To think gluten free prescriptions should come back?

I think I probably am but with all the panic buying people are buying gluten free stuff. I’m diagnosed coeliac and it’s hard enough finding food that isn’t ridiculously expensive never mind when you go to the single shelf in the co op to see it empty. Maybe I’m just hungry?!

I doubt it is people who aren't gluten intolerant buying it! More likely those thar are buying an extra loaf for the freezer just in case .
All supply chains are now just in time, or feck all on the shelf if there is a minor hiccup.
Is there a Baker near you thatcould put what you want to one side?

We are no longer friends

@marriednotdead I just use regular plain live yoghurt because I've always got it in the fridge. The idea is something acidic - to react with the bicarb - in something a bit creamy, for mouth feel. So you could add lemon juice to non dairy milk maybe? The trick is to go by weight not volume. Mix your flour, xanthum (if gf flour) and bicarb, then match the weight with your yoghurt or milk and lemon juice. The ratio for lemon juice would usually be a teaspoon for 200ml iirc so adjust accordingly.

I usually mix with a spatula to a paste, then pat into flat rounds with floured hands. If you get them thin enough and the pan hot you can sometimes get them to puff up like pittas.

A Baker. You mean somebody whose entire shop is full of cross contaminants?

@Helenluvsrob

Sorry to be maybe a bit harsh but no one “ needs “ to eat wheat or wheat substitutes. You may fancy toast and it’s sad you can’t have it - but you can have a bowl of chips and that’s pretty much it ting the same carb spot.

Rice , pulses , potatoes , chickpea flour pancakes ( totally yummy , high protein ,nutritious , cheap ) all excellent , value for money fill you up foods.

Except that there's wheat flour in McCains chips.

“ Someone on here said it’s not a health issue… it really is”

Sorry, that was me. I accidentally missed off “service” from “health service”. Absolutely agree that Coeliac disease and the need to avoid gluten is a health issue for the person concerned.

When my husband had to go on a yeast-free diet a few years ago, I made this; but I baked it in a regular loaf tin. It came out just like ordinary bread.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 10/10/2021 13:13

No,, not at all. Anyhing that can be bought of the shelf should be rather than put more strain on the NHS.

But that's the point - the OP (as have I) found that it's not on the shelf.

Nobody wants to pay a prescription charge or buy a pre payment certificate, but when the shelves have been cleared of GF bread, GF flour, GF cereals, GF pasta, GF noodles, GF snacks, GF crackers, GF crisps, GF pizza bases, GF chicken, GF ham, GF Oats if they can be eaten at all, GF fish products, GF wraps, GF tortillas, GF brownies, GF cakes, GF sauces, GF curry pastes, GF soy sauce, GF gravy granules, GF everything except the biscuits because they're rank - perhaps going back on prescription would at least guarantee a small supply of the absolute basics of bread or flour.

Rosesareyellow · 10/10/2021 13:30

Nobody needs bread or biscuits but little things like a biscuit with your cuppa is nice!

Not really the point of the NHS to pay for ‘nice things’ OP.

Rosesareyellow · 10/10/2021 13:37

Except that there's wheat flour in McCains chips.

Don’t think the poster specified McCain. Other brands are available. Or - (make sure you’re sat down for this, your mind will be blown) you could just cut up a potato…

VickyEadieofThigh · 10/10/2021 13:42

@Malin52

If they have run out of the highly processed GF stuff just buy fresh food? Meat, veggies, dairy. No I don't think the NHS should be paying for GF jam tarts.
Yep.

We don't eat bread or products made with flour and have a fantastic diet, based on fresh foods.

DameFanny · 10/10/2021 13:42

I haven't tried that @sueelleker, but I tend to do little and often with gf flour because it's never as nice after the first 24 hours (sand and sadness again)

@DameFanny Thanks so much! Haven’t had anything akin to bread in the last decade so I’m very excited Grin

@Rosesareyellow make sure you’re sat down for this, your mind will be blown - prescription doesn’t always mean free from the NHS.
Ellabella222 · 10/10/2021 13:54

NHS GF prescriptions didn’t include jam tarts or biscuits. It was only ever bread and pasta. Well where I live anyway.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/10/2021 13:55

@621CustardCream438

Of all the things I want the NHS to prioritise, issuing and processing and dispensing prescriptions for products that can be purchased “off the shelf”/entirely lived without are not even close to the top of my list.

Your problem could probably be sorted by going to a bigger supermarket, making a special order with your supermarket or if it really is a major issue for lots of people, supermarkets rationing such products to only those with medical need. It really doesn’t need to trouble the NHS.

I completely agree with this - about fifteen years ago gluten free bread simply wasn't available in supermarkets - now there are shelves full of the stuff (and I mostly use small "express" versions of major supermarkets, not large stores), and gluten free options in most restaurants. campaign to have them restricted maybe - but who to? diagnosed CD, gluten intolerent? TBH, most local supermarkets have reduced GF items in the reduced bin most evenings.

Sigh. It's something that irritated me the other day in the Coop and Tesco's. You could get McCains (with gluten), McCains fancy (with gluten), other brands (with gluten), but not the common or garden Aunt Bessies (without gluten) - also repeated in Waitrose. Nobody needs flour added to potatoes and oil.

You could also bake all your own bread and biscuits, make your own pasta and never allow one morsel of processed food past your lips, too. But very few people do, especially when they a) work and b) have other autoimmune disease, so they're fucking tired by the end of the week and would just like egg and chips in twenty minutes flat.

@M4J4

Where did I say it did? We all know what a prescription charge is Confused. If you want to be sarky, fine - I’m a very sarky person too - but make sure it actually makes sense first.

Ellabella222 · 10/10/2021 14:01

Large white sliced in Aldi is 50p. Cheapest gf loaf is a third of that size and is £1.80 in Sainsbury’s. Aldi doesn’t stock GF where I live. Pasta is again twice the price of the cheapest non GF pasta.

No one is saying coeliacs should get free jam tarts. I can afford a GF diet but it is definitely is more expensive for staples. As I said previously, my coeliac cousin is on benefits. She can’t afford it.

If it’s a medical need then people shouldn’t have to pay double for bog standard food.

Rosesareyellow · 10/10/2021 14:04

@NeverDropYourMooncup making your own chips is hardly comparable to making and shaping pasta from scratch or your own bread Hmm

Of course you said it Confused

You said it’s not the job of the NHS to pay for nice things, implying prescriptions = free.

If you’re going to be sarky, make sure you remember what you’ve said before.
@NeverDropYourMooncup making your own chips is hardly comparable to making and shaping pasta from scratch or your own bread Hmm
Very true, it isn't. You aren't at risk of setting the entire house on fire from chucking some yeast, warm water and salt into a pound of wheatflour, or adding water/eggs to a pound of 00 and then chucking it in a pan of boiling water, for a start.

Larryyourwaiter · 10/10/2021 14:36

DD only eats one brand of GF bread. If I am lucky I can find one loaf of it (£2.80) in a supermarket. I might have to spend several hours driving around to find that, or get friends to check stock. I buy it on top of the prescription because the loaves are so tiny.
At Christmas they used to reduce the GF stock to make more room for other stuff, it was a fucking nightmare.

@INeedNewShoes

Muggles Confused At best you're making a prat of yourself; at worst you're being unnecessarily divisive!

Muggles... ffs. You're not that special you know!

Thank you. I think I rolled my eyes so much at "muggles" that I sprained them.
