15,000 steps in the house?

Friend just told me she's been doing 15.000 steps a day in the house doing the chores- she lives in a tiny terrace with only one open plan living area downstairs and 2 small bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.

AIBU to think this is bollocks?

I clock that easily in my small flat indoors. But I purposefully do lots of exercise so it's not just doing chores the flat is a tip

I've been counting calories in and out on the app and it's worked for me for over 12 months. I also tried measuring against DH's garmin, my phone, and a step counter attachment thing once and the counts were all pretty close. So I believe the estimates it comes up with, for me at least.

buttermutt · 06/10/2021 20:28

Well mine counts steps in my sleep so...

Daisychainsandglitter · 06/10/2021 20:29

I don't believe her. I walk an average of 15,000 steps a day and at the moment I'm still working from home. I would say it's an effort to get them in to be honest. I have to really make the effort to go out for a walk.
I never manage to do that many around the house. I do wear my Fitbit on my non dominant hand.

buttermutt · 06/10/2021 20:31

I've recalibrated my fitbit to dominate hand but wear it on my less dominat hand & it still over counts but vastly reduced.

I keep wondering about claims like this too. Mine is a cheap one but pretty accurate when I count and check. Records very little round the house.
I have spent the day with a three year old and just been out for a 40 minute walk….I’m only at just over 5,000.
I normally do 10,000 but it requires a least an hour’s walk at decent pace plus a couple of smaller walks

TangledUp789 · 06/10/2021 20:42

Of course it’s bollocks. 15,000 steps is the equivalent of two hours non-stop brisk walking. It’s a distance of around seven miles.

And no fitness tracker would over count that much (unless it’s broken or it’s some rubbish she got from a market).

Hardbackwriter · 06/10/2021 20:44

I like my Fitbit for lots of things but the step count is rubbish. Apparently I did more steps while driving to my PIL's house this afternoon and then sitting there drinking tea while they played with the baby than I did on the 5k run I did this morning...

buttermutt · 06/10/2021 20:44

@Calmdown14 I can go for a long park trip with one dc & have hardly taken any steps as I'm standing around so much. It takes me about 40 mins to walk 5000.

BoredZelda · 06/10/2021 20:46

I usually struggle to get 2000 in a day if I’m at home. But, I was at my mums a few weeks ago and despite not getting there until after lunch, having spent 3 hours in the car, I had racked up 8000 steps by tea time. I just didn’t sit down. Their house is about the same size as ours.

iwannabelikeyouhoohoo · 06/10/2021 20:49

@Ozanj

Unless you do 6-10k steps in one go at least once it really doesn’t count as exercise & shouldn’t be classed as a fitness achievement.
I’ve never heard this. Is this your opinion or a recommendation?
KarlUrbansWife · 06/10/2021 21:06

Definitely possible. My DH regularly does 15k steps when WFH. The pacing up and down is absolutely infuriating!

PaperMonster · 06/10/2021 21:07

I usually do 4-5 miles during two hours of cleaning a house.

WitchityGrubby · 06/10/2021 21:13

My children have identical step counters... Except one of them counts about 4k steps more than the other every day, even when the same child is wearing both watches. Take it all with a pinch of salt.

Singlebutmarried · 06/10/2021 21:14

Hmmmm. Hi can get 2k steps in before leaving the house just doing the washing/making lunches and generally getting ready for work.

That’s in the 90mins I’m at home before leaving for work.

So I could easily do 10k pottering. Loads more with walking the dogs and walking to work.

Gemma2019 · 06/10/2021 21:14

If she has a Fitbit they aren't very accurate. I sorted out the wardrobes at the weekend, putting away washing, hanging clothes and moving clothes around, and my Fitbit thought I had done 20 minutes of swimming.

BananaPB · 06/10/2021 21:23

Does she have a garden? I can rack of loads gardening

Spuriously17windows · 06/10/2021 21:40

I usually walk/run 15k steps each evening, my phone tells me that’s about 12km. It takes a while and I cannot imagine doing it in my house without going absolutely mad

Hardbackwriter · 06/10/2021 21:41

I'm sure you move your hands 2000 times, but I'm less convinced that you're genuinely walking a mile in 90 minutes of doing small household tasks.

RoseMartha · 06/10/2021 22:08

That seems excessive. I am in a flat. I can manage 10k but will have to do a workout or jog on the spot or a bit of dancing round the lounge.

How? It doesn't make sense

ragged · 06/10/2021 22:10

My Fitbit calc's about 5000 steps / hour when I'm walking briskly most of the time. I couldn't get 15k just being at home -- even if very busy.

XenoBitch · 06/10/2021 22:12

Nah, I don't buy that at all.

CaveMum · 06/10/2021 22:14

Doubt it very much. I’ve done 17,000 steps today. That has included a 3.5 mile run, the school run, day at work in an office with a brief walk at lunchtime to get lunch and general pottering about doing dinner/putting kids to bed this evening.

teahelpseverything · 06/10/2021 22:17

I can get that in the house (using my phone steps tracker rather than a watch/fitbit) but usually only when I purposely walk while on telephone calls etc. For example I'm currently MNing while walking circles around the kitchen as my steps today are on the low side.

I suspect she has a tracker that takes into account hand movements rather than proper steps - if I could get that many steps doing chores instead of walking around chatting on the phone I'm sure my house would be so much tidier 🤣

Indoctro · 06/10/2021 22:39

My room at work is tiny ,I'm busy moving about a lot in and hit 10,000 in 3 hours at work

At home if I go on a cleaning rampage I can easily do 20,000 steps

I completely believe her.
