ok where i live is a cul de sac, but all the roads that lead to mine have cars parked half on the pavements! drives me nuts! there is no need for it at all, plenty of room if the cars all parked on one side of the roads but no, couldnt possibly do that and walk an extra 10 ft to the front gates, in the mean time kids are trying to play out but end up having to play in the road because they cant ride on their bikes/scooters etc on the pavements, nevermind when you try to walk pushing a pram you have to walk in the road as there is no room to get past these inconsiderate gits!

We can only park on one side of the street, whole town pretty much is terraces so there's no option of parking on nearby streets (though there are some that are wider that you'll get the odd space)

There is one culprit who parks a big van fully on the pavement as he comes and goes at odd hours when theres no space on the 'parking side' of the street.

I'm not sure from this thread though whether I should be getting angry or saluting him; he's an on call firefighter who's required to have his vehicle near as he has to get to the station within 3minutes when he's on duty. He drives the fire engine. I don't think I'd want him to give up his job because he doesn't have a drive.

In the vast majority of cases though people parking on the pavement is shitty, though IF the pavement is wide enough that a car can be part on while still allowing space for a mobility scooter/motorised wheelchair then I think it's a necessary evil. I used to work as community support worker with adults with disabilities and there were days we literally had to stay inside because their route to the local bank/shops was blocked.

I once told off a guy with a van who just plopped it In front of our house for 2 days blocking the pavement. It takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone. He then took to parking on the other side (i don't know who he was staying with) which meant he had to be half in a road and I am pretty confident he was the reason bin men hit our mirror...
Luckily he hasn't appeared since. Vans are a different game. There i 5-6 wide pavement around the corner, he could have park there. Stupid

@Wazzzzzzzup presume you skipped the rest of my post, our van driver is also the driver of the local fire engine. Its annoying where he parks but if he didn't, he would have to give his job and firefighters are quite useful!

@julieca

Our council tells people to partially park on pavements as otherwise, bin lorries and emergency services can not get through.
Yep, it's the same here and I suspect it's similar in many areas that are just rows of terraced houses.

There is nowhere else to park. Most houses don't have garages or drives or off-road parking. Where are all these areas with unlimited, free and easy-to-access off-road parking, anyway?

Wazzzzzzzup · 15/10/2021 16:50

No, I didn't skip. I just went on tangent about our van guy. 🙈
I am still in a hump about lost mirror

I live on a road where all the houses have driveways and interestingly people do manage not to park on the pavements, though some school run parents feel the need to park on the grass verges. But we'll let that slide.

But it is really annoying when you are walking on a narrow path next to a busy road (where all the houses also have driveways) and people still feel the need to park on the pavement. They still cause an obstruction for cars so I can't understand why they do it. And it is really dangerous for pedestrians forced out into the road.

The law needs clarifying and quickly in my view.

Againstmachine · 15/10/2021 17:28

What also a lot of pavement parkers don't realise is pavements are designed for the weight of people on it not the weight of cars parking or driven along it.

Whilst it isnt illegal to park on the pavement it is to drive along it unless accessing a entrance/driveway. And unless you have hovered there you have driven on it.

I have drivers who are parking on pavement beep at me as apparently I'm in the way when I'm walking slowly where they want to park or stood waiting.

Wazzzzzzzup · 15/10/2021 17:29

I always hope that if they ever outlaw it where i live, the council would offer to sell 50cm-1 tile of the pavement to the houses. That would provide drives AND still like 2m of pavement.

Then councils should stop telling people to park on the pavements!

BoredZelda · 15/10/2021 21:19

Not to mention wheelchair users.

Which is why bikes and scooters shouldn’t be on the pavement either.

GettingLardy · 16/10/2021 14:27

The pavements by me are hazardous, trying to negotiate parked cars, electric scooters and cyclists - the majority of whom seem to be Just Eat couriers. Yesterday, I was walking on the tiny sliver of pavement left (thanks to a parked van) and a bloke on a bike tried to overtake me. The twat was ringing his bell and shouting "Coming through!" I had nowhere to move to so he just had to slow down.
