I feel like at 48, I have really started to age- creepy neck, a bit jowly, going a bit grey and not feeling great to be honest! I look after myself - don’t really drink as I see it on my face, wear nice clothes, nice hair etc but it’s becoming an effort ☹️ Wasn’t expecting it actually!! I always thought I looked pretty good for my age. I know it’s vain and I shouldn’t care but it’s just weird!!

Don't worry OP, your eyesight will soon deteriorate to the point where you cease to be able to observe these changes.

My mum said that 86 was a turning point for her when she lost a lot of energy.
After about 98 when she was in a care home her life became very difficult for her. She finally died asked 103. I really miss her

DoYouLikeOwls · 07/10/2021 22:07

@Ragwort

Gosh this makes depressing reading, I am 63 and feel fine, of course my hair is greyer but it is thick and luxurious Grin , I've never been slim so I am not mourning the lack of a 'fit body' but I think I look OK, my mum (88) & I have been out drinking Prosecco in the evening sunshine today and whilst we are clearly not glamorous we are both happy and healthy and even young people are making friendly conversation with us (!!).
I love this.

I'm 49 and actually feel I look OK. My Mum has aged well hopefully taking after her. Yes, I know I don't look 20 anymore but not unhappy with what I look like.

I lost two very close relations when they were young though so I'm probably just grateful for anything.

NoisyBrain · 07/10/2021 22:07

For me it seemed to pretty much coincide with turning 40. I had DS at 39 so being bloody knackered probably didn't help.

I have a fair few wrinkles but it's from the neck down where it's really gone wrong. Turkey neck, skin tags, age spots, crepey stomach skin, saggy arse. Ugh.

silverbubbles · 07/10/2021 22:07

@speakout

Mid 40s, but now at hearly 60, I have been doing hard core yoga for several years , and my body is 25.
is it really? how much yoga do you do ?
Spuriously17windows · 07/10/2021 22:08

At 42 I went back training for a sport I used to play to a very high level until 32. In my head I kind of looked the same and felt the same as I had 10 years earlier and didn’t think twice about my age being a barrier. Sadly I realised after several months of training hard that my body had changed a lot in those 10 years. I just hadn’t realised it as I hadn’t been pushing the limits. But yeah 42 I realised I was old and my horizon was significantly narrowed.

DameMaureen · 07/10/2021 22:09

I think that women often seem to age between 30 and 45 ish when they have kids and either don't have time to look after theselves or go very - can't use any of the words without getting a bollocking - mumsy, frumpy, dragged down by kids etc . There's a big change between 20s and early 40s . The good news I think is that THEN you start to get better looking and even younger looking once kids are off your hands and that 45/50 onwards many women seem to develop a lovely style combined with the confidence of age which is a major factor in your overall appearance . They often have more time and money to take more care of themselves and a bit of Botox ( even filler for jowls) is a great help as is well looked after hair .HRT can help with menopause and other health issues related to ageing . I think many of you are just in that "awkward stage" . I look better now than I did at 50 .

RiverSkater · 07/10/2021 22:15

Thank you @SpaceshiptoMars I might give the lemon a go, not sure about the sauerkraut though! 😆

@highlandcoo Faceworks. There is an App, books and a Facebook group.

There is a woman in the group who has frankly taken at least 15 years off I reckon. Every time I think I can't be bothered to do the exercises I look at her progress photos and that makes me do them!

Spaghettipie1 · 07/10/2021 22:18
  1. I just look a bit jowly and haggard 😩 2 young kids and a pandemic aren't helping!
Hello1290 · 07/10/2021 22:20

52 - always looked a good few years younger but at 52 my neck suddenly turned into a severe turkey neck literally overnight - plus I've put on a couple of stone. Menopause has been the cause for me I think.

Diverami · 07/10/2021 22:27

Maybe it is time to become a food fanatic and eat the stuff variously recommended for keeping you looking young and go easy on the other stuff (coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, lots of delicious pastries etc). For instance, hyaluronic acid, eaten or applied has helped me a bit. Lately, I have developed crepey skin on the arms (and had a crepey neck for years) and am trying marine collagen and keeping hydrated. However, if you are lucky enough to live long enough, just enjoy the next stage.

