Usborne's Baby's Very First Noisy Christmas Book was a huge hit with our 9m old DD (second one on this link https://www.amazon.co.uk/Babys-First-Touchy-feely-Christmas-Collection/dp/9123906456/ref=mpssa111?dchild=1&keywords=usborne+baby+first+noisy+christmas+book&qid=1633447619&sr=8-1)

I bought nothing for first year...they don't know and tbh family bought enough

SleepingStandingUp · 05/10/2021 17:17

Unless it's about affording it, I do think it's sad so many people wouldn't buy their babies a present because "well someone else will and they won't know".
What age do you do that to? What age do they even understand who's brought what

Sofiegiraffe · 05/10/2021 17:40

@Ajl46

Love these - thank you!

Dd was born a week before Christmas Day so I got her:
The night before Christmas book
Christmas onesie for Christmas Day
A beautiful wedgewood tree ornament
A Jellycat elf

I bought friend's baby a painted plate to Father Christmas love from xxxx but can't remember where from. She leaves her mince pies and carrot out on Christmas eve...child is 8 and it gets used every year! Lovely but useful keepsake

badg3r · 05/10/2021 17:59

Our third got lots of nappies for her first Christmas. Older siblings thought it was great!

My youngest was a similar age for his first birthday and I got him a minor number of toys - why not? It was for me as much as for him which is perfectly valid IMO.

He got a little drum with drumsticks and I got all associated photos Brew

We bought our daughter a tonie box last Christmas, she is 15 months now and absolutely loves it. She can operate it herself and pick which music she wants independently.

We also have building her library, we made a good dent in the cloth bound puffin classics last year.

elbea · 05/10/2021 18:55

Also a musician relative also bought our daughter a Hape Baby Grand Piano. We thought it was a truly mad gift but she actually loves it, at six months she just hit the keys but now she is much more delicate pressing keys individually.

yikesanotherbooboo · 05/10/2021 18:58

If you have other dc buy them a cuddly toy but otherwise either nothing or something you would have bought anyway.

StarfishDish · 05/10/2021 19:02

@Sofiegiraffe My DD will be 10 months and will be getting the toys she has now wrapped up. Shes obsessed with paper and has far too many toys already.

@SleepingStandingUp But why waste money when they have so much already? They're not bothered by the toys and are more bothered by the wrapping.
lavenderlemon · 05/10/2021 19:08

My dd will be 8mo too.
I'm planning to get her some little wooden instruments I think. And one of those pop up tunnels.
Mainly because I also have a nearly 5 year old so she would be sad if Father Christmas doesn't bring anything for her baby sister!
Don't go overboard though.
My eldest was one the week before Christmas and I remember her being so overwhelmed with the amount of stuff family brought etc. And we had to open everything, she couldn't have cared less!!

Jiggyjigsaw · 05/10/2021 19:13

I gave my daughter nothing for her first, a 4 mo ths she was too young to understand. Even her second Christmas she didn't really get it.

Iwantitthatway · 05/10/2021 19:15

Stacking cups! My son was teething super badly so I got a set of silicone stacking cups that he loves to chew on as well! 😂 fine motor were my sons favourite toys at this age, I got him a post box toy with letters to post, stacking cups and blocks!

Oliveandsage · 05/10/2021 19:27

My daughter is 9 months at Christmas, I’ve just wrapped some of her sisters old baby toys that she hasn’t seen yet 😂

Sofiegiraffe · 05/10/2021 19:33

@StarfishDish
I don't see it as a waste of money as it's new toys that are appropriate for her developmental stage. I've been buying her new stuff every few months anyway to stimulate her development so I definitely wouldn't want to wrap what she already has.

For my second I’d put away various baby toys from older sibling that he had forgotten about and I wrapped those up. Might have bought a toy or two from a charity shop too.

I presume you wrapped it in the foil you’d already used to cover your nut roast? Waste not want not and all that.

The competitive, eco, clean, green mean parenting on here always makes me laugh. 😂

And for the ‘nothing’ brigade, we know a baby (even one that’s a year old) doesn’t have one iota of a scooby what’s going on, but we do, and giving our babies a present for their first Christmas is hardly a heinous act of waste or cruelty, it’s fun for us and includes them in an exciting time of year.

Personalised 1st year baby decoration they will love it when they are older

Yes! Exactly this. Why would you leave your baby out of a family Christmas, regardless of whether they know what's going on? I can't get my head around that at all. Confused
