Furlough ending and lots of jobs available

Ex colleague on furlough since the start moaning that furlough ends and may lose job. Had a whole year of staying at home paid furlough and knew this was a possibility did nothing to train or look for alternative to travel industry role of cabin crew.

Some sectors are calling out for staff but feels since cabin crew not all back should keep being paid. In normal times excess staff are laid off redundancy etc and have to go source another job.
In my opinion furlough has gone on long enough aibu? Cannot pay people to sit around anymore look fir another role.
Yabu furlough should continue for cabin crew etc to wait until sector fully recovers.

I’m glad you qualified that with “some”.

Plenty of crew I know of that were made redundant have taken up the sort of jobs you describe…..

As for those still hanging onto jobs - as at least one pp mentioned upthread some reduced hours schemes run by some airlines have forbidden the employees from taking a paid second job. That hasn’t stopped some crew members (pilots and cabin crew) I know of going off and acting as volunteers for the NHS vaccination scheme - it’s definitely not been a case of all crew members sitting around on their backsides watching the furlough payments roll in.

As for the “bit harder work” comment….. A good crew can make the job look like a doddle but there can be occasions when it certainly isn’t and in terms of the whole deal over a period of months I certainly wouldn’t describe many cabin crew rosters I’ve actually seen as being “easy” .

Twentypast - good point, and for the avoidance of confusion my last post was also made in response to REDHERO.

REDHERO · 04/10/2021 14:00

@Twentypast

the post was about a cabin crew employee not others 🤔

If someone’s been on furlough all this time and not done anything then they’re bone idle. Surely it was an opportunity to something else at the same time and bring in some extra cash. Let’s face it if someone is still on furlough then they’re not going to be required going forward. Ridiculous.

Some not all, like in any walk of life, some right haughty ones but basically waiters of the skies, some that roll up sleeves and volunteer or get another job. Anyway, furlough ended so need to work or use savings etc now.
Twentypast · 04/10/2021 14:07

Waiters of the sky? Are you aware of how much safety training and exams they have to take? And not just once but there's recurrent training and exams. And many have to qualify on more than one aircraft type depending on the airline.

wigglerose · 04/10/2021 14:08

There are very few entry level jobs nowadays. Most jobs require some form of experience or qualifications. There are undesirable jobs that struggle to recruit but these are usually not well paid.

lannistunut · 04/10/2021 14:08

UK had a rapidly-implemented and poorly-designed furlough scheme, which is ending sooner than EU equivalents.

We should be giving ongoing support to certain sectors.

The UK government is generally incompetent, plus we have to hide the Brexit fallout behind covid chaos. It's a mess.

  1. Some employers retention schemes banned employees doing “something else” at the same time.
  1. Looking at the news today with regard to the further relaxation of UK Covid restrictions hopefully at least some of the airline employees still on furlough will be required going forward…..and if there’s a quick upturn the airlines will be grateful they didn’t lay everybody off (see Twentypast’s post with reference to training and exams, then add to the list the complications/time taken clearing of criminal record checks and in some cases for some airlines obtaining Visas to allow individual to work on some routes).
Comefromaway · 04/10/2021 14:40

@REDHERO

Some airline employees think they are above waitresses, shelf stacking, caring, etc., the jobs that have vacancies . However, it's not dissimilar to popping hand luggage above the seats, serving tea, coffee and ready meals, showing passengers the toilets or way in and out, similar skill set really. A bit harder work and on the ground but if you have bills to pay?
Well my friend who was furloughed VOLUNTEERED in NHS hospitals on a scheme called Project Wingman serving food, drink and generally looking after NHS staff in the height of the pandemic. As did thousands of other furloughed staff.

She then trained as a vaccinator.

That good enough for you?

notimagain · 04/10/2021 15:19

@Comefromaway

“ Well my friend who was furloughed VOLUNTEERED in NHS hospitals on a scheme called Project Wingman….”

A few of my friends/former colleagues did exactly the same..

@OverTheRubicon
I quite clearly said in my post people who CAN work which is obviously excluding disabled and single parents so if your looking for an argument you might want to try reading a post properly.

Even if on benefits and not working, people are still going to be far worse off than someone who has been on furlough

I know plenty of people who claim benefits and their monthly income is more than someone who works for minimum wage, never mind the 20% less on furlough.
