How much house work do you do in a day?

Just that really! I feel like if I don't scrub whole house in one day that I'm a lazy bastard!

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats, so need to vac and mop quite often

Daily; Dishwasher, kitchen surfaces, hoover with the cordless over a couple of floors (dog, pram and 5yo in and out so needs done) and laundry.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/10/2021 09:18

These people who scrub the whole house daily - what exactly do you mean? My interpretation of that would be: to wipe down all paintwork: skirtings, doors, bannisters, spindles, light switches, plugs, etc; hoover carpets and soft furnishings, mop hard floors; wipe all kitchen units, sinks, taps, utilities, tiles, etc; cleaner bathrooms top to bottom including under sinks, behind bogs, etc; dust all surfaces, polish all wood, etc., and not forgetting the oven and fridge.

I can only imagine it's possible in a tiny home with very little furniture/books/pictures, etc.

I do most of those things daily, I don't really care about inside cupboards/under the sink, I do have OCD and some days I'm more anxious than others and are just consumed by scrubbing every nook and cranny. I don't dust, I wipe up dust, because in my head (strange place) if I dust, it goes on the carpet, and I can't guarantee the hoover will suck up all the dust, so I wipe it up instead. It's definitely not necessary, the logical part of me knows that!
LindaEllen · 07/10/2021 09:45

Tbh not that much. There's only me and DP here now that DSS has moved to uni, and honestly the house just seems to stay clean and tidy for much longer. It's amazing how someone who spent their life gaming in their room can actually have such an impact on the rest of the house, but it's true!

We do the dishes and wipe round the kitchen once a day, and I'll put a wash on whenever I've got enough to fill the machine. Every Saturday morning the house gets a good clean and hoover, including bathroom. Other than that, we don't do a great deal. It's a very low maintenance house, and a few hours on a Saturday plus one hour a day tops for the rest of the week keeps it clean and tidy.

ACNHMAMA · 07/10/2021 09:45

Well I don't have pets for a start, so I imagine that reduces the workload somewhat.

We do a load of washing every day. Dishes after every meal. Kitchen gets a quick wipe down after cooking. Downstairs gets hoovered once a day (cos my kids make a mess when they eat) Toilets and sinks get a quick wipe daily (mainly because my kids wee everywhereHmm). Everything else gets done once or twice a week.

DH and I do this between us BTW.

FlyingPandas · 07/10/2021 09:51

I'm out at work in the afternoons and DC/DH are out at school/college work most of the day, so we certainly don't make as much mess in the house as we used to when the DC were little.

We don't have a cleaner, so I do about 1-1.5 hours housework each morning and have a rota for weekly cleaning, i.e.

  • Mondays, clean bathrooms and kitchen (only surfaces though not inside cupboards!)
  • Tuesdays dust and hoover throughout
  • Wednesdays clean out pets
  • Thursdays hoover again if necessary
  • Fridays change bedding.

The daily stuff is
-bed making (DC make their own)
-quickly wipe down bathrooms and kitchen surfaces
-sweep up crumbs or visible mess if I see it,
-laundry (I don't iron though unless absolutely essential)
-washing up after each meal. I'm really weird about using the dishwasher (will only use it if I can completely fill it up and put it on straight away - the thought of dirty dishes sitting in it all day to have more dirty dishes added before it finally goes on makes me feel ick, yes I realise that is bonkers!) so cutlery, crockery and cooking stuff is handwashed, dried and put away after each meal, and the worktops are wiped and dried.

Reading that back it sounds like quite a lot but honestly it's 9:50 as I type this and I have my planned daily chores and housework all done for the day and don't have to go to work till 12, so now have a couple of hours to pop to the shops/do a bit of gardening/read and faff, etc. (love gardening so that's definitely leisure time rather than a chore).

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2021 09:52

Couple of hours most weekdays, big, dusty old house, open fires, high ceilings with attendant cobwebs, several cats. 4/5 on a Friday (bathrooms, floor washing etc).

Pleasantly surprised to find out that my husband has been making enquiries about cleaners, says I have to do too much (he works but is physically unable to do very much other than cook, which he does sitting down). My initial reaction was to argue no, it’s fine but I gave it some thought and decided I agree with him!
We looked at downsizing, now our youngest is at university but could find nothing smaller that we would be happy living in that wasn’t priced extortionately for what it was. So a cleaner is a fair compromise, I think.

Housebears · 07/10/2021 09:54

@Reallyimeanreally2022 it is possible to keep a relatively clean house with that many but it takes up a lot of time!

I have the 3 giants and a cat however I have no carpets downstairs at all. Almost everything is as wipe cleanable as possible and I do wipe it all down daily. I wash all soft furnishings weekly including dog beds etc.
I’ve also got a paved dog run area with hot wash to clean and dry them when it’s wet or muddy and they sleep in the utility after a walk until the dirt has dried.
I also clean all skirtings/door frames pretty much daily especially where they tend to lean on them.

I have no doubt my house does have a dog whiff but I do try my best to keep it to a minimum…less likely to get burgled though so pros and cons Grin

hulahooper2 · 07/10/2021 09:56

I’m on a hunch group and can’t believe the people who say they clean their whole house every single day , why on earth would you clean a clean house

Furries · 07/10/2021 09:57

@Housebears - I’m not hear for the cleaning, but would love to know the breed of your three giants! I love big dogs.

Furries · 07/10/2021 09:57

Here, not hear!

LBOCS2 · 07/10/2021 10:00

On a daily basis we do the dishwasher and make sure the kitchen surfaces are clean. That's pretty much it. We have jobs and primary aged children, and spend a lot of time running around. Although I WFH, I don't usually have time for a lunch break so I definitely don't have time to be doing housework!

