to ask how best to report someone for no MOT?

I have some unpleasant neighbours in my street - not immediately next door but close proximity. They tick most of the poor neighbour boxes - loud, large parties (earlier this year they had about 50-60 mid teens round who were all drinking, dropping bottles and cans all over the street etc), their garden is full of rubbish, broken furniture etc, they let their dogs roam the streets - and kids for that matter, they do some small time drug dealing etc. You get the idea.

They have a car which is often illegally parked, driven by one of the elder kids who is under 17, doesn't look or sound particularly roadworthy - out of interest I looked it up today as I saw it backfiring down the street (driven by one of the adults) - and the MOT ran out in mid August.

On the gov.uk website it said to report to our local police (Met) via 101, I tried calling but gave up after about 10 mins on hold; looked online but the form seems to require me to give name and address which I'm not keen on in case there's any way they find out it was me - they're the sort of people to key your car or worse. Is there a way to report without this? - do I just need to go on hold to 101? The online form also seemed more geared to reporting a 'someone's broken into my house' crime rather than this kind of thing?

If anyone has reported for this it would be most helpful, thanks

Part of the responsibility of having a car is making sure it's insured, taxed and MOTd. If it wasn't taxed DVLA would probably have clamped it by now.

The car is used daily. A car that's being driven needs a MOT.

However I take the point made by PPs that even if I report it nothing will happen - much like nothing happens about any of their other anti social behaviour. I'll just have to hope it gets stopped at some point by the police although given the general state of the car I'm surprised it hasn't been already.

@daffodils123 I never said they don't have insurance. I have no idea either way. The teenager (who is in year 10/11, so unless held back a year or two is definitely not 17) will not be insured of course.

@Confiscatedpopit I can't imagine getting on well with a neighbour who drove round in an apparently unroadworthy car but I'll concede that but for their other anti social behaviour and the under age driving I probably wouldn't have checked.

Unfortunately there is nowhere I can complain about the general nuisance they cause, they rent their home and the HA will only look into complaints if a) you give your name and address and b) it's already been reported to the police - except the police aren't interested in it.

@MOTexpired you can also check online if it's taxed/insured.

DVLA care far more about untaxed vehicles than the police do about non-road worthy ones that they don't catch in the act.

The last time I reported a non-taxed car it was clamped within a week. DVLA will also fine if the car isn't continuously insured if not SORN. If they've declared the car as SORN and DVLA do a drive by that'll trigger the penalties. Basically DVLA are your best bet if they've failed to do the insurance/tax thing too.

Wegobshite · 11/10/2021 12:35

If you have a local PCSO tell them
We had a neighbour that had no Insurance tax or mot and the PSCO got the car removed within a few weeks
You could report it to the council - tell them it’s leaking petrol 😂
They put a notice on it and if it’s still there in 15 days it will get removed on the 15th day where I live

FredaFox · 11/10/2021 12:46

Can't you report it online? My force has a chat thing you can report things too. You could create an email just for this purpose if that worried about giving details

mikedyson · 11/10/2021 14:32

@daffodils123

I get reporting underage driver (though if you don't know your neighbours I suspect that this is your guess rather than knowing how old they are) or reporting dangerous driving, but this sounds ridiculous.

People should mind their business in my opinion.

How do you know they don't have insurance?

Horrible society we live in when meddling people are so quick to report others about things that don't concern them. Hmm

Horrible society we live in where people can get away with anti-social behaviour and law breaking and all some people can do is say "don't grass" - pathetic.
mikedyson · 11/10/2021 14:34

Ugh I hate neighbours like you. Times I like these I'm glad I have off road parking.

Expired in August. So possible that they overlooked this given it's 40 days overdue. Not great and they will get a fine anyway when they do eventually renew it, but hate meddling & malicious neighbours like you!

I hate people who call it meddling when people are blatantly breaking the law and someone mentions it to the Police.

