AIBU to think it is totally depressing that people arent willing to make even small changes to try and stop the environmental crisis that is here. For example, not wanting to use an eco programme on machines because it takes longer, not prepared to dry clothes outside rather than use a dryer, driving everywhere rather than walking. If people who could, made small changes, it would all add up and we might be able to halt some of the damage we are doing to the environment and childrens futures.

Here's how much we contribute

@XenoBitch

I am confused. So the point of an Eco wash is to use less electricity? Yet we are being encouraged to use electric cars?
I'm sure this is to do with business interests for friends in high places like HS2.

But why are their emissions so high? Because they manufacture stuff we buy. All that crap that adorn the shelves of debenhams and you get given for Xmas that gets put in a drawer, all the plastic crap your kids have, the cheap shoes, handbags, the electronics, the phone you are reading this on and the cheap cushion you bought from Home Bargains you are sitting on, the cheap make up brushes that lasted two uses, the light bulbs, the tinsel on your Xmas tree, the cheap clothes, the household plastics, kitchen ware, furniture, cars even trains and ships. The list goes on and on

China is selling this cheap stuff to you and everybody else. It’s not a public service. They are getting wealthy from these transactions (and this is a good thing, no one likes to be in grinding poverty).

Each of us is a consumer and responsible for those Chinese emissions

You’ll find China is proudly responsible for it; good for them to get rich while the UK fiddles and produces hardly anything of note.

I mean, we could excuse America’s past emissions in the same way, being the world’s export powerhouse in the 1950s and 1960s but no one ever does. Why is that?

every time a new consumer is introduced to the world and our insatiable appetite to give them more and more 'stuff' as cheaply as possible we contribute to that

Oh look an anti-natalist too.

Apples and pears.

Electricity to drive is considerable better than using fossil fuels, so it is a gain.

Using less electricity because of better efficiency, whether that's an econcycle, a slightly dimmer screen on yout telly/tech, or a better car battery are also all gains.

Lots of little gains all add up, and so are worth having, whatever the issues with other things or in other places

New study out today shows that UK is 8th globally in terms of our historical carbon emissions.

Puts our responsibility into perspective...

rachelvbwho · 05/10/2021 18:55
  1. I do use the eco cycle- except on towels or really dirty/muddy thing
  2. I can't dry outside-have you seen the weather recently?
  3. School is 5 miles away, nursery and work are 5 miles away (in the opposite direction) so walking is not a possibility

I have made lots of changes for the environment- you can't tar everyone with the same brush because they haven't made the same changes as you. Peoples circumstances matter.

@grasstreeleaf

Will look into it. Have to look at the programmes on our machine. We already have to soak sports kit in vinegar though to get the stink out!GrinShock

We do have solar to produce our own electricity though. Get quite a lot. It heats our hot water in the summer. Also don't have a drier and use an airer or the airing cupboard. We also have an electric car.

@grasstreeleaf there’s brilliant stuff you can buy called Halo that you put in with your washing and it completely gets rid of the smell of sports kit or sweaty underarms in shirts etc. It’s amazing.
silveryslade · 13/10/2021 14:29

Ooh thanks. Will have a look.Smile

silveryslade · 13/10/2021 14:29

Sorry name change. That in reply to @SunnyUpNorth.

SunnyUpNorth · 13/10/2021 20:06

@silveryslade no problem, it’s this stuff, it’s pricey but lasts ages as you only need a capful.