On a Friday I do a bit of a tidying blitz, and at the weekend we do the rest of the housework. But we do very little on a day to day basis.

Sandyd1035 · 07/10/2021 10:01

I clean about 3-4 hours a day when I’m not working have 2 dogs so I think everything always need cleaning . I know I need to stop has it’s taken over everything else 😬

Housebears · 07/10/2021 10:02

@Furries I have leonbergers. They are not too common but I have seen a few on this forum with them and met a few in real life now so they must be gaining popularity Grin

DeepaBeesKit · 07/10/2021 10:08

I load the dishwasher and wipe the kitchen counter if ive been cooking. On a wfh day I will sometimes put a load of washing on first thing and take it out at lunch.

We have a robot Hoover & mop and the cleaner comes once a week.

Dh and I both work so there isnt time for anything more.

bubblebath62636 · 07/10/2021 10:12

I do a few jobs everyday:

Put a load of laundry on
Wash pots (usually twice a day)
Wash/sterilize/make bottles
Hoover (2 dogs)
General tidy around a few times a day eg. Move toys, make beds, put crap away etc.

Innovationstandard · 07/10/2021 10:15

I'm not sure the OP meant they cleaned the whole house EVERY day, she said in ONE day. They haven't come back though so who knows...

Thecathouse · 07/10/2021 10:18

STAHM with a ton of pets (two large dogs, one cat, tones of reptiles and inverts and whatever wildlife is being rehabilitated at the time, plus outdoor feral cats) and a toddler

Daily - tidy round, dishes, mop and Hoover, surface wipes and a laundry load.

Not much time for the extras, they get done when it looks like it needs it.

Trust me as long as the floors, surfaces and toilets are clean, the odd bit of dust on the skirtings is nothing to worry about. Nobody has time for a top to bottom scrub daily, especially not when you have pets. Keep a mop, cloth and the Hoover ready for spot cleaning, tidy as you go, but otherwise don't be too worried about it.

FTM8987 · 07/10/2021 10:20

An hour a day - if I don’t do that (and I haven’t recently as I’ve been ill) I find the house descends into a real mess extremely quickly.

AnotherName456 · 07/10/2021 10:26

I tend to break it up during the week. So I'll dust the shelves one days then hoover the next and then wash floors the next. The kitchen gets done everyday though, so washing up, wiping surfaces and the hob etc as well as doing a couple of loads of washing

honeylulu · 07/10/2021 10:32

Not that much but we both work long hours (and I am now commuting to London again). So, just the basics to keep it ticking over:

  1. Make bed, general tidy up.
  2. Cook evening meal (take turns) and clear up kitchen daily (load dishwasher, wash up pans, wipe worktops/cooker and sweep any bits off floor, wipe down kitchen table and mats.
  3. Unload dishwasher if necessary (only run it when full).
  4. 2-3 loads laundry a week including hanging/folding/putting away.
  5. Everyone cleans up toilet after themselves if they soil it.
  6. Bins once a week.
  7. Ironing gets sent out.

That is about it during the week, mostly done in evenings. Really isn't time for anything else.

At the weekend we clean bathrooms (every week), mop kitchen floor (every week) dust (fortnightly), hoover (fortnightly), change bedding (fortnightly). Once a month we cream polish the leather furniture and clean the slate fireplaces. Other stuff like windows, cleaning out fridge, wax polishing wooden furniture is more sporadic and on a need to do basis.

House looks fine and not messy or dirty. Our neighbours have a cleaner who cleans EVERY DAY for 3 hours. I am baffled as to what she finds to do except dust and wipe surfaces that are already clean.

thecatsthecats · 07/10/2021 10:35

Whatever can be fitted into the time a cup of tea takes to brew multiplied by cups of tea.

Tidying up, sorting cat litter, bit of washing up.

We have a cleaner. My husband prefers to get stuck in for a couple of hours, I prefer to do the little bits at a time intersliced with "wait times". Though he prefers to pick up some mess as soon as it occurs.

It maddens me that he has to have a couple of hours to get stuck in and has high standards.

It maddens him that I have low standards and do continual small tidies, and if I throw something at the bin and miss, it's only getting picked up when I'm going that way.

But it works pretty well. Probably adds up to about the same with my 6*20m a day vs his 2h at the weekend.

TumtumTree · 07/10/2021 10:41

We have a cleaner once a week. IMO hoovering, dusting and cleaning the bathrooms only needs to be done once a week, so I never normally do any of that (unless cleaner can't come or something). We have cats but they are short haired and don't shed much.

Every day - cooking, cleaning up the kitchen, laundry.

Thimphu · 07/10/2021 10:45

Depends what you class as housework - I keep up with the 'perpetuals' well - laundry/dishes/tidying/kitchen surface/making beds (that technically everyone in the house is supposed to do) - I guess that take 30-45 mins/day on average for me?

The next level of very basic clean - floors/vacuuming/bathrooms aren't done daily (unfortunately) but on average 15 mins day, maybe less. I'll do deeper/better cleans on a very infrequent ad-hoc basis - excluding those I'll go with 1 hr/day but most of that I don't really class as housework more tidying up after yourself and people around you who pretend to be incapable.

Furries · 07/10/2021 10:54

Three Leo’s, flipping Nora! I would love that many, but sadly not to be. At least with a Leo you’re not having to include cleaning splattered drool from the walls and ceiling 🤣

I’ve got one, which is more than enough for me - luckily, she’s never been a counter/table surfer!