DoctorSnortles · 07/10/2021 22:28

I'm 46 and suddenly look awful. The pandemic has definitely exacerbated it - I am an anxious person and now wear 18 months of intense worry on my face. Mask wearing at work has meant drinking less water and my skin is blotchy with frequent spots.

I had a terrible haircut in the summer, which makes me look doubly bad, but am too skint to have it re-done. I am fat and can't afford new clothes.

I look ancient and feel shit.

highlandcoo · 07/10/2021 22:30

Thanks RiverSkater Smile I'll have a look.

Like Ragwort above - we are a similar age - I feel fine generally about how I look. Many friends have had real health worries recently and I'm lucky to be pretty fit and well; I think your priorities do often change as you get older. Having said that, my mum and granny both had double (Granny triple really) chins and I'd quite like to avoid that if I can!

I think DameMaureen has it right too ... you sometimes have more time to think about yourself when you get older and that helps.

I tell myself that in ten years' time I'll look at photos of how I look now and wish I still looked that young, so no point worrying about it!

stealingbeauty · 07/10/2021 22:32

I noticed quite a change to my skin at 35. Open pores especially, and crows feet.

I’m going to start saving for a facelift after reading this 😟 It’s a bit depressing really. Change is hard.

funinthesun19 · 07/10/2021 22:32

I’m feeling it now at 31 but I’m sure when I’m 48 I will look back and laugh and think how young I was at 31.

I'm just about 58 (November)and noticed about three years ago a significant change; my face/skin began to have a droopy look (jowls starting to form) and a couple of lines on forehead, lines round eyes even when not smiling. Pretty depressing but really glad I don't have to look at me Grin. I've never used soap or creams on my face, don't know if that's made a difference.

Much worse are my hands, I'm getting 'old lady' hands and I hate it much more than my face to be honest.

Hair? I stopped dying it aged 50, deciding that f*ck it, lets see how much grey there is (saved a fortune). Turned out not much and what there was was sort of hidden at the sides. I switched to a fringe ( which I learned to trim during lockdown) and this hid the forehead, too! And a shortish bob and this disguised my grey sides beautifully...for a few years. Now I see the grey has began to be visible even despite my best hairdressing attempts.

I sort of understand why women decide to go for a facelift now, but I won't because I am a big baby about pain and I don't care enough, anyway.

I overhauled my diet and lifestyle six years ago and this I think has been helpful in keeping me supple and healthy as I approach 'old age' and retirement. I'm much more active now than I was in my 30s and 40s when kids were born/young/teens/left home. More time for me.

loopylauren · 07/10/2021 22:34

@ParkheadParadise I'm so sorry. Prayers xx

Miseryl · 07/10/2021 22:35

I looked about 18 between the ages of 18 and 34. I honestly barely aged. Had my second kid at 35 and aged about 15 years overnight! 😂😂 She was a bad sleeper and I looked exhausted all the time.

I'm in my early 40s and haven't aged much since then due to getting a lot more sleep, better skin care, losing weight, better diet, Botox and fillers. It is inevitable I'll age but hopefully it wont be as dramatic as last time and I'll just age gradually. I do love Botox and fillers and can't imagine not using them now.

MiaMarshmallows · 07/10/2021 22:35
  1. Started to get a lot of grey hair, wrinkles around the eyes. Was never a looker, far from it but from 36 it went even more downhill.
CookPassBabtridge · 07/10/2021 22:35

Can I ask those who say the menopause is to blame, doesn't HRT stop a lot of the effects?

Cruiser11 · 07/10/2021 22:37

I found HRT to be really beneficial for my skin and hair.

Nogoodusername · 07/10/2021 22:42

40/41, and the pandemic has aged me about 10 years

Opalfeet · 07/10/2021 22:45

41

Luminousnose · 07/10/2021 22:45

Probably 50ish. I don’t have wrinkles, bit jowly I guess, but OMG the facial hair! 60 now and it’s a battle to keep the little buggers plucked and under control. I think I’ve finally caught them all, feeling okay with myself, out for a lovely dinner with friends and then WTF I find a two inch long hair sprouting out of my neck - where the hell did that come from and how did it get so long without me spotting it?! I swear I’m going to give up soon and get a job with a circus as a bearded lady!

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 07/10/2021 22:48

Had child at 40, fully menopausal by 42/43. I've aged a lot since then. My child is also not a sleeper, so even without menopause I'd be a bit broken by now. I'm 48 in January, and I definitely look fully 48.
