Masks on public transport

Aibu to expect people to wear masks on public transport when TFL say it's mandatory?
I reckon a quarter of people aren't. And no one challenges them.
I'm so cross
Entitled special people pah!

It's men. I've just looked round abd it's only bloody blokes not masking up

Whattodoin2022 · 02/10/2021 12:44

I find it's more than half and not just blokes who don't wear a mask on the TFL.

shallIswim · 02/10/2021 12:46

Nothing is being done about it. Fuummmeee....

My experience too - about half of passengers and equally women and men
TakeMe2Insanity · 02/10/2021 12:52

But the government said it was up to people to decide for themselves effectively dumming down the TFL request. Buses are dire as now its getting wetter people don’t want to open the windows and want to stay maskless. In their minds covid is over!

StrawberrySquash · 02/10/2021 13:03

YANBU. It's still in the rules and it's a minor thing to do. Distancing is increasingly difficult too. Thanks for the reduced timetable, Southern!

BashfulClam · 02/10/2021 13:05

They are mandatory in Scotland but ScotRail have advised they ei jot speak to people not wearing them in case they get aggressive or are exempt and it may embarrass them. All blows on my journey yesterday weren’t wearing them and it’s still mandatory in communal indoor areas like shops, pubs, restaurants, train stations….

seaandsandcastles · 02/10/2021 13:06

YABU. It’s not law that I wear one, so I won’t. We need to learn to live with covid, not live in fear of it forever.

How is wearing a mask ‘living in fear’? Honestly, that’s so ridiculous. Is wearing a bike helmet ‘living in fear of a head injury’? Is locking your door ‘living in fear of a burglary’? Living with some risks means using some form of mitigation to reduce risk. Sometimes more than one sort. That’s not living in fear, it’s living in reality.
VladmirsPoutine · 02/10/2021 13:11

People have pretty much decided Covid is finished. I wear a mask but admittedly that is also in part because I dislike being looked at in public. I'd say mask shirkers are evenly split between men and women. I wonder if there've been many arguments started by members of the public asking other members of the public to wear their masks. I wouldn't risk doing so, my peace matters more.

Iloveabourbon2 · 02/10/2021 13:12

I don't wear one anymore and I thought I would. I've never had a massive fear of covid I had to deal with it due to my job and having to work all the way through.

Those blue masks don't do anything anyway OP. I'm sure it's both genders not wearing masks not just the men.

I went one stop on the tube yesterday and I would say less than half of people were wearing masks - both genders. It was peak time and reasonably busy.
I also went to the theatre. On the ticket info it requested people wore masks but id guess only 20-30 % people were.

(I generally use the mainline train where I would say in peak times probably 70% people wear masks, off peak probably 40%)

Fizbosshoes · 02/10/2021 13:17

I'm not sure what you're expecting to be done though as mask wearing has always been, in the main, self policed on trains and tubes.

cardibach · 02/10/2021 13:19
@cardibach Because people are so terrified of catching what is a minor illness for the overwhelming majority that they’re muzzling themselves like a dog.
Oh ffs. Muzzling! Sounds like you are the one living in fear. FYI wearing a mask isn’t to stop you catching the illness, but to stop you passing it on if you have it but don’t know yet. How are we 18 months in and you don’t know this?

RudestLittleMadam · 02/10/2021 13:19

I’ve noticed this too. Far away from London but I work in a supermarket and 95% of the time if someone isn’t wearing as mask it’s a man. The ones coming to my till recently seem to be buying cold remedies and are sniffing and sneezing and look like shit Hmm thanks guys I really appreciate you chucking your germs around. We have plastic screens at the tills but not around customers queuing or colleagues replenishing the shelves etc on the shop floor. Have some respect.

Predominantly men not wearing masks round here. Local village-stores require masks to be worn and everyone does, but at the nearby co-op yesterday I observed most women in masks, no men . This included the shop assistants.
seaandsandcastles · 02/10/2021 13:22

@cardibach I’m not interested in what excuses are peddled out to try and get people to wear masks. I’m just not wearing one.

I wasn’t afraid of catching Covid but observed all the precautions. Then six weeks ago, despite being double jabbed and being cautious, DH and I both caught Covid. It was anything but a minor illness for him, I can assure you.

I’m not wearing a muzzle, thanks very much Hmm I’m wearing a mask to try and prevent passing on covid to other people. I also use hand gel regularly for the same reason. Because I’m not a selfish dick. Completely understand that some people are exempt btw. This isn’t about them.

Ugzbugz · 02/10/2021 13:23

I cam went to london the other week and say about a handful had masks on from young to very old unmasked etc.

No one had one on ok the way home late in the evening.

DeborahAnnabel · 02/10/2021 13:25

I’d say it’s more than that. I don’t.

MurielSpriggs · 02/10/2021 13:29

YABU

To the extent that there is any "rule" at all it needs to go. It just makes the concept of rules ridiculous to have a rule which a large proportion of people openly don't comply with, and which is so badly defined (the exemption particularly) that it is unenforceable anyway.

By all means suggest that nice polite people should wear a mask. But that's in the same category as nice polite people should move down the bus.

And one of the ways we will live with COVID is by people wearing masks in crowded public enclosed spaces. It's a small thing to do.
SquirmOfEels · 02/10/2021 13:32

It's a condition of carriage for TfL, and most people wear them (Tube is germ soup all the damned time!)

Some rourptes/times of day have better compliance than others, but I've never seen less than about 2/3
