ok where i live is a cul de sac, but all the roads that lead to mine have cars parked half on the pavements! drives me nuts! there is no need for it at all, plenty of room if the cars all parked on one side of the roads but no, couldnt possibly do that and walk an extra 10 ft to the front gates, in the mean time kids are trying to play out but end up having to play in the road because they cant ride on their bikes/scooters etc on the pavements, nevermind when you try to walk pushing a pram you have to walk in the road as there is no room to get past these inconsiderate gits!

Well I don't live in London or England and even on my driving lessons a few years ago we were told its okay as long as you don't block off the road. But okay lol

eastegg · 15/10/2021 09:45

the common decency of allowing space for other drivers
!!!!
But not the common decency of considering wheelchair users or blind people who can’t safely get past. This poster says they leave enough room, but the offenders I see don’t.

I think this is what riles me the most about the pavement parking I see all the time (and I’m in London so it’s illegal). It screams out ‘I’ve taken the time to consider leaving room for other cars but I don’t give a toss about pedestrians’. And don’t tell me they’re thinking about emergency vehicles because they’re not. If they were that public spirited they wouldn’t be blocking the pavement.

AnkleDeep · 15/10/2021 09:50

There's been a bit of a rebellion in an estate near here. Wheelchair and pram pushers bang on the doors to make people move their cars.

PCSOs have been booking cars that block the pavement such that wheelchairs and prams can't get past.

And in the dead of night people push past the cars, even if it causes scratches. The owners are furious but are getting very little sympathy.

julieca · 15/10/2021 09:51

The people saying just park in the next street has obviously never lived in an area with lots of terraced housing.
And it isn't even multiple cars. One car per household is too much if you can only park on one side of the street. Our car used to take up the space on our road for one house. And even parking partly on the pavement, we sometimes had to park on another street.
Any visitor who did not park partly on the pavement blocked the road. And yes a few times bin lorries or vans had to reverse a long way because this happened.
It is shit. But it is because these streets were not built for cars.

@3scape

A friend has to use a mobility scooter to get around. He used to be very conscientious going back, around etc to avoid damaging cars. Now he's reached a can't give a fuck stage. Parking on a pavement is the reserve of cunts and wankers.
My dad was the same. He scratched quite a few as I recall. When I used to take my mom out in her wheelchair, rather than risking life and limb by pushing her into the road, we'd happily scrape past pavement parked cars.
Sugarplumfairy65 · 15/10/2021 10:00

@SilverBirchWithout

It is annoying when cars (unnecessarily) park on pavements so people cannot get by easily. Neither should children be riding their bikes on the pavements. In fact if the local kids were milling about outside my house I’d probably park my car on the pavement to stop them. Maybe parents should take them somewhere else to learn to ride, or let them play in the garden instead. I certainly wouldn’t let me kids disturb the neighbours in my close like that.
How would wheelchair users and blind people get passed if you parked on the pavement to stop local kids milling around ?

@MazIsWin22

So it's not ok to block drivers but it's fine to block pedestrians. Anyway the rules overseas may well be different if they have much wider pavements. For example, I can think of roads in Germany which have very wide pavements with cars being parked at an angle on half the path (and indeed in the UK). That is very different to blocking the entire path with your van and forcing people out onto a busy road.

As for not wanting to block drivers. the silly thing is that people usually still do. If I am driving along, I still have to wait behind their car until the oncoming traffic has gone by. So they may as well just park in the road and not inconvenience pedestrians as well, as they're not making it any easier for drivers anyway.

As for the law, it's illegal to drive onto a pavement. By definition if you park on a pavement you must have driven onto it! So the police could do something, but they choose not to.

