To think that meat eaters...

Should be comfortable to slaughter animals if they are happy to eat them?

The 'cheap chicken' threads have got me onto this and I'm at home with covid so be gentle!

My own personal background is that I am vegetarian and have been since I was 7. Own decision. I cook meat for my children and my husband because I believe, like i was given, it's a choice that can be made for themselves.

My husband is from farming background and has proactively raised and slaughtered animals. His conscience is entirely clear because he very much has the farmer mindset of raise the animal, give them a good life, dispatch and consume.

It's coming up to 'Turkey time' on the family farm and with the so called shortages forecast this year, I've found myself having more conversations with colleagues about the food chain/supply etc.

We live in an affluent area and we have lots of farm shops, butchers etc. However, I'm shocked that most people I know have said while they couldn't give up meat, they also wouldn't be happy to raise animals for slaughter themselves or to witness their slaughter.

So AIBU to to believe, if you're going to eat meat, it's your moral duty to be ok with animal slaughter?

Just to say, what I've tried in a long winded way above is that i'm not a preachy veggie and I'm not vegan.

It wouldn't bother me at all to receive an entire carcase (of a chicken - I'm a single person household so wouldn't order a whole cow!) and then have to gut and joint it myself. I eat meat, it's delicious, I'll deal with it.

Mincingfuckdragon · 05/10/2021 13:27

OP, I agree. I have slaughtered ie killed, gutted and butchered pigs (about 10), chickens (many) sheep (many) and two cows. It is confronting and makes me more appreciative and respectful of the sacrifice that these animals have made than my husband - who eats far far more meat than I do but can't even watch someone catch a fish. I think people who eat meat should know where it comes from. Also I've been to several feedlots and pig farms and as a result I don’t buy intensively farmed meat.

This would be very good around food waste. I am always just shocked at how much meat people waste for no good reason whatsoever.

REDHERO · 05/10/2021 16:58

'meat people '
🤣🤣🤣
Oh my, one of 'those' descriptions along with people with cervixs and all the other crap use of descriptions 'woke people ' use.

How do some people even function they are so up their own asses

I think maybe you have misinterpreted the comment...

I am always just shocked at how much meat (is being) wasted (by people) for no good reason whatsoever.

Wazzzzzzzup · 05/10/2021 17:03

Soz. @FluffyBooBoo got it

SuperstarDog · 05/10/2021 17:22

I think REDHERO was so wanting to believe that the poster was a militant vegetarian/vegan calling people who eat meat ‘meat people’ that they’ve embarrassed themselves there. 🤭

🙈 Just to confirm I am not militant veggie/vegan, this was right on first page 😂

"I'd eat people if I was stuck and starving in the Arctic. I think most of us would. The urge to find food when starving would crowd out everything else."
Me: "I already checked neighbours for who might look like not too chewy, lean meat in case of serious food shortages😂"

lindyloo57 · 05/10/2021 17:35

I think that if it was shown in schools say in the teenage years, how they slaughter animals, there would be a lot more vegetarians.

jwpetal · 05/10/2021 17:40

I am okay with it. My family raised our food and we had to take part in preparing it. We always knew where our food comes from. I do eat vegetables, but do not grow my own. In the same vein, I would grow if I had to but hate gardening. I would rather prepare the meat.

I would like to point out that most people including vegetarians probably have items with leather in it. I know sweat shops have been mentioned. I think these threads are for people to passive aggressively pass judgement, but personally, I don't care. I like to eat meat. You do you and I will do me.

FluffyBooBoo · 05/10/2021 17:44

@Wazzzzzzzup so people thinking you were a militant veggie would be worse than people thinking you are a potential cannibal...

I've never been more grateful to be chewy and fat Grin

😂
I even took into the account potential energy shortages so fat and chewy are safe because slowcooker doesn't run without leccy. The BBQ on the other hand, always has a supply of gas or coal for a quick grill of something lean and softer😁

Hertsgirl10 · 05/10/2021 17:52

I think I will just buy the meat in the supermarket if it’s all then same to you 😂

Should you have to know how to fix all car faults if you want to drive a car that that ruins the environment?

TonTonMacoute · 05/10/2021 17:56

I would agree that meat eaters should be fully aware of where their meat comes from and what is involved. I live rurally and many friends raise animals on a smallish scale, so most of the meat I buy I know have been well reared.

Killing animals needs to be done humanely and properly, suggesting people cause a huge amount of animal misery by killing them themselves is ridiculous.

A PP mentioned food waste, but meat is pretty far down the list. Huge amounts of vegetables and cereals are wasted in the supermarket supply chain and once bought bread, milk, fruit, vegetables and cheese are all thrown away in far greater quantities than meat.

It is supermarkets that are really the problem, food is too processed too cheap and many people no longer understand how to feed themselves well.

NumberNineTwo · 05/10/2021 18:03

I have no problem with killing animals for meat. But I don’t think vegetarians are guilt free either. Vegetables are fertilised with animal by-products such as blood fish and bone fertiliser. By-products of fertiliser production (CO2) are used to stun animals. Pesticides kill bees and other insects. Farm equipment kills mice etc in the fields. It’s impossible to live and avoid killing animals, vegetarians are fooling themselves.

Lmao behave.
EvenRosesHaveThorns · 05/10/2021 18:27

Secondary school trips to farms and abbatoirs should be on the curriculum

Harls1969 · 05/10/2021 18:27

I haven't got room to keep and slaughter all the different types of animals we like to eat. I also don't grow the vegetables we eat...

Crankley · 05/10/2021 18:35

I have never eaten cheap chicken (eg). I won't buy it from takeaways. I only buy free range meat from a London butcher - from named farms. This is expensive. A chicken costs approx £22 as opposed to £4 or £5 from a supermarket. For last Christmas Lunch I bought a capon (male chicken) which cost over £40. The same applies to all the other meat I buy. I eat less meat as a result and have no intention of allowing the OP to make me feel guilty because I don't kill the animals myself.

JemimaPiddleDick · 05/10/2021 18:38

Yep, no issues, pass me the bolt gun and a little salt and pepper

KylieKoKo · 05/10/2021 18:44

I have never eaten cheap chicken (eg).

I'm sorry I just don't believe that. You've never once in your life ordered chicken in a restaurant, or had a chicken sandwich. Never ever had chicken on a pizza or at a friend or family member's house? You never, even once, ate a chicken burger?

Should you have to know how to fix all car faults if you want to drive a car that that ruins the environment?

Nope. you just need to design and build the car by yourself.

When you've finished the car, start building a road to drive it on.

I'm still learning how to dig my own oil well to get the petrol for the car I haven't built yet.

Mirw · 05/10/2021 18:46

I don't eat a lot of meat, never have. I spent most of my childhood going to the slaughterhouse, first with my great grandpa at the age of 3, then with my grandpa and finally on my own at the age of 21+. Family made black pudding and we had to learn where the blood and fat came from. My brother shot rabbits and pheasants on a regular basis but wouldn't skin/pluck them, that was my job.
I agree with you. Meat eaters need to take more responsibility and stop buying cheap meat that they don't know where it comes from. Buy from butchers who buy on the hoof.

Hertsgirl10 · 05/10/2021 19:08

@2bazookas 😂😂😂 True

Pixxie7 · 05/10/2021 19:12

No I could not slaughter an animal because I am not trained anymore than I am to fix someone’s plumbing issues. Eating meat is part of nature. If you don’t want to eat meat that’s fine but don’t make it sound like a crime.
