To think gluten free prescriptions should come back?

I think I probably am but with all the panic buying people are buying gluten free stuff. I’m diagnosed coeliac and it’s hard enough finding food that isn’t ridiculously expensive never mind when you go to the single shelf in the co op to see it empty. Maybe I’m just hungry?!

Oh it must be tricky. Maybe they need to ration it again :( can you eat potatos and rice and beans? They are usually filling and there always seem to be some in stock. I mean obviously that's dull to eat all the time .

Of all the things I want the NHS to prioritise, issuing and processing and dispensing prescriptions for products that can be purchased “off the shelf”/entirely lived without are not even close to the top of my list.

Your problem could probably be sorted by going to a bigger supermarket, making a special order with your supermarket or if it really is a major issue for lots of people, supermarkets rationing such products to only those with medical need. It really doesn’t need to trouble the NHS.

BlanketPiggy · 09/10/2021 21:34

I imagine if the supermarkets don't have it then there isn't enough in the supply chain? And the NHS would just have to pay for it or you'd pay a stupidly high prescription charge for a loaf of bread?

multiplemum3 · 09/10/2021 21:35

I know how you feel, when everyone was panic buying I couldn't buy anything gluten free for my coeliac daughter. We've never had it on prescription but it was scary last time this happened.

Mymapuddlington · 09/10/2021 21:36

I know @621CustardCream438 purely selfish dreaming of toast at the moment.
Unfortunately gluten free staples aren’t great in any supermarket. I’ll survive I just really want some toast Grin

You have to ask the question where does it stop. My kids are allergic to dairy, one is also allergic to soya and needs to have one specific product to get enough iodine (although I believe one other new milk has come on the market). She is too young to take calcium supplements. To have a balanced diet she has to have this milk or the other new one which we haven’t tried yet) Should her alternative milk also be on prescription?

MrzClaus · 09/10/2021 21:37

I think the cost is prohibitive for the NHS to prescribe it, it's also fairly bulky and awkward!

Have you tried online? I have always been able to get bits in my locals (Waitrose and booths) or online via Tesco / Ocado. Apologies if this is teaching my grandma to suck eggs advice!

Mymapuddlington · 09/10/2021 21:39

I just know it used to be on prescription and stopped a few years ago, at least where I am.
I blame pregnancy, I’m vegetarian and would have killed for a chicken Kiev a few weeks ago and now I want toast, slathered in butter 🤤

Would you be able to invest in a bread maker, and make your own bread with gluten free flour? We make all our bread at home and it’s so easy - half a minute to weigh out the ingredients and then it does all the work for you. I feel awful that you can’t have toast whenever you fancy some.

This might at least give you one thing you could always rely on having available. Tesco sells Doves Farm gluten free beard flour, for instance, and easy packet yeast is cheap.

BlanketPiggy · 09/10/2021 21:43

Oh no absolute nightmare craving for you if you can't have bread!

Cabinfever10 · 09/10/2021 21:44

Sorry but yabu. There is no need for gluten free food just buy fresh food (fruit, veg ,meat and rice) and if you want biscuits etc make your own with rice or corn flour and gum Arabic. Yes some of it takes longer to prepare but its a lot cheaper and healthier. I have done this for years.
Honestly gluten free food should never have been on prescription

Wazzzzzzzup · 09/10/2021 21:44

I said it not so long ago that I hope the thundercunts leave the glutenfree secrion alone, not like last time...
I like Asda's pasta if you have nearby or can order. Not keen on any bread.

Mymapuddlington · 09/10/2021 21:46

I used to bake bread but the whole process of kneading to make gluten isn’t applicable now and my attempts have turned out like cardboard coated in dust. A machine would know what it’s doing presumably! Off to research bread makers, thanks!

I’ve never had an issue getting GF bread / rolls in our local Tesco , lots of different brands as well , perhaps you need to shop somewhere different OP .

Porcupineintherough · 09/10/2021 21:49

Tbh I think YABU. You dont need to buy gf replacement products, there's lots of naturally gf foods we (Im coeliac too) can eat. If bread is your thing though, def consider a bread maker. Quite a few have gf setttings.

Mymapuddlington · 09/10/2021 21:49

I usually shop online @Floralnomad and to be honest only really has an issue when people were panic buying for brexit and covid and now with everything going on it seems to be the same.
@Cabinfever10 When I was first diagnosed I was told about prescriptions and given a form but I didn’t bother, I do know I’m being unreasonable but if you see on the news a pregnant woman having a meltdown in the gluten free aisle that’ll be me!

I just bought the Panasonic SD-r2530KXC bread maker from Amazon. Not the cheapest at all but it has great reviews from people making gluten free bread. So far I've only tried making normal bread with gluten but I wanted the gluten free option for when my parents visit. I'm a bit in love with it. 5 minutes of work and it comes out clean so I just need to give it a quick wipe down.

FluffyTeddyBear · 09/10/2021 21:51

I have had absolutely zero issue getting my usual GF food.

Mymapuddlington · 09/10/2021 21:53

That looks fancy @MilduraS I’m going to ask Santa for one!

Figgygal · 09/10/2021 21:53

My dh is a coeliac I’d agree with you but just for the fact his bread costs us a fucking fortune

DameFanny · 09/10/2021 21:54

I've stopped buying gf bread because it all tastes of sand and sadness. When I ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE NOW something bready I make a flat-ish bread - equal quantity by weight plain flour and yoghurt with a pinch of xanthum, spoon of soda bicarb, bit of olive oil. Dry fry in a hot pan about 2 minutes a side.

Also cheese soda bread, but I don't make that very often because it's not unlike a loaf of cheese scone and very hard to stop eating.

Dddccc · 09/10/2021 21:55

Nope unfortunately gf food is available in every supermarket, number one thing that should be free on prescription is asthma inhalers

Brusca · 09/10/2021 21:55

Warburtons sell GF bread direct now, usually next day delivery:

It is amazing. I use a Panasonic bread maker to make coeliac ds 2 loaves of gf bread twice a week. It makes things so much easier than doing all the work yourself and so much nicer than the cardboard shop bread.
Comedycook · 09/10/2021 21:55

Yabvu.

There are other foods you can eat.
