I didn't buy my dd anythibg for her first xmas, no point in my eyes. The rest of the family bought her stuff, and we bought toys at various points in the first year as she was growing

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/10/2021 11:49

Books
Keepsake items like a nice stocking, nativity set, 1st Christmas bauble
Practical items like clothes
Toys for the next stage (like a ball pool or pop up tunnel or building blocks or push along walker)

Cazzovuoi · 05/10/2021 11:49

Nothing! Cute Christmas onesie for photos but don’t waste your money on gifts.

TamponSupport · 05/10/2021 11:50

A silly outfit
A special tree decoration
IKEA used to do a rocking reindeer
A box with a wrapped box inside with a wrapped box inside...!

Wnikat · 05/10/2021 11:50

Nothing, they won't have a clue what's happening.

charlestonchaplin · 05/10/2021 11:55

Nothing! Except perhaps a nice cardboard box. Save your money for later when the presents will make an impact.

JumperandJacket · 05/10/2021 11:56

If your baby- very little.
If someone else's baby- something that will actually be useful, like clothes.

PutOnAHappyFace · 05/10/2021 12:00

DD with be 7 months, she'll be getting the bits and pieces we would of got her at that age anyway. She's our 4th so it would seem weird to not have anything under the tree for her.

PutOnAHappyFace · 05/10/2021 12:02

I didn't even properly answer your question.DD will get a little ball pool, some books etc. Some things might be too little but she's grow into them.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 05/10/2021 12:03

The toys that had the most longevity for DDs were often the cheaper ones. 8 month old would like all of the below and most would see them through to school age.

  • Stacking rings
-Stacking cups -Bath toys -Toy phone

DD1 also loved her wooden post box with wooden letters from that age. It momentarily distracted her from trying to post things into the DVD player, down the radiators or taking the Sky viewing card out and and posting it under the rug.

Following with interest! Everyone saying nothing - great in theory, not so good when there's an older kid who's going to wonder why their baby sibling hasn't got any presents. Also family will ask for ideas.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 05/10/2021 12:05

Multipack of Next pyjamas age 12-18. They were DS's most useful gift for his 1st Christmas!

maofteens · 05/10/2021 12:07

Just a few bits - a toy, some clothes maybe, a book. We got a few presents from family members so didn't buy much at all. There will plenty of years to indulge in presents!

JumperandJacket · 05/10/2021 12:08

If you do want to get a toy, I'd suggest Tomy hide and squeak eggs. Doesn't look like much but always a huge hit with the under ones.

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 05/10/2021 12:08

Do people really not buy their babies presents? I find that odd I don’t know anyone irl that wouldn’t and not everyone has a big family who will be buying instead.

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 05/10/2021 12:11

I would probably go with a ride on that will grow with them so they can play when they get a bit older, there are ones you can by that they can push along when they are little then turns into a car

TheSpiral · 05/10/2021 12:12

That's the age DS2 was his first Christmas so am trying to remember what he had, from us and others. Stocking was weaning things - bibs, bowls, etc - a soft car that you pulled back and it went speeding off, That's Not My Snowman book, can't remember what else. He was crawling like anything so his main present was a tunnel that he could crawl through.

shouldistop · 05/10/2021 12:13

Is it your 8month old?

If yours then just buy something you were going to buy anyway (they always need something!) and wrap it up.

If someone else's child then ask their parent or put money in a card.

We said in advance that Santa doesn’t get much for babies as they don’t really need anything, we let the older sibling give one gift idea ‘for Santa’ to bring baby. Then we just got a few nice books, clothes, hat and a couple of toys. A new sippee cup, bubble bath.

Premium bonds

Sofiegiraffe · 05/10/2021 12:23

Yes my baby. Thanks some lovely ideas on here! I can't believe some people are saying nothing. really?!

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 05/10/2021 12:24

Yeh they won't know or care but I would get a token gift like a baby book you can do together. Maybe a new set of pyjamas. That would be it!

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 05/10/2021 12:25

Premium bonds is actually a good idea

Because we are all overwhelmed by toys and bits of plastic that we are running out of space for and don’t even get played with at that age. Forever in a cycle of being given more stuff and getting rid of the old stuff. Trying to find parts of stacking cups and shape sorters lost under the sofa etc etc 🤣

Exactly, so you don't get nothing, which is what the post you quoted was talking about. No token or practical presents.
