15,000 steps in the house?

Friend just told me she's been doing 15.000 steps a day in the house doing the chores- she lives in a tiny terrace with only one open plan living area downstairs and 2 small bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.

AIBU to think this is bollocks?

I went for a 35-40 minute walk today and have walked around the house for about another hour and a half and have done just under 11k.

TwoleftUggs · 06/10/2021 22:46

I’m doing a virtual walking challenge as part of a fb group. Most people log a few miles a day at most. One woman claims to be walking 35 miles a day, just doing normal stuff around the house. I can’t comprehend it, she’s top of the leaderboard by miles- there’s no way she’s doing that. The only person she’s cheating there is herself though.

juneybean · 06/10/2021 22:51

Is she part of team RH, they get them marching on the spot in the house to get to 15k every day.

RosiePosieDozy · 06/10/2021 22:57

It's definitely possible. I think she's probably exaggerating but she might not be. Cleaning all day could definitely get your steps above 10k.

Yogsgirl · 07/10/2021 07:02

Wouldn't it be more accurate to wear a device on the ankle rather than the wrist to measure steps?

Whether on not fitbit is accurate- I can't imagine how she finds things to clean all day every day- she rarely leaves the house and she's definitely not a gardener!!

I easily hit 10,000 a day in the house, Apple Watch. Was surprised and watched how they went up and can safely say yes it is true. Tried it on a Fitbit and the same.

IsabellesMissingSock · 07/10/2021 10:37

I have an Apple Watch and I think the step count is to be taken with a giant pinch of salt, as other posters have said.

I wfh and generally do about 6k during the day if I'm in all day, and that's including some serious pacing around on calls. 15k sounds unlikely to me.

Mouk · 07/10/2021 14:13

I find it hard to believe. Unless she's living in a mansion.

ememem84 · 07/10/2021 14:22

@buttermutt

Hmmmm. Hi can get 2k steps in before leaving the house just doing the washing/making lunches and generally getting ready for work.

That’s in the 90mins I’m at home before leaving for work.

How? It doesn't make sense

im the same. can easily get that many of a morning before leaving for work.

i'm usually up at 530, doing a few chores pottering around, laundry emptying dishwasher etc. then getting the kiddos ready for nursery.

then the walk from car park to nursery to work is a mother 2500 steps. ish. depending on which way i walk. so i'm at just about 4500 before 9am.

when we were working from home full time, i stood up to work one day and walked on the spot. and paced about while listening to lectures etc. easy 14000 steps.

i reckon if i got a treadmill desk i'd be killing it with steps.

Isababybel · 07/10/2021 14:26

I think its probably untrue if just pottering doing chores.

Chakraleaf · 07/10/2021 14:35

I March and jog on spot. I average 15,000 a day

Chakraleaf · 07/10/2021 14:36

2000 steps from nursery car park to the nursery? A mile between the car park and nursery?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/10/2021 14:42

I do 650 steps to and from school to drop off and similar to pick up... (from house to classroom!)

1000 steps is around 10minutes at a reasonable pace outdoors ime.

Crayfishforyou · 07/10/2021 14:44

Tosh.
My MIL said the same thing. DH bought her a Fitbit for her birthday. She averages at about 5k a day. She is adamant that it is wrong.

GivenUpEntirely · 07/10/2021 16:17

I've worn a proper pedometer alongside my fitness tracker and they match up within 50 steps or so across the day so reasonably happy with the accuracy of the fitness tracker that I wear all day every day.

15,000 steps daily for me is a 4k run then 4k walking (to/from school) along with general pootling around the house. For me to hit the same level just at home I'd expect to be cleaning non-stop for a few hours, which if I was a SAHP or tidier might be possible but doesn't sound likely for a daily achievement.

Even the other morning when I had to work away and spent the two hours before leaving non-stop sorting stuff out (moving room to room) I only clocked up 4000 steps. I do have a very small stride thanks to my hobbit length legs so expect that my version of steps would be rather higher than someone who's 6ft doing the same distance.

BoredZelda · 07/10/2021 21:45

I'm sure you move your hands 2000 times

I’m sure it depends on your tracker. Mine buzzes me to let me know how many steps I need to do every hour. I count as I am stepping and it’s pretty accurate. I spent an hour ironing. According to you that would rack up the steps. It didn’t.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/10/2021 22:37

@MoiraRose4

If she has a Fitbit they notoriously overcount steps. There’s no way she’s doing that many on an accurate counter.
Mine matches the other things I own, plus the places I go to where the distance is known (including a 5k).

It is possible, as I get about 5000 in by about 10.30am just in catching the bus to work and assorted trips to and from the work kitchen, photocopier and round the site - I'm certainly not on my feet all day, I spent time at my desk, but I am active from 6am until 6pm even without doing any exercise.

Cormoran · 07/10/2021 22:42

My DH did 11.000 steps during a very heated phone call he had with his brother. He was sitting but gesticulated quite a bit.

Glitterblue · 07/10/2021 22:42

I average 16,000 a day from a combination of walking my daughter to and from school (1.5 miles each way) and housework.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/10/2021 22:46

I have a dog that I walk twice a day and sometimes I still struggle to get over 10k steps.

Whataboutme21 · 07/10/2021 22:55

It is possible, I used to do this sometimes when I was with team rh - I’d be constantly doing steps, when watching tv, ironing, making dinner - used to get on everyone’s nerves Grin

SylviaTrench · 07/10/2021 23:13

Is she knitting?

I do YouTube walking workouts, yesterday I did a 15 minute one immediately followed by a 19 minute one, combined it was about 4.5k steps.

puddlebubble · 09/10/2021 13:41

tried my old pedometer yesterday (around the neck) registered the same over 10,000 steps. So I have 3 devices giving same readings. Totally possible OP.
