To know anyone irl with munchausens?

Watching the gypsy rose doc, I'd never heard of munchausens disease before and can't even think I'd know anyone with it in real life

Has anyone actually had an RL encounter with someone with this?

I’m a mother of a child with a terminal
disease. I don’t revel in it, I certainly don’t make his life harder to garner sympathy, I don’t purposely take him to A&E & lie to get him on to the wards. So maybe stop twisting my words. Everyone else has voiced their opinion but funnily enough it’s just mine you’ve picked up on. When have I said that all parents have FII? I haven’t have I. You’re just implying I have. Im
speaking on someone I know personally enough to know when it’s genuine & when it’s fake, just like everyone else on this thread. So stop looking for arguments. Just plain odd.

I’m not looking for an argument I’m just trying to point out that under stress people cope in very different ways. What you perceive as ‘revelling in it’ or being happy to be in hospital or attending a and e for no reason there could be behind closed doors a parent in pieces , over anxious so going to a and e for that reason not for attention, seeming happy but actually desperately trying to put on a brave face for her child and for herself.

I might be right and you might be wrong or vice versa. Can you imagine the devastation though if an accusation of this caused removal of a terminally ill child ? Just because a parent doesn’t present in a way everyone expects them to when under stress

I’m no expert in FII but I’m pretty sure I can tell the difference between a parent who puts on a brave face or just deals with their child’s illness differently compared to a parent who takes enjoyment of the attention they get when their child is poorly. But since you seem to be the expert here so I’m sure you know. There’s no accusation, everyone who knows this person has said the same. But like I said, you seem to know more 😂So crack on with your educated self & as for the parents who have been accused of having FII I feel sorry for them. As for the parents who do have FII I don’t feel sorry for them. But this OP wasn’t about parents who have been falsely accused is it. This was about people who DO have it.

I don’t claim to be an expert I just can see things from both sides. Obviously you are seeing this is real life and I’m not so your judgement is based on that . I’m just offering an alternative perspective because if someone gets this wrong it could devastate a family and destroy a child’s life who needs their parents.

As you say, professionals have this on their radar and they will be best placed to assess the parents and their intentions. I just want people to be aware how rare FII is and how it’s more likely a false accusation will destroy a family than for it to be a genuine case of child abuse.

FII/munchausens can’t be discussed without mentioning the high percentage of those falsely accused because it’s an absolute scandal. Nearly always parents of children with a genuine diagnosed illness, often mothers with ASD and as they don’t act how society thinks they should act under the pressure of having an unwell child immediately that is a red flag.

Exactly, I’m seeing it in real life. You’re not. So I’m certain I know this person more than you do. & just because I didn’t mention how it could be from a different perspective doesn’t mean I’m not aware of it.

The OP wasn’t about FII from a different perspective. It was did anyone know anyone with it IRL. Hence why the majority of people on here have shared their experiences they’ve had or witnessed with people who have or potentially have FII.

Now if this post was about people falsely accused of having FII I wouldn’t have commented because I don’t know anyone accused of having FII. But the post wasn’t about that was it. So on that note have a great day 👌

I know someone whom I suspect has munchausens and also munchausens by proxy. Of course, I can never prove it so I keep my mouth shut, but I do feel for her three children, who all seem to have medical issue after medical issue.

I'd be reporting that to SS. You can do it anonymously.

Hopefully I’ve opened your mind to the possibility of an alternative explanation for this person’s presentation