When I walk past an [insert expletive of choice] on the pavement I usually accidentally on purpose whack into their wing mirror. Sadly it doesn't set off alarms anymore.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 15/10/2021 10:07

If a car that is parked in a pavement is causing and obstruction, its a road traffic offence. A group of disabled people in my area report every car that is doing this to the police with photographic evidence. They are sick to death of not being able to get out and about in their wheelchairs because every route they try to take is blocked. They've been given a dedicated phone number to ring and the police are taking action. One poor woman couldn't get to a hospital appointment last week because every route she tried to take to the bus stop was blocked by cars on pavements

I've seen it myself where people park like absolute tossers on the pavements or just in general but I've also seen people like myself who park leaving space on pavement aswell as on the road and I have to say I see more of the latter than I do anything else. It is frustrating but its not something to boil your blood over all the time, not exactly healthy to be so upset about it 24/7!

I live on a street with mostly 4-in-a-block housing. Some houses too but not as many. Its always busy with cars but not so busy that there isnt enough space for everyone park, to walk past or drive past comfortably. We all park on the pavement here because if we didn't the road would be blocked off and there isn't any "parking" nearby at all. Maybe I misunderstood the OP by commenting - I don't live in England/London either so can't tell you heads nor tails of it.

MazIsWin22 · 15/10/2021 10:15

Lockdownmadness (something)

What you talking about? Did you read my previous posts haha. If you had you'd see I never block off pedestrians - the pavement outside my front door is massive so there is ALWAYS plenty of room. I Never park fully on pavement, its less than half of the car gets parked on it. I'm in Scotland and it's not illegal but thanks for the assumption and random explanation. Also if you hit my car I'd happily give you a pat on the back of good will, I hate the thing but it gets me from a to b. Im not as though I'm gonna cry over it haha

julieca · 15/10/2021 10:19

And I have always had old cars. I don't care if you scratch it.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/10/2021 10:35

Livpool · 15/10/2021 11:12

YANBU OP - I always see this and to annoys me. Where are wheelchair users supposed to go?!

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 15/10/2021 11:24

Thank you @Wazzzzzzzup!

Decency restored!

megletthesecond · 15/10/2021 11:28

You need to get some stickers from the nice people at @yplac on twitter.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 15/10/2021 11:44

It was not until I had a pram to push (many years ago) that I had even the slightest insight or idea what wheelchair users face. At least you can bump a buggy down a pavement. I think that people who park over kerb drops should be fined.

I agree
icedcoffees · 15/10/2021 14:09

@Lockheart

If they weren't allowed to do that, they'd have nowhere to park.

So what? Cars are optional private possessions. A desire to own one doesn't mean you get to disregard laws / basic social decency because you don't have somewhere to park it.

If you want a car, make sure you have space to store it safely and appropriately, whether that's on a road or on private land.

lol, how do you propose people get to work then? Many of us live in areas with no public transport whatsoever.
Lockheart · 15/10/2021 14:22

lol, how do you propose people get to work then? Many of us live in areas with no public transport whatsoever.

There are many options. Cycle, walk. Move to somewhere with parking (on or off street). Move closer to work. Move somewhere with public transport. Lobby your MP for better public transport.

You still can't store your personal possessions on the pavement.

Cars already take up enough space on our streets (they are hugely space inefficient considering that the average car is used for less than one hour a day and most journeys are under 5 miles), they shouldn't be taking up public space off-road too.

Wazzzzzzzup · 15/10/2021 14:24

Lol at Looby an MP for better public transport😂

And those things aren't optional for the vast majority of people.

Cycling and walking to work isn't possible when you have a car full of equipment to carry with you. Moving is expensive. My MP got rid of our local public transport - what makes you think they'd bring it back? lol.

Anyway, luckily it's not up to you to decide how other people park. Our council TELLS us to park on the pavement :)

If there are signs telling you to do so it's not illegal. But I wonder what the council tells those who use wheelchairs, those who are blind or partially sighted, those who use mobility scooters, or parents with prams.

They don't need to tell the anything - there's plenty of room for those people to use the pavements even with cars parked on them.

julieca · 15/10/2021 15:29

Our council tells people to partially park on pavements as otherwise, bin lorries and emergency services can not get through.
