I really like it.

However, if I were local resident I'd be careful about rocking the boat too much and putting the conservation area in jeopardy. Lose that protection, and the area becomes fair game to being developed in a similar way to other areas, which have become clusters of flats that no one would choose to live in were it not for the fact that the rest of the town has become unaffordable. These new developments aren't supported by suitable infrastructure, schools, roads, gps etc.

Be careful what you wish for.

If you live in a conservation area you should know the score - and be grateful to live in one.
That said - his house looks better than the neighbours.

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/09/2021 23:16

Quite like it. Can't see why the council are bothered.

CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 29/09/2021 23:36

I thought it was lovely

PrincessNutella · 30/09/2021 04:23

I have no problem whatsoever with the lilac.

Pikamoo · 30/09/2021 05:04

I don't like the lilac but it doesn't look like the type of house where anyone should have any say over how it's painted. It just looks like a normal house.

Pretty normal houses can be in a conservation area. Ours is. Our house isn’t ‘special’ (between the wars) but some other houses and flats on the road are and the conservation area is to protect the general look of the road. Although I think the council was a bit late in doing that because most of the houses already had upvc windows, unsympathetic porches etc.

I love it.
He should appeal the decision.
It's not exactly opposite Buckingham Palace is it?!
If I were a neighbour, I'd do mine in a contrasting barbie pink or bright blue 🎨

sbhydrogen · 30/09/2021 08:11

It looks far better in lilac than cream. The neighbour's house is so ugly, how is that in a conservation area?

bellabasset · 30/09/2021 08:23

It's quite a soft colour, better than grey, which on a dull day in the UK is horrible.

kinzarose · 30/09/2021 10:57

It's lovely, but really stands out compared to the boring houses beside it.

3scape · 30/09/2021 11:11

It looks good, tidy, well maintained. But in my limited experience that village always did have residents with a fear of the "different". I rember some older man harassing my friend for her "shocking" clothes in the 90s. She was wearing a tie dye dress. In summer Hmm

3scape · 30/09/2021 11:15

I should add, my house is a light blue so I'm probably hellishly biased. Grin

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 30/09/2021 11:30

I would love paint my house light blue.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 30/09/2021 11:31

to paint

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2021 11:33

That’s lovely. There’s a row of similar period houses in a conservation area in Truro, all painted different colours. It’s beautiful, not at all Balamory 😁

Each to their own I guess. My MIL thinks houses painted anything other than white are “distasteful”.

sashh · 30/09/2021 11:36

I like the colour too.

If it was built in 1902 then surely the colour would be col dust and smog filth.

EdgeOfACoin · 30/09/2021 11:36

If it's a conservation area, it's part of the deal that there will be rules dictating how you can paint your house. Silly to complain about it.

The lilac seemed okay to me, but I'm not the council.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/09/2021 11:40

Lovely!

My Mother in law seems genuinely shocked we’re thinking of painting our front door red.
