Not to let my DD eat cereal?

My 16 month old goes to nursery 5 days a week. We pay for her breakfast, lunch and snack (included in the fee). However, I don’t like the thought of her eating cereal so we provide the breakfast and the snack. I don’t think it’s very healthy, even though it’s a wholewheat type cereal. I give her porridge made of steel cut oats instead with some applesauce. Would you be ok with feeding your kids cereal?

I am surprised you put applesauce in the porridge. What is the sugar content of that?

@Treacletoots afaik I think the difference might be steel cut oats are coarser than finer ground porridgey oats? (There are also jumbo oats which are completely shit to make flapjacks etc with but are otherwise nice for breakfasts)

Some recipes specify them for sone reason

FangsForTheMemory · 05/10/2021 20:03

The oats your giving her are a cereal.

hellothere007 · 05/10/2021 20:03

And yet, the apple sauce….

TumtumTree · 05/10/2021 20:03

Personally I'm fine with my three DC eating cereal for breakfast. But if you're not happy with it and choose to send her in with an alternative, then that's fine too.

So I'm not sure what to vote. YABU if you think the nursery shouldn't be serving cereal but YANBU to send her in with an alternative if you choose to.

I’m grateful that nursery sort breakfast and I don’t have to worry about it! Getting food into my toddler is such a nightmare , I’m happy with cereal, really much worse things they could have!

brittleheadgirl · 05/10/2021 20:04

@Cosyblankets

Well I'm 50 and I grew up on cereal for breakfast most days and I'm perfectly healthy.
Ds has eaten his own body weight in cornflakes since he was a toddle. He has them for breakfast and supper every single day. He's 6ft2, healthy weight, clear skin and has perfect teeth. There's worse things than cereal!!!
Pebbledashery · 05/10/2021 20:05

If I stopped giving my daughter wwetabix or rice krispies all hell would break loose. There are some low sugar cereals. My daughter has cereal for breakfast at pre school and she's perfectly fine, straight white teeth, healthy weight and height, happy.
However, she's your child and it's your choice.

Fuck! My kids have sugary cereal most days. That's a bit bad isn't it? Saying that they are normally fortified and milks good for them isn't it?

JuneOsborne · 05/10/2021 20:05

Are you in the UK?

brittleheadgirl · 05/10/2021 20:06

@Treacletoots

I don't have an issue with cereal but I am intrigued about steel cut oats. What's the difference between these and regular oats? Wink
I'm guessing nothing? But probably means someone can overcharge the middle classes while laughing all the way to the bank?

Happy to be corrected!

Dutchesss · 05/10/2021 20:06

Teehee

I laughed way more than I should have at but butters. Sometimes I love that there's no edit button. 😁

Cereal isn't really any less healthy than the applesauce!

There's no such thing as a bad good generally just an overall bad or good diet

Your choice at the end of the day but I've witnessed the results of parenting overly strictly re food and it's no more healthy (mentally) an approach than those parents who constantly feed "junk" food excessively so

Both extremes are bad ideas

NoYOUbekind · 05/10/2021 20:08

Oats are a cereal.

Applesauce is a sugar.

But butters are definitely banned at nursery.

Skyla2005 · 05/10/2021 20:08

This post is screaming first child !

Graphista · 05/10/2021 20:08

No such thing as a bad FOOD that should say

FluffyBooBoo · 05/10/2021 20:09

So instead of the nursery feeding her cereal, you are sending her in with oats... which are a type of cereal Confused

Shreddies are 96% wholegrain. There's probably morev sugar in the apple ..

Peridotty · 05/10/2021 20:09

I don’t have anything against cereal for myself. I ate loads of cereal growing up- sugary and not so sugary. I’m a healthy person.
I don’t want to feed processed foods to her (food from a box) for as long as possible. The applesauce is used to cool the porridge down. I thought it wouldn’t be as unhealthy as white sugar as it’s just puréed apple.
To a PP the muffins are probably blueberry muffins?? I’m not too sure.
I’m just trying not to give her foods that come out of a box or a packet.

whatfreshheck · 05/10/2021 20:09

Applesauce is pure sugar! Let the kid have shreddies, it's not going to hurt.

SylvanasWindrunner · 05/10/2021 20:10

What are your porridge oats contained in when you buy them? Grin

Peridotty · 05/10/2021 20:10

@Treacletoots they are the unflattened version of oats! So they are like little grains. And it’s a bit more textured.
