To have carried on running?

Went for a run this morning. Ran past a couple of women with offlead dogs (cockapoo and a frenchie) which chased me as I passed them. They were not aggressive, more like running alongside me. The owners shouted of them but the dogs ignored them and carried on following me. I kept on running - before long we (me and dogs!) we’re quite a distance from the owners who were miles behind shouting and running (in a fashion) after us. I ran my usual route, off this path and into a wooded cut through, dogs still by my side. I’m getting pissed off at this point as I know I’m coming to a road and will need to stop so the owners can get their dogs. Sure enough I come to the road and stop. The dogs stop too and just start sniffing around but because we’re now close to a road I feel I have to take the dogs back before they dart across it so I head back the way I came, fuming that this has messed my run up. When the owners catch up one says “if you’d just stopped running we could have got them ages ago!” I replied that their dogs are not my responsibility to which they replied “no need to take them close to a main road though is there? Where is your common sense?” So livid now I say “get your fucking dogs under control, next time I don’t stop at the road”.

AIbU to have not wanted to mess my run up?

I feel really weird about people that dislike animals! Just mho but I find it cruel and that makes me feel suspicious about their character and how they treat creatures that are more vulnerable than them! But don't let that spoil your fitness routine!

Lovely13 · 03/10/2021 19:57

Too many useless dog owners out there. Bought in pandemic, possibly. Need a lot of training. Owners, I mean.

mrbreezeet1 · 03/10/2021 19:59

You were mean and selfish.
You should have stopped and told the dogs to go back to their owners.
It wouldn't have killed you.

NotAnotherPylon · 03/10/2021 20:09

@Completelydonechick surely you must be referring to the people who don't look after THEIR dogs properly? That's cruel, because a dog with no recall could run onto the road at any time, with or without accompanying joggers. On the other hand, the majority of posters who agree with the OP appear to annoyed at the owners, not the dogs.

Tessabelle74 · 03/10/2021 20:10

If you're running through a popular dog walking area then this may happen, you could have just stopped running and let them get the leads on. YABU (and I'm a runner this has happened to)

My DS got pulled down by a dog and knees were bleeding, irresponsible owner wandering behind with no control, said dog “only wanted to play”. Set off a lot of fears

Nomorefuckstogive · 03/10/2021 20:27

Not your responsibility at all. They were BVU.

Moulesvinrouge1 · 03/10/2021 20:28

@purplesequins

It’s just a run who seriously gives a shit if you stop for two minutes?!

on a day like yesterday stopping for 2 minutes would have me get dangerously cold.

Why wouldn’t you just run the dogs back to their owners then? Stay running, stay warm, not cause trauma and carnage? I’m sorry but it was ten degrees yesterday, if you can stop for two minutes without getting hypothermia I might suggest a thicker running outfit
Moulesvinrouge1 · 03/10/2021 20:28

‘Can’t!’

Cavementality · 03/10/2021 20:33

It's not the dogs' fault! You could have helped sooner so why didn't you? Was your run so important that you risked these dogs becoming separated from their owners? It was kind of you not to go on the road but so cruel of you to say that you will next time! Please be kind.

imamearcat · 03/10/2021 20:34

Runner and dog owner here. It is annoying but I always stop / go back once it's clear they aren't going to go back on their own. Just easier all round and no need to get arsey about it IMO.

No, just selfish dog owners
ChaoBella · 03/10/2021 20:48

I would have carried on running. Their next dogs might be kept on a lead.

Sod em.

Hertsgirl10 · 03/10/2021 21:15

Definitely not your problem, people are too lazy to train their dogs then get pissed off with everyone around them, it’s weird.

Americano75 · 03/10/2021 21:22

I love dogs but this would have seriously pissed me off, if they had even been grateful that you'd brought them back it wouldn't have been as bad but to have been ever more dickish would have earned them a mouthful. Fucking cheek.

Keep your dog under control and no-one will have anything to write about! Smile
ShoshanaBlue101 · 03/10/2021 21:34

YANBU - the dogs shouldn't be off lead until they have learned recall. It's the dog owners responsibility to train their dogs, not yours.

Until they have learned recall the dogs should be on a long line. That's their issue and nothing to do with you.

Summer23 · 03/10/2021 21:36

They were cheeky to expect you to stop, however, I personally wouldn’t have kept going for ages if the owners could not keep up. At least they tried. Dogs may have great recall but unlikely any dog will have ‘bullet proof’, just like kids, there are times where they do catch you off guard. Dog owner and runner here.

shallIswim · 03/10/2021 21:38

There's some very ineffective recall that goes on. I have a dog whose recall is bulletproof. He's honestly a wonder. But I'm quite firm and trained him to a whistle. I hear all sorts of lame 'come here Fido' stuff and random requests rather than commands.

Summer23 · 03/10/2021 21:51

Training is very much worth it, for both the dog and owner.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/10/2021 22:05

i'd love to have a bullet proof dog tbh.

ooft · 03/10/2021 22:36

Sorry but the thought of you and the two dogs galloping happily off into the woods with the owners chasing after you all has me in stitches!

FWIW I'm not keen on dogs and would have hated that

Toomuchtrouble4me · 03/10/2021 22:48

They are just bloody dogs - small brained dogs. You knew they were chafing you. Of course you should have done the event thing and stopped.
