Masks on public transport

Aibu to expect people to wear masks on public transport when TFL say it's mandatory?
I reckon a quarter of people aren't. And no one challenges them.
I'm so cross
Entitled special people pah!

And one of the ways we will live with COVID is by people wearing masks in crowded public enclosed spaces. It's a small thing to do

I agree completely. People who don’t wear them are selfish and disrespectful to everyone around them. Particularly horrible of them to not wear them in shops and workplaces where staff are exposed all day.

@VicSynix

Question for everyone who's not wearing masks - are you planning on leaving the UK at any point, and if so what will you do when you arrive in a country where everyone wears masks indoors?
If it's legally enforced without scope for exemption, I'm guessing wear a mask or get arrested! It does kind of depend on the precise rules, doesn't it?
nether · 02/10/2021 16:33

Wearing a mask protects other from you. It's an act of consideration from others.

I've been told that's sanctimonious twaddle, but it's true twaddle. It's all, about consideration for others

There are countries where is legally and socially enforced. Countries where people are more inclined to do things for the greater good. Do you follow social norms when you travel?

Hi Terry, I'm not really sure where this is going! I cover up when I go into mosques for example, and stay in the bit for women.
MrsTerryPratchett · 02/10/2021 16:59

I'm not really sure where this is going!

You said you'd do it if the alternative was arrest. I just wondered if you would when the alternative was stepping on social mores.

Tresal · 02/10/2021 17:01

The majority of people don’t seem to wear them when they are given the choice.

Rosa · 02/10/2021 17:05

Don't come to Italy then as its still required her, also inside shops, musuems etc ... Mind you our numbers are much better than the Uk , who knows if mask wearing has got anything to do with it ??????

Yes, went to menorca in August and mallorca next week. Only wore a mask inside, which was about 1% of my tone there, normally when popping to hotel reception. Masks were required in the flight, unless eating or drinking, so wire one for about 25 mins of 2 hour flight 🤷‍♀️
Verite1 · 02/10/2021 17:11

It’s about 50/50 I think. I don’t think split is on sex grounds - more like age. I was on a tube on Friday night with loads of youngsters on their way out. About 10% wearing a mask on that journey!

The numbers are actually quite a bit worse in Italy when it comes to deaths. This suggests it might be lower numbers testing rather than lower numbers actually having it.

@Whammyyammy

If you wish to keep your comfort mask, crack on, its your choice. But yabvu to expect people to wear them when they don't have too
My issue isn't in places where you don't have to; it's where it's been set as mandatory. Like TFL public transport. I don't get why so many people think they're special. Elsewhere I suppose you can crack on with your choice

I have been on the tube without one. I stopped wearing masks in shops and things a while before ‘they’ said we could stop. Once I noticed others weren’t, and it sort of became socially acceptable not to again. I was never convinced they done anything as I know mine was filthy and bumbled in my pocket everyday, and was sick of not being able to see through my glasses.

Anyway, since I don’t wear them in shops I don’t own any. I don’t generally use public transport as I drive but on a few occasions I have (unplanned) got on a tube or bus and it didn’t even occur to me until I noticed others wearing them that I was supposed to. It was about 50/50.

Pumpkin5piced · 02/10/2021 17:26

Also, the sign on the tube didn’t say you ‘must wear them’ I’m sure it was more of a please wear a mask type message. Didn’t make it sound mandatory.

I wouldn’t go anywhere where I had to do that, certainly not for a holiday.

It’s not, they can call it mandatory all they like but no one is policing it and their are no consequences for not wearing one, the drivers don’t care, like I said the announcement has changed to say it’s there to protect us all rather than police will be enforcing it like it use to say. So not really mandatory is it then?

ellyeth · 02/10/2021 17:38

I wear one on public transport and in my local newsagent (which is small) but I'm not that bothered if other people choose not to.

I'm not entirely convinced by the idea that wearing a mask protects other people more than it protects the wearer - I suspect it's a way to try and shame people by saying they are selfish if they don't wear a mask - and for those wearing a mask to feel morally superior.

I’m just back from France and the rules are very simple and clear. You wear a mask inside and shops have masks outside for people to use if they forget to bring one. It feels much better organised and some clear leadership is being shown by those in charge. Not the fuzzy bollocks we have to put up with from our leaders in England. People said it is the same in Spain too.

Signage on the Tube makes it clear you must wear a mask as it is a condition of travel

Here's an example:
@cardibach I'm fine with you thinking I'm a selfish dick. And you can accept that lots of people think your thick for believing that a scrap of fabric makes a remote bit of difference.
There's so much to enjoy about this statement 🤣 irony, idiocy, and ignorance

Clocktopus · 02/10/2021 17:49

I assess it on a case by case basis. Hospital appointment, busy train, small shop, etc? Yeah, I wear a mask if I'm able to (I have PTSD so it's variable). Top deck of a bus where I'm the only one there, massive shopping centre where I'm more than 5m away from other people never mind 2m, supermarket at 11pm when it's mega quiet, I won't be wearing a mask.

Here's an example:

As I mentioned above, the problem is that it's really not clear what "exempt" means, which makes the whole thing a pointless farce.
