Who starts to reply to a thread and then thinks 'Oh shut the f*ck up'?

Walkingalot · 07/10/2021 23:05

I've been on Mumsnet a long time, under different names, different topics etc.
Interested to know if anyone else has written really heartfelt replies and then just deleted them. For me, it's not a confidence thing or the fact that someone has already had tonnes of replies. I can't put my finger on why I write and delete! Seems such a waste of effort.
Am I being unreasonable to do this, I should just reply and not care about the consequences (tendency to be a bit blunt when I write/shoot from the hip).

Shoot not hoot :(

Tiramiwho · 07/10/2021 23:45

I'll be just thinking how interesting and origina my own little nugget to the thread will be, then I realise it's been ongoing for a few days and dozens of people have already got there first, word for word pretty much 🙃

BurntO · 07/10/2021 23:46

More than I post tbh

Rogue1001 · 07/10/2021 23:48

@M4J4

I do this for a number of reasons:
  • adding my tuppence but then realising everyone else has already said something similar
  • realising my post is sounding a bit testy so better not to say it
  • knowing responding will just get me drawn into a long argument
All of these, plus Realised I've been drinking so just spouting drunken tosh
Purplewithred · 07/10/2021 23:49

Absolutely.

Walkingalot · 07/10/2021 23:49

@Anordinarymum - Oh they are the worst. I feel so betrayed! When I've gone against my better judgement and actually posted and it all turns out to be a troll!!
I must admit that I sometimes write a reply but then copy it and check back later. 99.9% I end up not posting it.

OP posts:
VillanellesOrangeCoat · 07/10/2021 23:50

My people! Grin

Walkingalot · 07/10/2021 23:51

@Rogue1001 - a little bit of that going on here Blush.

Loveshelly · 07/10/2021 23:51

The only time I don’t do this is when I’ve had wine. Then I immediately have to hide the thread and pretend I didn’t post at all.

GooodMythicalMorning · 07/10/2021 23:55

All the time!

Walkingalot · 07/10/2021 23:56

@Loveshelly - Lol. When you wake up and remember you were on MN

OP posts:
notangelinajolie · 07/10/2021 23:56

I do this. Spend ages on a reply and then think fuck it. And delete.

Shamoo · 08/10/2021 00:02

Yes definitely. Often because I know I will be stressed about getting dragged into an argument, especially when the original post is quite nasty/bigoted and it triggers me a bit. In my wiser moments I manage to press delete and walk away 😂

Also worry it might be outing, like anybody could give two hoots who I am!

Walkingalot · 08/10/2021 00:14

@Shamoo - yep, paranoia - automatically think everyone must know who I am, lol. Then there's the detectorists - ah, but you said on a previous thread.......

OP posts:
Thedogscollar · 08/10/2021 00:22

@Walkingalot
Yep me too. Depends on the OP. If it's something I'm passionate and knowledgeable about I will say my piece.

Holskey · 08/10/2021 00:46

My number 1 reason for doing this is that I realise I'm not that interested afterall and so won't be back to read further comments, and therefore don't want the thread in my notifications.

Yellownotblue · 08/10/2021 01:00

YABU OP. I was going to type a long reply but couldn’t be bothered 😉

NCBlossom · 08/10/2021 01:04

Yep I do this.

Sometimes I think - oh why the hell do I care anyway?!

Other times, I disagree but I don’t want the poster to feel bad, so compose it well and realise they will never even read it. Or I try to explain stuff and the other person is just out for a bun fight, or it’s a troll…

And then I remember how some people were just so bloody kind to me in posts, who gave me genuine heartfelt considerate advice. So that’s what makes me post again.

NCBlossom · 08/10/2021 01:05

You will read mine… hello?… Blush

SnowyPetals · 08/10/2021 04:14

I do this when I start typing, it turns into more than a couple of sentences, and I realise I really don't want to invest. Or if it's one of those AIBU threads where everyone is saying that the OP is unreasonable but the OP just keeps coming back to say they aren't.

Sacreblue · 08/10/2021 04:44

Similar to PP’s reasons Grin and additionally my ex stalks me on mn Hmm so sometimes I can’t be bothered to indulge his bs nc

Nightbringer · 08/10/2021 04:50

I do this. But like pp for a mix of reasons.

The main one being I suspect op is just about to claim 'causing me problems in RL' and have it deleted. One poster in particular does this, comes back and tells the story again leaving out huge bits of info. So it's pointless

Sometimes, I just realised I can't be arsed, or saying the same as others.

Sometimes I read it back and think I sound like a twat. Sometimes I realise it's too outing and I will have to bloody name change again and can't be arsed Grin

the80sweregreat · 08/10/2021 06:53

I tend to waffle on a bit
The worst posters are those who pick out a tiny bit of your paragraph to hi light , knowing it's out of context just to pick a fight.
Then you have to justify your missive and you know they have disappeared anyway !

WizardHowl · 08/10/2021 06:54

Allllll the time!

For pretty much the same reasons as everyone’s mentioned. Unwilling to have the argument, it becomes clear the OP doesn’t really want the advice they claim to or change their story, everyone’s already made the same point, or I just suddenly realise that no one gives a shit about what I have to say and I don’t care about the thread either Grin

Plus I’m one of those wanging-on vegans too Wink

RoseMartha · 08/10/2021 06:56

Yes often

Or I type a reply go and check what was said and in the process lose it and cant be bothered to type it out again. That has also happened when I would have been the OP. (This is via the app might not happen otherwise, I very rarely use MN on a pc).
