If care workers get fired for being unvaccinated…

Why not professional footballers? I’m struggling to be sympathetic with these spoilt men who want to keep getting massive salaries but feel that public health protection measures needn’t apply to them. AIBU?

Are footballers any less vaccinated than others in their age group?

bumbleymummy · 04/10/2021 17:54

How about nobody loses their job for deciding not to have the vaccine?

Care workers should be required to test regularly anyway seeing as the vaccine doesn’t guarantee they don’t have the virus.

GreenLunchBox · 04/10/2021 17:57

Who the heck is voting YANBU?Confused

621CustardCream438 · 04/10/2021 17:57

I always wonder whether those who insist care workers should be vaccinated to protect the elderly are willing to do the job themselves. I’ll be honest, I would never work for minimum wage in a stressful, physically demanding job involving other people’s bodily care and therefore I’m just grateful there are those willing. While ideally they’d be vaccinated, the phrase beggars can’t be choosers springs to mind.

XenoBitch · 04/10/2021 17:57

YABU for not seeing the difference between footballers and care workers.
No one should be sacked for not having the vaccine.

BoredatHome321 · 04/10/2021 17:58

@Morgan12

Well Harry Kane isn't going to be looking after my granny so...
😂😂😂😂 Mumsnet hates footballers, imaging comparing a footballer to a carer, might need a trampoline for that leap.
Practicebeingpatient · 04/10/2021 17:58

This is scaring me. My MIL is in a lovely home with wonderful carers. I don't know if they are vaccinated or not but she is double vaxxed and boosted so pretty safe. If her carers are forced to leave their jobs who will look after her?

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/10/2021 17:58

As carers we look after the vulnerable and are closer for long hours.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 04/10/2021 18:00

@trappedsincesundaymorn

I think it should be mandatory for teachers as well....cue teachers giving a host of reasons why I'm wrong.
I'm a teacher. I've been in schools where hepatitis immunisation is compulsory.

I dont get why anyone suddenly thinks compulsory immunisations in specific jobs is suddenly a big issue.

Its been normal for decades

whoisyennefer · 04/10/2021 18:01

@VladmirsPoutine

The thing is they might threaten to fire care home staff but as it stands (and it has for a while now) there's a huge need for care staff. Care homes are begging out for more staff so if they impose a no vaccine no work rule they'll need a continuation plan because it literally means leaving all your grannies and grandads sitting alone on their commodes. It's just not going to happen - they can 'encourage' it but doubt they'll mandate it as law.
You do realise that this is law now don't you? Come November those staff members who are not vaccinated will have to be dismissed, organisations will have no choice.
SuperstarDog · 04/10/2021 18:03

There’s some really silly arguments on mumsnet today.

Maybe some carers that actually, you know, care? The carers I know have seen a lot of people die on their watch over the last 18 months and are desperate to minimise the chance of that happening again. Knowing you might be the vector that brings the virus to the people under your care is actually very stressful for most carers. Before there was little they could do to stop it, now their is.
Shitapillar · 04/10/2021 18:04

I think all those people insisting care workers should be vaccinated should volunteer to go and wipe peoples shitty arses for minimum wage themselves. Because no one should be forced to have an experimental drug they don't want.
Let's see all those who say no jab no job fill the spaces left by people leaving their jobs. How many will there be stepping up do you think? I think we all know, it's gonna be fuck all.

Xenia · 04/10/2021 18:04

I wouldn't fire any of them. We don't have compulsory vaccination in the UK and never have done which is why we have such high vaccination rates.

thepeopleversuswork · 04/10/2021 18:05

Because Premier League footballers are not caring for vulnerable people?

I can’t believe we are still harping on about this…

Porcupineintherough · 04/10/2021 18:07

@Xenia this isnt compulsary vaccination though - no one is holding them down and forcing a needle into their arms, its simply the criteria needed to do that job. And vaccination in order to do a particular job has been around a good long while - I cant do mine without tetanus, hep a and rabies jabs.

VladmirsPoutine · 04/10/2021 18:08

I think by 11 November, IIRC. I'm interested to see where they'll get all the new vaccinated care staff to take over from 12th November Smile

You knew about those jabs before you started the job though. The Covid vaccine for care workers is a change of terms.

StrongSunglasses · 04/10/2021 18:10

Yabu.

PinkiOcelot · 04/10/2021 18:12

I don’t think anyone should lose their job for not getting the vaccine.

Repeat x 1000.
No one has batted an eyelid at compulsory vaccinations in a whole host of jobs from medical and military to education and sales previously.

Why are people bothered now??

PinkiOcelot · 04/10/2021 18:15

@VladmirsPoutine exactly. I don’t think people are going to be queuing up for the roles.

Personally I would rather my mam be looked after by an unvaccinated carer than be neglected and left to her own devices.

England101 · 04/10/2021 18:15

I think the government have picked on a 'easy target' by enforcing this with care workers only. They have not done the same with doctors, nurses etc both of which have strong unions instead they have picked on low paid, often zero hour workers. i think its so IF Covid kicks off again and the vaccine numbers aren't high the government can blame care workers instead of taking the blame. I am vaccinated but if people don't want to be, i don't think forcing them is the answer. There aren't enough care workers as it is so even a decrease of 5% would be devastating for the service users. If the children of the service users aren't happy with unvaccinated carers.... perhaps they could look after they're own elderly parents!!

One thing I've always question is what happens if the service user declines the vaccine, are carers able to refuse to care for them??

Any way rant over.... and to to answer your question footballers aren't really coming into contact with vulnerable members of society in the same numbers so it wouldn't make sense to impose this on them plus they have money £££!! to fight any imposition.

Samcro · 04/10/2021 18:17

Not all people who live in care homes are old.

Stuffin · 04/10/2021 18:17

On the care workers losing their jobs I would rather my relatives had an unvaccinated care worker looking after them than no care worker at all. Don't see the problem with them having vaccination or testing as a requirement then no one loses their job or carer.
