to think what Boris Johnson has said today is unacceptable?

first he has said (I'm guessing as a sop to commercial landlords complaining about properties being abandoned by businesses) that everyone needs to go back to work because they will be gossiped about:

"You have got to be able to come in, you have got to know what everyone else is talking about – otherwise you are going to be gossiped about and you are going to lose out"

Really? Firstly so what? and secondly, it's basically condoning bullying as a reason to get back to work.

Then he has said

'It's not the job of government to come in and try and fix every problem in business and industry."

Boris says it is 'not my job to fix all of the UK's problems': PM’s astonishing claim as he denies nation is in 'crisis' and DISMISSES inflation spike fears, fuel shortages and empty supermarket shelves as 'just part of his new approach'

@AttaGirrrrl

I’m no Boris fan, but I can’t see an issue with either of those. Yes, most people should be back at work now. No, the government can’t solve all issues. What’s wrong with that?
Why?

If people have a better work balance by WFH why should they go back to the office.

A caring workforce would open its doors, those that prefer the office work in the office, those that don't continue at home.

If people want to gossip, let them .

julieca · 05/10/2021 20:15

I'm no Boris fan always seems to be the opening phrase in a post that agrees with everything Boris Johnson says.
Do you think we are stupid?

antoniawhite · 05/10/2021 20:31

Someone posted this a while ago and it has some truth, I think, though I’m sure there are exceptions:

I’m no Boris fan, but = I voted Tory
I voted Remain but = I voted Leave
I’m not a racist, but = I totally am a racist

I'm personally more offended by the "Only 127 European drivers applied for our short term visas claim because there is a multinational shortage of HGV drivers so it's not just a Uk shortage problem" claim -- rather than "actually our offer was crap!" truth.

I mean, how stupid does BJ think I am if he thinks I'll fall for that BS? Tories pretending that Brexit disincentives and the visa terms weren't very unappealing.

Fine print of my employer's hybrid-working policy says that employees should still come into office 1-3days/week. I don't want to bore with details, but basically, how are they going to weekly transport all the work equipment back and forth? Nearest free parking is one mile from our offices. Hohum. Hybrid is worst of both worlds.
HappydaysArehere · 05/10/2021 20:43

Just in permanent despair at what he gets away with. Saw him being interviewed on Channel 4 news. He appeared to have a lot to say about long term plans but nothing about the immediate problems. Typical Boris avoiding problems as he is not up to solving anything that requires extended focus so avoidance is his strategy.

julieca · 05/10/2021 20:52

@lijiik that sounds like a crap employer. We have laptops for home working and PCs for the office. Everything is supposed to be saved by staff onto a server so you can access stuff anywhere.

Yes! Well done to whoever cracked that code. Why can't people be honest / own their decisions?

HannibalHayeski · 05/10/2021 20:55

The government is not responsible for healthcare, police standards, trade policy, supply chain efficiency or inflation.

What IS the point of government then?

I can’t stand him.

But people probably do need to get back to work.

Because on mumsnet anyone that defends the Tories or says they voted for them gets piled on.

julieca, it's not just the laptops or duplicate desktop PCs (& monitors?)

What about desk chairs, footstools, headphones with microphone, webcam, laptop chargers, dock stations, monitors, keyboards, mice, bags to transport laptop in -- will this stuff be all duplicated in multiple locations or how much has to be lugged back & forth? Who knows.

I wanted to go into office this week but... the only headphones I have at office have a broken mic. I would need to remember the good headphones if anyone wants to suddenly TEAMS me. Shared office, officemates don't really want to share my call (not sure the desk set up has speakers, anyway).

Simple thing... speakers, headphones & mic.

I have a dedicated laptop for partner organisation but no laptop bag to transport it. What if someone asks me to look at data held by partner organisation? Do I transport laptop in a dodgy bag just in case? What if I forget its charger? If I cycle & fall & bash the laptop -- is it insured? Who TF knows. NO Budget to buy an accessory like a laptop bag. A conventional laptop bag is too big to fit in my cycle pannier, anyway. Pfffft.

Particularly as this Government prorogued parliament in Sept19 to prevent Parliament from carrying out its normal duties e.g. legislation, debate and scrutiny, so it seems they don't even like to be responsible for the fundamental aspects of their job!
antoniawhite · 05/10/2021 21:07

Well, Corbynistas, Starmer-supporters and Lib Dems have a pretty rough time too. People just get held to account for what they support.

DerAlteMann · 05/10/2021 21:08

Sorry, OP you're looking for issues that aren't there.

We had an assessment over zooms of our work stations at home and anything needed was provided. I had a chair and a signal booster delivered. I don't need to take my laptop into the office. Everything is on the server and I can access that using the PC in the office.

"webcam, laptop chargers, dock stations, monitors, keyboards, mice, bags to transport laptop in"

Webcams built in to laptop and PC, laptop chargers at home, everything else at both locations. This isn't hard you know.

We are a small company, this has all been cheap to set up, it just took some working through and commitment.
And yes my laptop is insured.

Sorry I don't mean to be negative but you sound like a few people I have worked with over the years that sees any change as a problem that stops anything happening, rather than a problem with fairly simple solutions.
And the reduction in office rent is more than buying a bit of office equipment. We can be in the office if we want, but most people don't want to, so office space has been reduced.

People have been at work all the fucking way through Hmm
julieca · 05/10/2021 21:19

Yeah somehow all those self-employed people and consultants who had a home office were never really working it seems. It only counts if you do it in an office and buy a costa coffee and pret sandwich.

Indeed. Particularly as yet another financial scandal has just broken, while his government tells us plebs to get back to our low wage jobs.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58792393

What is the job of government now? We’re well on the way to rebuilding a corrupt empire for the incredibly rich.

@Andante57 But there must be so many clandestine Tory posters - it's not a dirty secret - it's not as if Tories are a minority group!?

Posters if you are a Tory and believe what they are doing or saying is right then have the courage of your convictions & stand up for what you believe in. Of course there will be debate as plenty of people disagree with how they go about running the country. That is how democracy works. Pretending you didn't vote Tory is just weird.

Eleganz · 05/10/2021 21:25

@Sinthie

I can’t stand him.

But people probably do need to get back to work.

I've worked so much over the past year that I have more holiday than I've ever had.

People have been at work. The 21st century allows that to happen regardless of location for "office" work.

Divide and conquer classic tactic. The Tory donors need their rents.

Eleganz · 05/10/2021 21:26

That should be more holiday entitlement of course.

Eleganz · 05/10/2021 21:27

Crypto-Tories are everywhere, I mean they must be.
