To think that vigilante justice should be back on the table?

We give up the right to take personal revenge in exchange for being protected by institutions like police and courts.

When these institutions spectacularly fail women and children, can we consider the social contract broken?

At this point I'm struggling to see any other way to resolve male violence apart from a wide-sweeping free-for-all on every cat-calling, bantering, beating, raping murderer out there.

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

Ridiculous! It means wackos who are thick attack paediatricians thinking they're paedophiles.
Was just about to post this ..I remember that case. Bloody idiots
Dutch1e · 04/10/2021 17:22

I think there are a lot of us on this thread imagining large groups of roving men playing sheriff against other men. I was thinking more about a cheerful brick to the face of the next sleazy man who says "how about a blowjob, love?" And imagining it en masse every day.

The recommendation upthread of voting and writing stern letters made me smile in a sad way. If that was going to work it probably would have centuries ago.

Vigilante justice always fails.

It's often innocent people who someone has accused who gets hounded rather than those who are guilty getting their just desserts.

I've seen plenty in the media when the baying mobs have got it wrong.

2 wrongs don't make a right

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/10/2021 17:28

YABU, you know that.
Historically vigilante feuds become rampaging mobs that then escalate into genocide. Not a good path to go down.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 04/10/2021 17:30

YABU. Trial by mob will end up with a lot of innocent people stoned to death.

Honestly I can see the argument for death penalty though.

Men already do this? Most male violence is directed at other males. Increasing male violence between men won’t decrease the male violence against women and children, it will only increase it.

And a brick to the face in response to verbal harassment is escalation, which only results in....more violence.

You strike me as a very violent person.

Definitely not.
Vigilantism would allow women even less possibility of justice.

MorganKitten · 04/10/2021 17:39

Nope. It’s very black mirror of you but an awful idea.

Simonjt · 04/10/2021 17:41

Vigilante justice = “I like violence and want an excuse to harm others”

GiraffeClimber · 04/10/2021 17:44

Yes, legitimising widespread street violence will definitely make women safer.

Alternatively, we could root and branch reform the police and criminal justice system?

Nah, let’s just have a free for all Hmm

IsleofRum · 04/10/2021 17:44

I amold enough to remember the guardian angels. Copied in London from the US. Uniformed civilians who would "patrol" the underground die to the polices inability to stop muggings. Don't know if it's still working in the US, but there's a need in the UK.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 04/10/2021 17:44

vigilante justice = another name for violent crime

AlternativePerspective · 04/10/2021 17:48

So a man attacks me and my dh and his mob of mates go out and beat the crap out of him. So essentially the mob attack someone, so the attacker gets a mob to go out there and attack my dh, so they’re now the attackers, so another mob of DH’s friends go out and attack the 3rd attack mob, and before you know it you have complete anarchy where nobody knows who attacked who first any more and the whole village has descended into a place where no-one is safe from attack any more because everyone is guilty of having attacked someone…

And so the cycle goes on.

Not very intelligent thinking there… Hmm

Speaking of US and vigilantes, this also increases racist violence against nonwhite people. Don’t forget that Trayvon Martin was an innocent black teenager murdered by a US vigilante basically for being black, male, in a hoodie and whose only crime was walking through the vigilante’s neighbourhood to buy some skittles from a corner shop.
DroopyClematis · 04/10/2021 17:54

Yep... it's a no-no from me.

Still unable to comprehend the paedophile hunters descending on a paediatrician's home.

Rosesareyellow · 04/10/2021 17:55

Isn’t that in itself losing sight of justice though… I mean, harassing comments are bad - but is it as bad as someone throwing a brick in someone’s face for saying it?? Especially if that person does it in a ‘cheerful’ manner.
As much as I don’t like living in a world where men make such in appropriate comments, I don’t think I’d be keen to live in a world where people get their faces smashed in with bricks en masse…

Dutch1e · 04/10/2021 17:55

I'm not sure.

I'd like to think I was just making a point about the total failure of our institutions to stop male violence against women and kids... but there are rare moments when I am absolutely certain that the next one to catcall me, grope me, harass or assault me will die at my hands. It's an ugly feeling to be pushed that far.

I went to school with two really nice boys, friendly kind and went out of their way to help others. All that changed when their brother was shot and killed. Soon after they joined a gang and went and got revenge. On killing the person responsible that person’s gang came after the members of the gang that the brothers were in. I say were, as both are now dead along with numerous others. This is not an isolated picture it is echoed in every gang across the world. Do you really want more of this?

I never said mob, I said vigilante. As in personal revenge. Outsourcing to a mob is about as effective as outsourcing to the police

That’s the point OP. Personal revenge never stops at a lone attacker, violence is contagious. Read some studies about violence. It spreads and that lone revenge attacker sets off multiple counter revenge attackers. Which then becomes mobs/gangs going after each other and over time, engrained hatred with no one really knowing how it all started only that a member of group x is to be attacked/killed on sight.

Mybalconyiscracking · 04/10/2021 18:06

Did we miss the bit where the police caught and arrested Couzens and the court then locked him up for the rest of his life, very likely in solitary confinement?
That sounds like a form of justice to me, maybe we should have raffled tickets to let people set about him with bricks?
Tempting as it sounds it’s not a society I ultimately want to live in.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 04/10/2021 18:07

I am to old to get harassed nowadays but I found that usually a go fuck yourself arsehole was a fairly adequate response to a what about a blow job comment.
