To ask what age you suddenly really started to age?

I feel like at 48, I have really started to age- creepy neck, a bit jowly, going a bit grey and not feeling great to be honest! I look after myself - don’t really drink as I see it on my face, wear nice clothes, nice hair etc but it’s becoming an effort ☹️ Wasn’t expecting it actually!! I always thought I looked pretty good for my age. I know it’s vain and I shouldn’t care but it’s just weird!!

  1. I looked up in the mirror and for a split second I thought I had just seen my mum. I am the absolute spitting image of her! (She had me very young so I was a teenager when she was 33 so that's the image I have of her in my mind).

@Onedaylikethis21

I first started to 'age' at around 47/48 years old. I seem to age suddenly actually!!!

From my early to mid 20s, I always looked 7 or 8 years younger than my age. At 40, I went to New Zealand for a birthday trip. Loads of people were shocked I was 40, and swore I looked 32/33.

I got married in my mid 20s, and looked 18 on my wedding day.

At 46, I looked more like 38.

Then by 48, I suddenly looked 50. So I seemed to age 12 years, in 2 years. Shock

Within 2 years, I went from people thinking was in my late 30s, to people inviting me to over 50s groups. It was such a shock, and upset me more than I care to admit. (At the time.)

I am in my mid 50s now, and people still think I am in my early to mid 50s, so I don't think I have aged much in the past 5 years. I see women of 58-60 in my village who look 55. So I don't think I will age much for another ten years, and will probably look mid to late 50s at 63-64. Then I will age suddenly again, and suddenly look 70 when I am 68!

So yeah, looking 8-10 years younger for around 25 years, caught up with me eventually!!! I didn't end up jowly or saggy faced or anything, I just suddenly looked much closer to my age by 47-48, but I can't articulate why. Few more lines and wrinkles, started to go grey at the temples, and just looked 50, (when I looked 38 two years earlier!!!) WEIRD!!!

'Suddenly ageing' seems to be around their late 40s for many women, but we can all take comfort in the fact that we probably won't age 'suddenly' again for about 18-20 years. Grin

With this pandemic!

41 when it started, nearly 43 now. It’s added years.

HesterShaw1 · 07/10/2021 20:19

Very gradual for me but early 40s maybe? Combination of jawline and neck loosening, eyelids drooping, constant back and neck pain, bum dropping! My hair has become much thinner and harder to manage. Putting on make up is now somehow much harder to make it look good. Knees hurt and make noises. I'm not really that menopausal yet (46)

On the flip side, I'm out of my joyless marriage and having a great time with a similarly middle aged man who I adore 😁

MissOrganisedMe · 07/10/2021 20:21

@Ozanj

If you really hate it then get a cosmetic procedure. Life’s too short to stressa and get depressed about this type of stuff
Absolutely this!
theleafandnotthetree · 07/10/2021 20:22

@LeaveYourHatOn

48. I've really noticed it in the last year. I don't know how much of it is due to lockdowns/covid/general shite and how much is natural, but I feel like I've aged 5 years in the last 12 months. It's really depressing actually.
47 here and I would agree, I think the last year and a half has really sapped my vitality. I feel I've lost my mojo and I do believe that bit of spark helps to look younger longer. I also feel Ive aged 5 years im a year
TheCategoryIs · 07/10/2021 20:22

My skin is probably better than it ever has been at 45, less oily and finally my cystic acne is under control. It's more the tear troughs, number 11s, marionette lines and double chin :(

BippityBoppity87 · 07/10/2021 20:22

I'm starting to notice now at 34. Starting to get a few grey hairs and my skin doesn't look as "glowy" as it used to. Hard to describe. That fresh dewy look without needing makeup you have when you're younger. Or maybe I just need to up my skin care routine

diamondpony80 · 07/10/2021 20:23

I thought around 40, but after reading these posts I’m thinking there’s much worse to come Sad

TheYellowOne · 07/10/2021 20:24

43 for me. I was quite smug turning 40, pleased with how I looked. However 43 saw the start of what feels like uncontrollable weight gain, a less than firm jawline and a scraggly neck. Interestingly it was also the age at which my periods started to go awry so presumably the drop in oestrogen is behind it all.