They won't get an automatic fine when (if) they get a new MOT - you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Bonheurdupasse · 11/10/2021 16:09

Give a different name and address :)

simitra · 11/10/2021 16:11

I dont like snitches either. However when you have shitpigs living alongside you its sometimes the only way to get back and cause them a bit of inconvenience in return.

If you have to give your name & address is there an empty house nearby whose address you could use? I did that when objecting to a planning application.

If its one of those sites where they insist upon sending you an email for you to acknowledge it just set up a temporary one on googlemail or hotmail etc.

blubberyboo · 11/10/2021 16:59

Are you in Northern Ireland? Because here everyone’s MOT is out of date as the DVTA test centres are struggling to clear covid backlog, and the police have said they will waive drivers as long as they have a future date booked

Bootikin · 11/10/2021 17:09

You can report it online but the police will do nothing. The only way people get caught without an MOT is if they go through an automatic number plate registering camera and the police run a check. Really sympathise.

Shade17 · 11/10/2021 17:30

you can also check online if it's taxed/insured.

Well, you can check if it’s taxed.

Cheeserton · 11/10/2021 17:34

I'd say the best way to report someone for no MOT, unless they just ran your child over, is to mind your own business.

jimmyhill · 11/10/2021 18:41

@Shade17

Well, you can check if it’s taxed.

You can also check if it's insured, Google AskMID.
FatFredsFriedEgg · 11/10/2021 19:06

You can also check if it's insured, Google AskMID.

Well you can, in the same way as you can drive without tax or insurance yourself - you can still physically do it even though it's illegal.

The askMID website makes it clear that it's an offence under the Data Protection Act to access the information for a vehicle unless It is either registered/ owned/ insured by me or my employer; I am permitted to drive it; I am an Insurance Broker or agent and acting on behalf of my client.

Why?
Blueeyedgirl21 · 11/10/2021 19:14

The police in general are as much use as ashtray on a motorbike. I wouldn’t even ring them if I was being chased by an axe wielding nutter. People will start taking things into their own hands soon. Can’t say I blame them

Confiscatedpopit · 11/10/2021 19:14

Just use askmid, I do it all the time 😂no one has jumped out of the laptop to arrest me just yet 😂🤣🤣

Shade17 · 11/10/2021 19:15

You can also check if it's insured, Google AskMID.

I’m fully aware how AskMID works, certainly more than you are.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 11/10/2021 19:37

So if it’s so ok to drive without an MOT, why do we need to have them done? Is it some sort of conspiracy set up by Car mechanics everywhere to scam us out of money? If you or your family were involved in a crash because one of these un roadworthy cars couldn’t brake/turn etc properly, would you say ‘oh well not my business’?

jimmyhill · 11/10/2021 19:42

Oh bless your heart

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 11/10/2021 20:11

You are just looking for a way to get some "revenge" on neighbours you don't like.
Just because a car has no valid M.O.T. doesn't mean it is automatically "unroadworthy".
If a car is not insured - and it doesn't hit your car / family member is it your concern?
Maybe if you kept your nosy neighbour nose out of everyones business, then you might just find some peace on your life.

NotMyCat · 11/10/2021 20:17

I'm amazed how many people drive without one. And so many of those will say "how much Grace do you get on an MOT? It's ok if it's booked in right?" And I'm "noooooo!!!" I've seen cars that have been driving for 18 months without one
MalteseBubs · 11/10/2021 20:24

They'll be more interested if it's not taxed or insured and you can't do either of these things without a valid MOT so just pray it fails it's MOT or he gets fined fir lack of the former

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 11/10/2021 21:13

OP: you wrote in a previous post that the neighbours are in rented property belonging to the HA. The HA won't accept anonymous complaints....
So, you want to report but don't want anyone to know that it was YOU who reported........
You are the worst kind of curtain twitching, sniffling, moaining neighbor that there is or will you next resort to slinking out in the middle of the night in a balaclava and slashing the tires on the un- M.O.T.'d car?
