To think the new James Bond shouldn't be a woman?

SummersOverSeasideTown · 30/09/2021 17:55

Kier Starmer- despite not knowing what a woman is- thinks the new Bond should be a woman.

Aibu to this will help sexual equality in the same way Insulate Britain are helping the climate change cause?

What we need are strong roles written and intended for women, by replacing a figure such as Bond all we do is further alienate the entrenched and worse create an idea that society is moving towards equality when really it is just smoke and mirrors?

Lara Croft is Lara Croft. You can't just eradicate everything about who she is and her backstory/history and change her from Lara Croft to Dave Croft.

You can introduce Dave Croft alongside, but you can't just turn Lara Croft into a man. Neither James Bond into a woman. It wouldn't be Bond anymore. Yes, introduce some fantastic female characters, but don't just slap one in as Bond and say "that'll do, Bond's a woman now".

@MargaretThursday

The problem with the new fad of casting women into traditionally male roles is that I suspect what we will see is:
  1. Initial applause at how wonderfully inclusive they are
  2. Complaints that it didn't work after filming.
  3. Reversion to type on the male roles.
  4. More quietly: men being cast in traditionally female roles on the basis that if they do it for one they can do it for the other.
  5. Tremendous applause as how well it worked.
  6. Men then still getting the traditional male roles automatically, and women finding they have to fight with the men for traditional female roles.

I suspect the same thing will happen on a lesser extent on colour-blind casting, which on the whole I think is a good idea, but suspect it will end up being an excuse to make the industry more white in the main (good guy) parts.

I hope I'm being cynical though.

You couldn't have put this more perfectly.

I wish people would stop being so desperate to be heard making the "right noises" about this, as if point one is where it starts and ends.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/10/2021 15:59

Ripley was written as a man.

I've never seen those films, but I wonder if in that case it was more that the original writing was just using the 'default male' assumption, and the part wasn't very 'gendered' ? Whereas Bond is categorically male, and eg both Villanelle and Eve definitely female for the dynamic to work?

mondayschild21 · 01/10/2021 17:15

There should not be a new James Bond, time to end the franchise. If it must continue then it should be a man.

Againstmachine · 01/10/2021 17:16

007 and Bond are code names, it’s hinted to that there have been a few, mainly because of the length of time he’s been around and line of work

007 is a code name in fact we have a woman as 007 in the new film.

With regards to Bond it hasnt been hinted to code name, Lazenbys bond was the same as Daltons as his wife Tracey is mentioned as being one and the same same with. And Skyfall should have put all those rumours to rest that Bond is not a code name.

TheKeatingFive · 01/10/2021 17:21

The new 007 already is a woman

adawong · 01/10/2021 17:54

007 could be a man, a woman, a robot, a slug or anything else. James Bond is a white british man.

Againstmachine · 01/10/2021 17:56

Exactly should not be a woman or any minority, if people want these roles write them.

Couldn't have put it better myself Grin
postingfortraffichere · 01/10/2021 20:09

@adawong nowhere does is state he is white in the books? A man, yes - white, no.

Againstmachine · 01/10/2021 20:17

You are completely wrong

In “Live And Let Die”, it’s noted that Bond and Felix Leiter stick out in a predominately black area because they are “two white men.”

Fleming based bond on hisself a white man and described him as lookong like Hoagie Carmichael a white man and even Flemings drawings he did hisself are of a white man.

adawong · 01/10/2021 20:26

Read Live and let die.

Againstmachine · 01/10/2021 20:40

Bond is white from the descriptions in the novels and Fleming hisself, he is from a Swiss mother and. A Scottish dad, and a spy on those days where bond operated would have been white.

Stop with your agenda bond is white.

Againstmachine · 01/10/2021 20:41

@adawong

Not aimed at you

Henrywilldoit · 01/10/2021 20:42

Agree Bond should be male.

I find it quite patronising and entirely missing the point to say that the next Bond should be a woman.

adawong · 01/10/2021 20:46

Againstmachine
No worries cross post.

waybill · 01/10/2021 23:46

'Miss Marple' is a white British woman.
'Hercule Poirot' is a white Belgian man.

They are both characters in long-running book, tv and film series and have both been played by a number of different actors over the years. Just like James Bond, they are who they are, and that's that.

ColorMagicBarbie · 02/10/2021 00:22

No, 007 is James Bond. There is no other 007 in the books.

TheKeatingFive · 02/10/2021 08:13

There is no other 007 in the books.

And the films have already diverged from that

DoNotGetADog · 03/10/2021 13:16

Have they? I’m not an expert by any means, but I didn’t think there had been other 007s in the films? The are other double 0 agents (eg 006) but I can’t recall another 007. I could well be wrong though!
TheKeatingFive · 03/10/2021 13:19

The new one has a different 007 yes

Polkadots2021 · 03/10/2021 13:51

@Libertaire

I agree. Not everything in life has to be ‘woke’. Bond should always be a white, male, ex-Navy officer.

That doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a series of films about a female super spy who achieves her aims by the use of brains & guile, rather than brawn & violence....

Totally agree although brawn and violence would still be acceptable in my eyes Grin

James Bond is a bloke, that's the end of it really. Don't deny me Mr Bridgerton either, or at least the chance of it, or someone equally hot, because that's at least half then fun of going to see a Bond movie.

Againstmachine · 03/10/2021 19:57

Having seen latest bond a film series with

Lashana Lynch MI5 and CIA Ana de armas agents would be great.

Alleycat02 · 03/10/2021 20:11

Just seen the film, James Bond is not a woman. After Bond retires from MI6, a woman agent is given the 007 title in his place. He is persuaded to return to service and given the 007 title back, so are they kind of wimping out on the idea of a female 007 or reinforcing that Bond (a man) is the only 007??
Who knows, either way the film was too long....

Againstmachine · 03/10/2021 20:18

Not really she was most of film 007, she gave him it back, due to mission undertaking and it meant a lot to him.

Sean bean is only other actor to be a major 00 so she is in good company .

To me was perfect length.
