to ask how best to report someone for no MOT?

I have some unpleasant neighbours in my street - not immediately next door but close proximity. They tick most of the poor neighbour boxes - loud, large parties (earlier this year they had about 50-60 mid teens round who were all drinking, dropping bottles and cans all over the street etc), their garden is full of rubbish, broken furniture etc, they let their dogs roam the streets - and kids for that matter, they do some small time drug dealing etc. You get the idea.

They have a car which is often illegally parked, driven by one of the elder kids who is under 17, doesn't look or sound particularly roadworthy - out of interest I looked it up today as I saw it backfiring down the street (driven by one of the adults) - and the MOT ran out in mid August.

On the gov.uk website it said to report to our local police (Met) via 101, I tried calling but gave up after about 10 mins on hold; looked online but the form seems to require me to give name and address which I'm not keen on in case there's any way they find out it was me - they're the sort of people to key your car or worse. Is there a way to report without this? - do I just need to go on hold to 101? The online form also seemed more geared to reporting a 'someone's broken into my house' crime rather than this kind of thing?

If anyone has reported for this it would be most helpful, thanks

10 minutes with 101 is nothing. Takes ages to go through. Keep trying

Burgerqueenbee · 11/10/2021 10:51

Pretty sure last time I called 101 they asked for my name and address, although this was about 5 years ago so perhaps they have stopped.

mikedyson · 11/10/2021 11:04

Good luck OP.
I had to get my MP involved in order to get anything done about the scrote who lives in our road.
He was driving car with no tax and MOT. We wouldn't even have noticed him except he kept parking up outside our houses to smoke weed, then drive on.
The Police might as well have told me to fuck off - I gave up on 101 but I was able to report online. I got no response but when I chased it up they tried to put me off by saying I'd have to give evidence (I said fine which obviously disappointed them) then they said they wouldn't do anything unless a Police officer saw the car being driven.
At this point I wrote to my MP and a senior copper got involved - he was very dismissive though. The kid was never done for anything, but the cops did make him get an MOT and tax at least. The MOT was an initial failure for dangerous brakes.
I have given up on the Police - they always seem to look for ways they can avoid acting against obvious scrotes and treat law-abiding people as mugs and idiots..

hellywelly3 · 11/10/2021 11:24

I’ve been reporting someone driving banned for drug driving but the police won’t do anything unless they actually see them driving. It’s an absolute joke.

mikedyson · 11/10/2021 11:27

It is a joke - the Police said they would "keep an eye out" for him. They sent a Police car twice - one at about 11am and the other time at 10am - times when there was never any chance of him even being awake.

The amount of dangerous driving and illegal vehicles I see every day tells me the Police have given up enforcing all but the very most serious traffic laws.

TheQueef · 11/10/2021 11:28

As others have said they won't do anything unless they are caught in the act and won't have resources to sit and watch out.
As frustrating as it is it may be best (best for you) to try and forget it.

This is a poor excuse from the Police - I assume they don't apply the same rule to burglaries? Or assaults? Oh, hang on, maybe they do.

Yeah, no MOT is fine - I won't bother with getting one either then.
MrsTulipTattsyrup · 11/10/2021 11:31

Can you report it anonymously to Crimestoppers? They might not be too interested in the lack of MOT, but an unlicensed, underage driver might get their attention.

jimmyhill · 11/10/2021 11:34

Is it taxed and insured? They might be more interested if either of those are missing.

Unless the car is actually dangerous to drive then no MoT is hardly crime of the century. If they get pulled over, they'll get fined. Otherwise, honestly, there probably are better things for the police to be doing than acting on your grudges.

thereisonlyoneofme · 11/10/2021 11:35

Report it on DVLA site. I did this when our neighbors had no MOT and no tax more importantly no insurance. Took a while but car was towed eventually.

jimmyhill · 11/10/2021 11:35

And before anyone else attempts this bit of nonsense, no, lacking an MoT does not invalidate insurance

TheQueef · 11/10/2021 11:37

That's not what I said @mikedyson do you struggle with comprehension?

hellywelly3 · 11/10/2021 11:39

@mikedyson I honestly think that is what they do. I even said could you not just go round and have a word with them that you’ve had reports about them driving, it might just scare them a little. But they couldn’t even do that. I know a few people have reported it but it’s still not enough. It’s ridiculous.

mikedyson · 11/10/2021 11:40

You said forget it.

It doesn't - but the kid I reported for no MOT turned out to be driving with dangerous brakes too which would probably not have thrilled his insurers (if he had insurance).
TheQueef · 11/10/2021 11:42

See the bit in brackets, that was the clarification that I was saying in the OPs interest not general interest.

mikedyson · 11/10/2021 11:46

Under what circumstances would you offer different advice?
TheQueef · 11/10/2021 11:51

If there were some way of the OP getting action and I knew how i would mention that mike but in my experience (seems yours is the same) reporting no MOT doesn't result in police interest.

And I'm still not saying that that is fine or OK.

Can't believe this attitude.
CareerConcerns1999 · 11/10/2021 11:52

Keeping a taxed car with no MOT on the street is not a crime. Driving without an MOT is the offence. Unless they are caught whilst driving, no crime has taken place.

You are wrong - lots of crimes take place without a person being caught. The Police don't need to be present at each and every crime for it to have occurred.

Ugh I hate neighbours like you. Times I like these I'm glad I have off road parking.

Expired in August. So possible that they overlooked this given it's 40 days overdue. Not great and they will get a fine anyway when they do eventually renew it, but hate meddling & malicious neighbours like you!

daffodils123 · 11/10/2021 12:02

I get reporting underage driver (though if you don't know your neighbours I suspect that this is your guess rather than knowing how old they are) or reporting dangerous driving, but this sounds ridiculous.

People should mind their business in my opinion.

How do you know they don't have insurance?

Horrible society we live in when meddling people are so quick to report others about things that don't concern them. Hmm

Confiscatedpopit · 11/10/2021 12:03

I think you need to really be honest with yourself about your motives for this.

If they were the best neighbours in the world then would you report the MOT? Would you have even looked it up?

If the issue is that you are genuinely just concerned about an unroadworthy car on the road then go ahead. If it’s just to seek revenge then I wouldn’t waste my time. It’ll get flagged up in time- 2 months isn’t an enormous amount of time. I’d either speak to them about their anti-social shite or if that isn’t an option then I’d either complain in the correct way or move.
