us couldn’t have made such a cute cake Flowers
Scirocco · 15/10/2021 15:49

That looks adorable! And it is recognisable as being modelled after your family dog, so don't worry about that. I don't think I could bear to cut into it, let alone eat it, it's too cute.

Scirocco · 15/10/2021 15:50

Well, I think it's gorgeous. If I lived closer I'd be looking to become a customer!

WombatChocolate · 15/10/2021 15:51

I think you needed to discuss the project in more detail before committing, to be sure you would get what you hoped for. BUYER BEWARE.

However, I also think your expectations were probably unrealistic. £110 is a lot to fork out for a kids’ cake, but personalised cakes cost a lot in ingredients and Labour, even if you don’t like the end result.

Why worry, the boarders if kids will enjoy seeing it and saying it looks like your dog. It will be massacred and eaten. End of.

Scirocco · 15/10/2021 15:51

The above is for @groundhogdaycherry

EspressoDoubleShot · 15/10/2021 15:52

I came on expecting it to be a ghastly wonky cake,in fact it’s really well done

Bagelsandbrie · 15/10/2021 15:53

I think it’s cute, but £45 ish cute not £100 odd…!

Definitely a Colin the caterpillar job for next year…!

WombatChocolate · 15/10/2021 15:53

If I wanted to buy a cake for over £100 and had a dog like yours and received that cake, I’d be happy and so would my child.

As it is, my DH spends 3 hours each birthday making cakes which look a bit amateurish but which are a famiky tradition and we love. We have had cakes if our cats and of beloved toys. That cake is clearly YOUR dog. It IS a personalised cake. I think you got what you paid for.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/10/2021 15:54

Interesting that the one listed earlier is only £110 and much more professional looking: cakesburg.co.uk/collections/pet-cakes/products/cockapoo-dog-cake-white

Did she show you any of the work she's done before, OP, and if so were the pictures hers realistic in view of what you got?

HarebrightCedarmoon · 15/10/2021 15:54

It looks more like a hobby baker has made it. But I only like cakes that look like cakes anyway. Even seeing a cake shaped into a locomotive sliced up upset me a bit as a kid. I'd have been beside myself if someone sliced up something that looked like a pet!

takingmytimeonmyride · 15/10/2021 15:55

My DSD makes amazing cakes and it's quite usual to make bits out Rice Krispies.

I think the cake is very cute, I'm sure your DD will love it. I'd eat it, because cake!

No idea on prices as if my DSD doesn't make us one I buy them in the supermarket. Blush

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 15/10/2021 15:56

Christ these prices people are coming up with!

The ingredients would cost more than half that. The work would probably be 3 hours in total, maybe more. If the poor woman pays herself minimum wage, that's 30 quid at least just for her time. Then you need to take into account everything else like rent and utilities.

evilharpy · 15/10/2021 15:56

I'm always stunned by how cheap people expect cakes to be, and yet they seem happy to throw £50 at a balloon decoration.

I used to run a cake business. £25 might just cover the cost of ingredients/box/board. Then there's insurance, cost of electricity and all sorts of other expenses. Possibly premises to be paid for. The baker has to earn a living and there's several hours work in this. Carved cakes are fiddly. Bakers often work well into the night. It's a skilled job. Do you think they should be working for minimum wage or even less?

I would have charged about the same for this cake (although I'd have done it in sugarpaste rather than buttercream) and that was a few years ago. I had a minimum order value of £50 and that wouldn't have got you anything more than a very basic round cake with a happy birthday message.

QuestionEverythingBaby · 15/10/2021 15:56

I wouldn't be too happy with that either. The features are too cartoony.
It looks like a dog, just not your dog.

TokyoSushi · 15/10/2021 15:56

If I was 9, I'd love it!

GoldChick · 15/10/2021 15:57

Don't be. It's lovely.
friendlycat · 15/10/2021 15:57

I think it’s a good cake and the price is fair. That’s a lot of work.
6 bog standard cupcakes cost £25. Some people are unrealistic with their perceived pricing of bespoke cakes.

ancientgran · 15/10/2021 15:58

I think it is really cute. The other one someone posted looks a bit scary to me.

justustwoandmoo · 15/10/2021 15:59

I thought it looked lovely until you said it cost £110! I actually would expect a sculpture for that!!!
