15,000 steps in the house?

Friend just told me she's been doing 15.000 steps a day in the house doing the chores- she lives in a tiny terrace with only one open plan living area downstairs and 2 small bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.

AIBU to think this is bollocks?

Yanbu but why would she lie

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/10/2021 20:01

Today my MIL came round. We did the same amount of pottering around... she did 11000 steps, I did 5000.

sociallydistained · 06/10/2021 20:01

I got 30k plus during lockdown and furlough in the house a few times when I was bored 😳🙈 This included watching whole films whilst walking on the spot though!

Maybe they never sit down?

MoiraRose4 · 06/10/2021 20:01

If she has a Fitbit they notoriously overcount steps. There’s no way she’s doing that many on an accurate counter.

picklemewalnuts · 06/10/2021 20:02

You'd have to walk around for about three hours I think. As in, it's only 2 hours walking solid outside, but indoors there would be stopping and starting, so longer.

cravingmilkshake · 06/10/2021 20:02

Why do you care enough to post on an online forum !?

Wishimaywishimight · 06/10/2021 20:02

Totally impossible i would think. I wfh and, on the days i don't go outside, i doubt i do more than a few hundred steps.

TheVolturi · 06/10/2021 20:04

If I'm busy up and down cleaning etc I can easily do 10000.

PivotPivotPivottt · 06/10/2021 20:06

I'm a cleaner and I don't manage to get this amount of steps in.

Ozanj · 06/10/2021 20:08

If it’s a fitbit it will count wrist movements as steps. Just washing up or doing the laundry would have me doing 5k steps which was of course bollocks.

Idontlike · 06/10/2021 20:08

I once did 360 steps putting my make up on. It’s just a motion sensor so counts every hand movement.

If she’s done house work, hoovered, changed beds or whatever, then it will be telling her she’s done miles.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 06/10/2021 20:08

I would do 13,000 steps fast walking to work for 40 minutes, walking around the office, walking home again 40 minutes and pop into Aldi on the way. I work up a sweat.

I'm gonna say no.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 06/10/2021 20:11

Oh and my phone was in my pocket so couldn't track arm and wrist movements. I don't use a fitbit.

DustyMaiden · 06/10/2021 20:11

It is possible. I’ve done it but never stopped walking or dancing even when cooking.

CSJobseeker · 06/10/2021 20:13

It's bollocks.

She's not lying, but the watches people use to measure are notoriously unreliable. 15,000 steps is over 6 miles.

icedcoffees · 06/10/2021 20:16

I'm a dog walker, and I do around 4k steps in an hour. I could do more if I wasn't constantly stopping to pick up poo, throw balls, let them sniff etc.

15k is probably three hours of solid walking.

Ozanj · 06/10/2021 20:16

Unless you do 6-10k steps in one go at least once it really doesn’t count as exercise & shouldn’t be classed as a fitness achievement.

Artichokepiglet · 06/10/2021 20:18

I would imagine it's because the step counter she's using is counting other things that cause wrist movement (like dusting, washing up etc.) as steps. I wear mine all the time and have done 15,000+ (apparently) on some days when I've stayed at home but been doing DIY.

CaptainPovey · 06/10/2021 20:19

Actually its not. I went a bit nuts during lockdown last year

I had an old phone (not a fitbit I can assure you) and put on a pair of shorts every day and stuck it in my back pocket, so not reliant on wrist movement

I spent hours marching on the spot - set myself a target of 20250 steps a day, even though I work from home.

Crazy

Tiredmama21 · 06/10/2021 20:19

I do this many without leaving the house chasing an 11 month around all day Grin so much more energy after a full day at work..

TakeYourFinalPosition · 06/10/2021 20:20

I do 10k in a one bed flat, it takes an effort and I have to walk around on purpose but I do it… I can’t see why she couldn’t, if she wanted to.

WhatIsThisPlease · 06/10/2021 20:21

My Apple Watch said I'd done 35 steps this morning before I'd even got out of bed.

CaptainPovey · 06/10/2021 20:22

I started as soon as I got up, marched when on conference calls, when cooking dinner in the evening.

I got very grumpy if my husband came into the kitchen in the evening when I was marching and 'caught' me doing these steps

FellInLoveWithABanana · 06/10/2021 20:25

Depends how big her steps are

Dimsummummy · 06/10/2021 20:26

I’ve just moved house (bigger than the one you describe tbf) and am doing 16,000 steps a day in the house, tbf this is because I’m still unpacking, reorganising, putting curtains up, rebuilding cupboards etc so am on my feet 12+ hours a day solidly, definitely possible though. Also I do have a fit it but wear it on my non dominant hand so don’t get steps for single handed motions.
I’m also a cleaner and do this many + on a days work, but only when including walking to/between jobs which can easy be 4 miles alone a day, so don’t think it’s usual to potter/clean that many steps away. Think it only happens when there’s something meatier than the day to day to get your teeth into! The only day I’ve got close at work has been when doing some one off student let’s (3500 calories burned in 7 hours!)
