ok where i live is a cul de sac, but all the roads that lead to mine have cars parked half on the pavements! drives me nuts! there is no need for it at all, plenty of room if the cars all parked on one side of the roads but no, couldnt possibly do that and walk an extra 10 ft to the front gates, in the mean time kids are trying to play out but end up having to play in the road because they cant ride on their bikes/scooters etc on the pavements, nevermind when you try to walk pushing a pram you have to walk in the road as there is no room to get past these inconsiderate gits!

Well, sometimes being on the other side of the road is challenging especially if you have young children/multiple children/babies/disabled adults, especially if the road is busy. as opposed to having to try and get your wheelchair or pushchair down onto the road and back up again into the flow of traffic which is a total doddle.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/10/2021 07:44

But I always make sure to leave plenty room for people to get past comfortably. then you're not part of the problem are you so it isn't aimed at you.

PatchworkElmer · 15/10/2021 07:48

People were doing it around here, and there was a form on the council website to report a concern. It has definitely helped.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 15/10/2021 07:54

Around here there are roads where cars on one side have to park fully on the pavement and the cars on the other side park half on the pavement for cars to get by. Our pavements are huge though so plenty of space for wheelchairs still. Where else can people put their cars?

icedcoffees · 15/10/2021 07:59

These threads always kick off Grin

On my road, one half of the street parks normally, the other half with their wheels on the pavement to allow emergency services and bin lorries to get through.

If they weren't allowed to do that, they'd have nowhere to park. The houses don't have have drives or garages or any kind of off-road parking to use, and all the surrounding streets in the town are exactly the same, so you can't just park a street away and walk.

Someone told me once I should park in the nearest place with free fully on-road parking - I did explain that that was seven miles away in the next town over but apparently I should park there and walk home HmmGrin

SpiceRat · 15/10/2021 08:04

You MUST NOT park partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it.
The wording is advisory only outside of London. Should is advisory, and while I agree people shouldn’t be blocking pavements for pushchairs and wheelchairs (not kids riding bikes) there’s little to be done about it and frothing over it will just raise your blood pressure.

Then when you say that you probably can't do that, they start suggesting shuttle buses, taxis, cycling etc. Fabulous ideas
MrzClaus · 15/10/2021 08:13

There's an idiot near us who not only parks over the pavement (sometimes leaving no room) but also about 2 m from a junction. He's a knob! He's now fitted a camera by his front porch directly facing the car, as he was complaining on the estate Facebook group that someone had walked past and knocked his wing mirror in (and he didn't notice until he was on the motorway which is a 5 minute drive away so he's clearly a terrible driver too) and moaned that people should walk out into the road to avoid his car 😂 it's mind blowing!! We've got another car on the estate who won't use her drive but parks on the pavement outside her house, on a bend on the main road into the estate. She's a knob too! It is rather crazy these people are so selfish!

You can always report the issue to the police as it may not be a problem parking there but the obstruction of the footpath may be.
Wazzzzzzzup · 15/10/2021 08:17

Our pavements are actually together wider than the road. Bit odd, but allows for parking and wheelchairs to pass.

You kid should learn in a park or empty carpark. Yabu

insancerre · 15/10/2021 08:22

I live in a cul de sac and can’t even walk on the pavement when I leave my house because my neighbour has blocked the entire pavement outside their house with
Abandoned car
Pile of rubbish
Overhanging bushes
Car parked on pavement being charged by an electric wire that stretches across the pavement from the house to the car
I have to walk in the road and risk being killed by my other neighbours teenage son on his e scooter

Or perhaps the cars should be parked in the car park, leaving the pavement free for people to actually use? Confused

YANBU, OP. Pavements are for people, not cars.

Wazzzzzzzup · 15/10/2021 08:24

Lol yeah. Asda will happily take the cars from the estate.
There is enough free pavement for people to use...

ablutiions · 15/10/2021 08:28

Unless pavement parking markings are there it is illegal to park on the pavement. Call the local council parking enforcement people. They will deal with it.

My DH has them on speed dial as he goes everywhere with a double buggy Grin and people are cunty in their parking behaviour -especially the huge 4x4 s who, apparently not only own the road, but the pavement as well.

eastegg · 15/10/2021 08:32

@julieca

Do you have to pay for the car park?
Astonishing that you are trying to justify the appalling parking in the post above with this question.
MajorCarolDanvers · 15/10/2021 08:33

From 2023 it will be illegal to park on pavements in Scotland thanks to new legislation.

It should have come into force this year but has been delayed by the pandemic.

Lockheart · 15/10/2021 08:41

If they weren't allowed to do that, they'd have nowhere to park.

So what? Cars are optional private possessions. A desire to own one doesn't mean you get to disregard laws / basic social decency because you don't have somewhere to park it.

If you want a car, make sure you have space to store it safely and appropriately, whether that's on a road or on private land.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 15/10/2021 08:41

My pet hate OP - when I am Queen pavement parking will be banned.

I saw a good picture yesterday of a car partly parked on a narrow pavement, with a cable across to the house to charge, and then a bin strategically placed to stop anyone walkjng past on the pavement (admittedly the bin could have been just out for collection). Everyone getting het up about the cable - and yes, people could trip over it, but it was the casual blocking of the pavement that annoyed me.

Also workmen who put up signs blocking the pavement but don't actually have permission to block it.

Pedestrians just don't matter.

Oh but but but, if you own an SUV you are allowed to pollute the atmosphere, take up too much room on the roads and car parks and obviously that means you can block pavements too.

Though to be fair, the biggest offenders around my area are van drivers. If they are only there for a few seconds while they deliver something, that's not so bad. But some decide to park there all day while working in a house. Not sure what's wrong with their customer's driveway or the road outside Angry

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/10/2021 09:07

We all bump up on the pavement in my road as it's too narrow to park otherwise. However, the path is very wide and you can actually park all 4 wheels on the pavement and still get past. And before anyone shouts at me for parking like that I did it as I was told to by the police!

I think in our case it would be a good idea for the council to mark bays partly on the pavement but I won't be suggesting it yet as I don't want to give them an excuse to raise the council tax any more!

Wazzzzzzzup · 15/10/2021 09:11

Same here @PinkSparklyPussyCat. The pavement easily fits one and half winde sedan (which in our case is bloody wider than quite a few of the "suv"). Parking fully on on one side allows other side to park half off. So one sode is absolutely fine for wheelchair and single buggy, other has extra space for doubles.
I agree though that when cars take whole pavement it's shit

I'm still just in shock at the OP's comment of "no point in a diagram" Shock

KevinTheKoala · 15/10/2021 09:19

It is an absolute nightmare for wheelchair users/those using mobility scooters/people with prams/other mobility aids. The amount of people who expect you to take a wheelchair onto a busy road where you can't see the oncoming traffic clearly because the cars parked on the pavement are in the way is ridiculous. There was a post on a local community page not long ago where someone was complaining about a wheelchair user causing the scratch on his car that he had parked on the pavement because: 'idiots can't figure out how to go in the road'......... Pedestrians are not supposed to go in the road! That's what pavements are for Angry

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 15/10/2021 09:27

The biggest problem is house were there before everyone had a car so those roads arent designed to have the amount of traffic it does.
Why they deliberately make 0 drives and 0 parking in new estates drives me batty.
