Not to let my DD eat cereal?

My 16 month old goes to nursery 5 days a week. We pay for her breakfast, lunch and snack (included in the fee). However, I don’t like the thought of her eating cereal so we provide the breakfast and the snack. I don’t think it’s very healthy, even though it’s a wholewheat type cereal. I give her porridge made of steel cut oats instead with some applesauce. Would you be ok with feeding your kids cereal?

My DCs had cereal most days. As PPs have said, not the coco pops/ frostie types, the healthier weetabix, shreddies, porridge type.
They are ridiculously healthy, slim young adults now.
I think you are BU - applesauce contains sugar too and even though it is 'natural', they are still sugars.

Peridotty · 05/10/2021 20:11

@SylvanasWindrunner I buy them as a bulk organic oats from Wholefoods so they come out of a bin.

Ohhhh. Sounds rather nice. I think I'll try those..

@Peridotty

I don’t have anything against cereal for myself. I ate loads of cereal growing up- sugary and not so sugary. I’m a healthy person. I don’t want to feed processed foods to her (food from a box) for as long as possible. The applesauce is used to cool the porridge down. I thought it wouldn’t be as unhealthy as white sugar as it’s just puréed apple. To a PP the muffins are probably blueberry muffins?? I’m not too sure. I’m just trying not to give her foods that come out of a box or a packet.
Don’t you just add a bit of cold milk to cool it down?

What do you think they were transported to whole foods in?

I bet they cost a lot as well....

maddiemookins16mum · 05/10/2021 20:14

DD ate cereal every day for over a decade. Sometimes (high days and holidays), she’d have Frosties or something full of sugar. She’s 17, has perfect teeth and is 8 stone.
It’s cereal not Cocaine.

Peridotty · 05/10/2021 20:15

@Twizbe but they are a single ingredient food. When I say a packet or a box I meant processed food.

Do the oats have to be steel cut ?

Why not use a milk 'ice cube' or just cold milk to cool the porridge down if that's genuinely the only reason you add such sweet, sugary stuff to your daughter's steel-cut oats? Don't the steel-cut oats come in a packet? Or do you hand pick them and place them into a silk purse?
ilovesooty · 05/10/2021 20:15

@Cosyblankets

Well I'm 50 and I grew up on cereal for breakfast most days and I'm perfectly healthy.
I used to be given rice krispies or cornflakes with a teaspoon of sugar on top. Mind you, there wasn't fast food and there weren't loads of ready meals in those days either. Surely it's the overall diet that matters?
Patapouf · 05/10/2021 20:16

Shreddies is better than apple sauce

DoNotGetADog · 05/10/2021 20:16

@JuneOsborne

Are you in the UK?
I’m guessing not as apple sauce is two separate words in the UK… and full of sugar
Peridotty · 05/10/2021 20:16

@DameMaureen
No it doesn’t have to be steel cut oats. I don’t like them myself but my husband found that DD likes the texture. She doesn’t like the regular oats as much.

@DoNotGetADog I’m in the US.

@Waspsarearseholes using milk is a good idea.

so you are feeding her cake for breakfast? how is that better?

Peridotty · 05/10/2021 20:18

@HouseOfFire I am not feeding her muffins. The nursery has a few items for breakfast. Sometimes cereal and sometimes muffins.

My daughter ears cereal most days! She loves bitesize shredded wheat and shreddies. They're quick, easy, filling and work well within a budget.

But if you don't want to that's fine, but I'd go with cold milk to cool the porridge down rather than applesauce if you're worried about hidden sugars.

Ah ok, so some of this is making a bit more sense now. The food standards in the US are quite different to the UK. Can you get weetabix in the US?

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 05/10/2021 20:20

I couldn't be bothered getting worked up over this. DD, 21 months, has cereal and toast for breakfast at nursery, the rest of her meals are perfectly healthy, plenty of meat, veg, fruit etc

Lovemusic33 · 05/10/2021 20:21

WTF is steel cut oats? 😬😬😬

My kids have cereal or toast, usually weetabix. They are 15 and 17 now and are still alive 😬😬😬

Harrysmummy246 · 05/10/2021 20:21

@redbook

I agree OP. Cereal is not particularly healthy. It's just a filler processed food.

I always hated that nursery/breakfast clubs feed them cereal everyday but have always just gone with it as didn't think I could stop my child eating the same as everyone else. Good on you for providing your own.

Hmmm, yes because oats are in no way processed.....................
SylvanasWindrunner · 05/10/2021 20:22

Given US food standards, it might not be that unreasonable actually!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 05/10/2021 20:22

Oh. The USA? I've changed my mind. The cereal there is insanely high in sugar!

shouldistop · 05/10/2021 20:24

God, everything is so sweet in the US. I couldn't even get normal bread when I've visited, it's always been loaded with sugar.
