Not to let my DD eat cereal?

My 16 month old goes to nursery 5 days a week. We pay for her breakfast, lunch and snack (included in the fee). However, I don’t like the thought of her eating cereal so we provide the breakfast and the snack. I don’t think it’s very healthy, even though it’s a wholewheat type cereal. I give her porridge made of steel cut oats instead with some applesauce. Would you be ok with feeding your kids cereal?

Yes.
Cereals are fine.

shouldistop · 05/10/2021 19:45

What type of cereal? Coco pops no, weetabix yes.

StarfishDish · 05/10/2021 19:46

My 8 month old loves weetabix and has them daily Grin

Porcupineintherough · 05/10/2021 19:46

Depends on the cereal. If it was a low sugar one (so not frosties or cocoa pops) then sure.

SomebodysMum · 05/10/2021 19:46

Not for 5 days a week I wouldn’t, no. Once or twice a week maybe.

Betsyboo87 · 05/10/2021 19:46

What is it you don’t like about cereal? As long as it’s not a sugary one then it’s fine. DS is 15 months and often has cereal like Weetabix.

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 05/10/2021 19:47

Even a lot of the ‘healthy’ ones like cornflakes have added sugar. I would check the ingredients on the ones they provide to see if you are happy with them.

Envoitrevisage · 05/10/2021 19:47

Agree with @shouldistop

If it’s lucky charms then no, if it’s multigrain hoops and weetabix then yes.

Peridotty · 05/10/2021 19:47

Shreddies type stuff,
Sometimes muffins.

Weetabix fine. No sugar in them.

Cocopops with honey on top, no.

Ohpulltheotherone · 05/10/2021 19:47

Well some cereals are healthy, assuming it’s a no added sugar, wholewheat version and not a bucket of cocopops.

I like to give my DCs porridge too and I bet nurseries would like to - considering it’s cheap and filling and a little goes a long way - but it’d be a nightmare considering how hot and messy it can be.
So cereal is a good easy alternative for them.
I don’t see how cereal is any better / worse than a yoghurt or toast. Again, assuming it’s a plain variety and not Frosties or equivalent.

Ultimately it’s up to you though, if you don’t like their options you can fill her up before you send her and request that they only give her fruit or toast as breakfast

WhatHaveIFound · 05/10/2021 19:47

Every nursery i've know have given weetabix or porridge for breakfast so i'd be fine with that. I'd be very surprised if they were offering sugary cereals.

Justanotherquestioner · 05/10/2021 19:47

It's funny. I'm not massively funny about what my kids eat but I also don't like them eating cereal. I prefer them to have something like eggs for breakfast. No clue why

Peridotty · 05/10/2021 19:47

@Betsyboo87 the hidden sugar and salt

buzzandwoodyallday · 05/10/2021 19:48

Let me guess, this is your only child....😀

Is cereal full of sugar? - yes. Can I muster up the enthusiasm to create a fuss about what they feed my children at nursery? - definitely not. As long as they're fed and I haven't had to do it, or clean it up, then happy days. But then I have 2 DS with 12 months age difference (nearly 2 and 3 years old) and I'm just glad of a break when they're at nursery tbh.

icedcoffees · 05/10/2021 19:49

What's wrong with Shreddies?

switswoo81 · 05/10/2021 19:49

I ate shredded wheat and Weetabix when I had gd and they never had any affect on my sugars.

Lazypuppy · 05/10/2021 19:49

😂😂 thanks for the laugh OP

Tal45 · 05/10/2021 19:50

Cereals vary hugely. I generally find the ones that don't have a ton of sugar are disgusting but if my ds wanted weetabix for breakfast I'd be ok with that. Frosties would be a big no. Why do you think it's unhealthy?

Porcupineintherough · 05/10/2021 19:50

Do they have more salt and sugars than a piece of bread?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 05/10/2021 19:50

I'm a terrible parent who gave mine toddler cereals. They're 31, 29, 14 and 10 now and seem fine. 😁

WeepySheepy · 05/10/2021 19:52

@Peridotty

Shreddies type stuff, Sometimes muffins.
As in a cake muffin? Or an "English" muffin?
BeeTweep · 05/10/2021 19:52

As long as it's not daily Frosties or Coco pops I don't see the problem.

redbook · 05/10/2021 19:52

I agree OP. Cereal is not particularly healthy. It's just a filler processed food.

I always hated that nursery/breakfast clubs feed them cereal everyday but have always just gone with it as didn't think I could stop my child eating the same as everyone else. Good on you for providing your own.

Tal45 · 05/10/2021 19:52

Oh ok, shreddies are 13% sugar so no I definitely would be giving a child that. And muffins or any other cake for breakfast would be a no too. Really they should know better, that is just a load of sugary crap to give tiny tots.