Dartfordwarblerautumn · 07/10/2021 20:26

Another one at the start of peri menopause age 46….so much start3d to go wrong with my body and mind …still have some menopausal symptoms like flushes and brain fog 14 years later…I don’t think it will ever go away now. I felt old overnight,

sofakingcool · 07/10/2021 20:28

I'm 41 and recently have started to look more my age I think

I've always been young looking, got regular comments when people found out how old my eldest is, but not so much these days SadGrin

My Mum has always been young looking, but I think she's starting to look her age now - early 60's

RedBonnet · 07/10/2021 20:28

54, two years ago, and it seemed to happen overnight 😭 mainly sagging cheeks and Turkey neck. Don't think using teams for work meetings helps, although I leave the camera off as much as possible!

silverbubbles · 07/10/2021 20:28

I am 48 and have also just started to really notice my ageing.
Not just the visible signs of deterioration but also in the lack of enthusiasm and loss of fun in my personality. I just be bothered anymore and quite like the thought of being home alone doing quiet things and avoiding a fuss. If I do anything 'exciting' then I feel like I need to stay home to recover.... I have become really boring.

Namebunny · 07/10/2021 20:30

LouLou789 exactly what happened to me. Treatments and mental stress and sudden chemical menopause made me into a 90 year old overnight.
Nice to know not just me- everyone else seems to sail through treatments and run marathons. Felt guilty because I was so rubbish at cancer! Hope you are better now💐

Practicebeingpatient · 07/10/2021 20:31

About 52, so post menopause. I had a couple of tweakments to tighten up my jawline and I have regular botox to open up my tired looking eyes but really I just have to embrace it. I can't expect to look young now I have my OAP bus pass!

On the plus side I've been doing regular yoga for a few years now so I'm still strong and flexible with no aches or pains ... yet.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 07/10/2021 20:31

Oh no why did I click on this thread 😂

HesterShaw1 · 07/10/2021 20:32

This thread has actually inspired me to get fit and have as much fun as I can.

My cousin had breast cancer at 32 and had an early menopause. I count myself lucky I just have rubbish hair, a slack jawline and clicky knees to contend with at 46.

sage46 · 07/10/2021 20:33

I was quite pleased with myself till about 53 and overnight my neck started to resemble corrugated iron. I am grateful now at 58 just to be reasonably healthy.

Supersimkin2 · 07/10/2021 20:33

44 - undiagnosed thyroid failure sent everything plummeting south never to return.

But I did all the packing and all the lifting and shifting of moving house on my own last month - bar two bits of huge furniture. Only time I’ve felt aged but so worth battling the drain of time.

TheSpanishApartment · 07/10/2021 20:36
  1. It’s bad now at 48 and I haven’t hit the menopause yet. My facial skin has gone all saggy. I still looked quite youthful at 40.
AuntMargo · 07/10/2021 20:38

52 - overweight but not overly concerned about that - gone fully silver grey, love the colour and happy with it - high heels, god no ! Gave them up years ago, have no inclination to every wear another pair in my life !

Always need a pee, up 4/5 times a night, dodgy knee, always getting my words mixed up. 10pm is a late night! Love elasticated waists, anything stretchy and comfy, skechers are my go too brand.

Snoken · 07/10/2021 20:40

I’m 43 now and the upkeep is getting harder and harder. I feel a bit colourless these days as I started going grey and thought it would be a good idea to go lighter so it’s less obvious. I just feel so dull without my brown hair though. I also have osteoarthritis and my eye sight is going. Daily pilates and face yoga a few times a week keeps the worse of it off though. Just need to find some colour again.

expatmigrant · 07/10/2021 20:40

Nothing wrong with caring about it. I'm 57, still working, cycle about 200km/week and do strength training. If you are fit you will cope with ageing in much more positive way. I am also on HRT. Think my thinning hair is probably what bothers me most. Have not gone down the going grey way either. Yet to see a woman who looks good with grey hair, although Instagram tries to convince us otherwise.
I look after my skin but have not had any Botox or other tweaks.
White teeth are important. Nothing worse than a set of yellow knashers for ageing.
I don't want to sound patronising but it saddens me sometimes when I see women who have just given in and have stopped making an effort.
For me fitness is paramount. My DM died of cancer at 38 so I am trying my very best and see every year as a bonus.
