I don't know anyone who uses fresh lemons. Lemon juice yes.

I don't know anyone who uses bottled lemon juice. Lemon juice from a freshly squeezed lemon, yes. I always keep a lemon in the fridge. I never buy bottles of lemon juice as I would never use it all before it goes off.

But why would you even want to buy lemons every week rather than use lemon juice?

Because I don't always want just the juice.

LukeEvansWife · 02/10/2021 14:54

Hummus, falafel, tofu, lentils and plant milks are all just family staples if you are vegan or veggie. Yes even growing up veggie and dirt poor in the 80s. Surely steak is more of a wanky ‘luxury’ item than tofu?! It’s a pound a pack and forms the basis of a lot of Asian cooking! Some really weird ideas on here. Pesto is a basic poor student meal, with pasta and a bit of cheese it makes a meal. The fact that someone can get to 50 in the Uk and never eat it is pretty shocking!

Shocking? If you are shocked by that, then feel grateful for having such a sheltered life. I have never been anywhere that pesto has been offered as an option.

It's not about luxury. Most of the listed foods basically don't taste of anything and require a shit ton of flavour to be added. So that isn't luxury, it just makes people think they are superior to have such wide and varied food choices.

For the sake of the lemon convo. I have always both at home. Lemons and lemon juice in bottle. Always did as far as I can remember. Mum used to bake a lot

@Wazzzzzzzup

Isn't carbonara originally "poor people" food? I remember reading it somewhere that it was something poorer people always had at home. Eggs, bacon (local version), cheese, pasta.
Along the same lines that Yorkshire puddings were served as a first course to fill the belly and save on the meat!
JudgeJ · 02/10/2021 15:06

@KingsleyShacklebolt

It's the Guardian... what do you expect?
The left's version of the DM yet so many on this site seem to find it acceptable.
AGreenerShadeofKale · 02/10/2021 15:06

Different groups have different histories and hence food cultures shocker.
Where is the issue?🤷

Wazzzzzzzup · 02/10/2021 15:06

Ooooh! I didn't know that @JudgeJ !

@borntobequiet

There will soon be stunt lemons to go wit the stunt pineapples.
Already been a thing. MIL had a bowl of plastic fruit in her front room. Not toys, although when the grandchildren came along they used to play with them.
RedMarauder · 02/10/2021 15:09

@ZednotZee

I agree with him.

The WC is a very diverse group, from those that are the fourth generation reliant on benefits to a ward manager married to a headteacher earning well in excess of 100k.

The ward manager and head teacher are both MC simply due to their jobs.

A plumber even if he's filthy rich, unless he has a degree or is knighted, is WC.

Your class traditionally in the UK is related to your family, education and job. There are different class structures e.g. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22007058.amp

AGreenerShadeofKale · 02/10/2021 15:10

Yes stunt lemons have long been a thing. My granny had a bowl of beautiful mixed fruit that included a lemon.
The Jif lemon itself is an icon surely?

Lightisnotwhite · 02/10/2021 15:10

@Berkeys Surely the fact that most of the “ wanky” food has to be imported is the reason its MC.

Clearly you are used to getting chickpeas, pesto and tofu of the shelves. But basil, pine nuts, olive oil etc aren’t grown here because of the climate. Soya ( like lots of crops) needs warmth and big fields, perfect for north and South America. Less so in our cramped country.
If you want lemons and oranges here you need conservatories. A Spaniard would have a tree in the garden.

Potatoes, green winter veg , meat and dairy do well thanks to lots of rain for grass and small fields aren’t so much if an issue. We have seasons. Food should be seasonal.

JudgeJ · 02/10/2021 15:10

@buttermutt

Limes are much fancier than lemons surely?! 😆
So do I score more MC points because I prefer slices of lime in my San Pellegrino than lemon?
RedMarauder · 02/10/2021 15:10

@Wazzzzzzzup

Depends if you drink it from a brown paper bag grin 😁
You have to on public transport on London.

Alternatively you have to drink it out of a coke bottle...Wink

AGreenerShadeofKale · 02/10/2021 15:11

Yes lemon in Spain = frugal. My grannies' equivalent was a Bramley apple to make a pie or go with pork as apple sauce.

Marguerite2000 · 02/10/2021 15:13

Where does vodka stand?
It transcends social class 😁
Re lemons, I don't think they're particularly class associated, but they are seen as a bit of an extra in British cooking. Nice if you can afford them but not essential. We used to have 'scalded lemon' when we were poorly (sliced lemons, boiling water and sugar), my mum did occassionally use one in a cake though but never in savoury cooking. She used a packet mix to make lemon meringue pie, and very nice it was too.

LowlandLucky · 02/10/2021 15:14

My Son eats Lemons instead of oranges. Why on earth would the be considered MC

JudgeJ · 02/10/2021 15:18

@Wazzzzzzzup

Ooooh! I didn't know that *@JudgeJ* !
My late OH, a Tyke, was appalled when he was first given a Yorkshire as a part of a main meal. He loved to have a big YP with thick onion gravy, occasionally he would allow a couple of sausages to sneak in there!
Oblomov21 · 02/10/2021 15:20

It's based on the UK. Comparing it to carbonara, what was the poor man's Italian pasta dish, years ago, is not relevant.

If you were working class and money was very very tight you probably wouldn't be making carbonara from scratch because it's not the cheapest dish. You wouldn't be buying lemons and using one squeeze for a salad dressing.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/10/2021 15:22

Potatoes, green winter veg , meat and dairy do well thanks to lots of rain for grass and small fields aren’t so much if an issue. We have seasons. Food should be seasonal.

Seasonal and locally grown is extremely MC.

More than half the food in the UK is imported.

IsleofRum · 02/10/2021 15:36

Just like the concept of cultural appropriation its a case of "get back in your box, and don't have ideas above/ below your station. Sumptuary laws next!

Gwenhwyfar · 02/10/2021 15:57

"Nice seasonal basic vegetable and fruit are really cheap here"

I only agree partly. Root veg like potatoes and carrots are cheap. The veg I like - aubergine, courgettes, etc. aren't as cheap. Broccoli is very healthy, but not cheap. Berries are very expensive. People on low incomes end up eating a lot of complex carbs because that's the cheapest way to fill up.

"Food in uk in general is actually quite cheap compared to other places like where my family is"

That is true.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/10/2021 16:00

Hummus, falafel, tofu, lentils and plant milks are all just family staples if you are vegan or veggie.

Being vegan or veggie is more middle than working class despite it being cheaper not to eat meat.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/10/2021 16:01

"I never buy bottles of lemon juice as I would never use it all before it goes off."

We mean the Jiff thing. It lasts much longer than fresh lemons.
