Is the UK about to collapse?

Penfield · 07/10/2021 14:20

Sorry - There was probably a better way to put this.

Does anyone else have a feeling that we are close to some collapse, explosion, disintegration of society ...

With gas prices, petrol shortages, inflation, Brexit fall out, Covid, gaslighting government etc

I feel like we're on the edge of something - big ...

Some combination of thick/ lazy/ ignorant/ frightened and incapable of coping with reality.

You sound lovely. 😂

Just because people don't agree with you, it doesn't make them thick. In fact it makes them uber tolerant having had to.listen to your increasingly maniacal ramblings. 😏
Ummmm.... I didn't say people were thick. Some of them are. Some of them deny reality for the other reasons stated.

I am lovely. Thank you. Smile

Sorry you find discussion "maniacal". Perhaps this isn't the place for you.

OddSockReunion · 07/10/2021 21:49

@HesterShaw1

I think people have spent the last 18 months stressed and anxious and worrying and they're sick to death of it.

Call it head in sand if you like.

Yep. Ostrich syndrome is rampant.
madisonbridges · 07/10/2021 21:50

@Penfield
a government that doesn’t give two hoots about normal people.

What do you define as normal people?

Mollymalone123 · 07/10/2021 21:51

@julieca yes I agree but then I didn’t have to keep scrolling past endless threads about it on social media platforms and my newsfeed being drowned in political statements about how everything is going to the dogs 😂
I really don’t remember a feeling of panic either.As previous poster said-we are a spoilt and entitled generation

Pythonista · 07/10/2021 21:52

When was the last time a government was in power that gave a shit about anyone?

julieca · 07/10/2021 21:52

@Mollymalone123 I think a lot of people can cope easier when younger.

OddSockReunion · 07/10/2021 21:55
@OddSockReunion. Don't change your argument because you lost it. You said food and petrol shortages were because of Brexit. That is wrong. There are no empty shelves and no petrol shortage. Therefore you can't blame Brexit for two problems that don't exist. Although you do sound a bit manic, so maybe you can. 🤷
What? There are many empty shelves and petrol shortages still and that is, largely, a result of Brexit. I couldn't have stated it any more plainly, including a list of the reasons why this has happened - which were anticipated to result if the UK voted to leave the EU. What on Earth are you talking about? Far from changing my argument, I'm saying exactly what I've said for 6 years or so now since this collective insanity in the UK began.

MarshaBradyo · 07/10/2021 21:56

OddSock I looked up rates in EU countries as had heard vaguely we were around 5% and then saw Spain Greece etc higher

I read this
Among European countries, Greece is currently suffering the worst unemployment rate at 15.1 percent, followed by Spain at 15.1 percent while Czechia has the lowest unemployment rate in Europe, at 2.8 percent.4 Aug 2021

But no I haven’t looked into the way stats are compiled. How does Greece do it?

Also looked at definition: The unemployed are people of working age who are without work, are available for work, and have taken specific steps to find work.

You seem in anger mode but can you link to what you have read? I can’t find anything that shows discrepancy

Penfield · 07/10/2021 21:57

@HesterShaw1

I think people have spent the last 18 months stressed and anxious and worrying and they're sick to death of it.

Call it head in sand if you like.

This explains why people are so willingly blind to what’s going on, to what the government is doing to them.

I couldn’t fathom it. We’ve marched before. Why not now?

Thank you Hester. It should have been obvious, of course. You’ve explained it.

@MarshaBradyo Greece is a very poor country. You have to compare to the G7 countries.

FruHagen · 07/10/2021 21:58

Nah. Turn off the news. You're the UK, bursting full of brilliant, creative and gritty people. It'll be grand. Just turbulence.

OddSockReunion · 07/10/2021 21:59

Reading this thread makes it even plainer why the country is such a mess and will remain so.

Apparently an unusually cold winter is expected. I hope that all of the people who didn't vote for this shitshow - "knowing exactly what it would mean, don't you dare patronise us with facts blah blah blah" - stay warm and have plenty of food.

JBlow · 07/10/2021 21:59

National Grid has just warned there will be blackouts this winter.

Thanks. Saved me having to reply to the nonsense. What is the point of trying to discuss economics with someone who thinks that the UK and Greece are comparable?! Confused🤣🤯

MarshaBradyo · 07/10/2021 22:01

Ok

The UK harmonised unemployment rate for Q2 2021 was 4.7%, down from 4.9% in Q1. This was above Germany (3.7%) but below the US (5.9%) and France (8.2%). The rate for the Eurozone fell from 8.1% to 8.0% between Q1 and Q2 2001, while in the G7 it fell from 5.7% to 5.6%.

mustlovegin · 07/10/2021 22:01

OP it's rather pathetic that you opened a very alarmist thread just to peddle anti-government propaganda

MarshaBradyo · 07/10/2021 22:01

God you are rude Oddsocks

I can see why you are so angry about life.

Alpacinoshoohaa · 07/10/2021 22:02

Well we did collapse in 2008 didn't we.
Run on the banks, repossession everywhere.

Container ships are stuck off shore in the US, other places are still battling covid, we seem to be getting through it some how?
All of Europe are bejng held to ransom via putin and gas.. I don't think so.

madisonbridges · 07/10/2021 22:04

@julieca

National Grid has just warned there will be blackouts this winter.
No, it didn't. According to the Guardian, it said ...it believed there was enough slack in the system to avoid blackouts affecting households and factories.
woodhill · 07/10/2021 22:05

Does feel like the energy crisis has been orchestrated.

Is it sour grapes for Brexit

Why didn't the UK store some gas earlier in the year as they knew this could happen

dreamingbohemian · 07/10/2021 22:07

@julieca

National Grid has just warned there will be blackouts this winter.
This is why comparisons to the 70s are silly. Everyday life these days is so dependent on having access to the internet and electricity.

e.g. all the shops in my local London neighbourhood went cashless during the pandemic. So what happens when there's no way for people to pay?

What happens when people can't charge their mobiles? Think about all the things you do with your phones.

TurquoiseDress · 07/10/2021 22:08

I do wonder how much of this feeling is due to the media scaremongering the whole time...

Petrol crisis!

Gas & utility bills through the roof!

Christmas food, items & toys will run out/not be supplied!

Not sure really...but can't deny inflation is on the up, interest rates have got to go up at some point & house prices (at least here in SE London) seem rather insane!

julieca · 07/10/2021 22:10

@madisonbridges I have literally just seen that news update as breaking news in a news app.
I have googled it and all the newspapers have stories saying this, even the Telegraph.
I have no idea if it will happen. but I will be making sure I have batteries for my torches.
