I agree OP and Oxhey has a conservation area???? I'd understand if the houses either side were a) both in the same style as the lilac house and b) were both painted cream. But WTF telling this poor guy he can't paint his house a perfectly nice colour? It's not like he's painted it lime green or stuck a shark through the roof!

CandidaAlbicans2 · 29/09/2021 18:47

It's much nicer than the surrounding houses IMHO, and surely if the council are so touchy about appearances they wouldn't allow all those wheelie bins to be parked out the front of his neighbour's place. That looks shite!

nosyupnorth · 29/09/2021 18:50

I think the lilac looks fine. It's not like the bloke painted one house in a row of gorgeous historial cottages. The country has plenty of houses from the early 1900s and I think any conservation of historic character of the street is already blighted by house to the right of it.

EvilPea · 29/09/2021 18:51

It’s a lovely looking house. I can’t see the objection

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/09/2021 18:52

Wonder what they'd make of Tobermory

To quite like the lilac house?
GreyhoundG1rl · 29/09/2021 18:53

It's awful. It may be a perfectly normal colour for a little girl's bedroom, but not for the entire facade of a house.

I agree about the wheelie bins, they're my pet hate.

@TheVanguardSix

Just saw the expanded photo with the other houses. Christ! The POS to the right of the lilac house... why isn't anyone complaining about that turdpile? It looks like a full litterbox. And that's me being nice.
Full litter box?! How so?
Almaisnormal · 29/09/2021 18:58

My home town. The council have systematically destroyed much of the towns character. .Most notably the beautiful cassiobury park gates in the town centre to build a road. The natural pond in the high street has been redeveloped to look like a shit hole, and basically watford is now a block of flats. and they complain about this...fucking joke

Peggytheredhen · 29/09/2021 18:59

Bristol has many multi-coloured houses, in Totterdown and Hotwells for example. Many even pre-1902...

Mine was pink.

MilduraS · 29/09/2021 19:01

I love visiting family in Ireland because of the colourful houses. I think it makes even the most big-standard streets look more interesting and well cared for.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 29/09/2021 19:01

I think it looks lovely and should be left as it is.

PeterPomegranate · 29/09/2021 19:06

I like the lilac (and voted as such) but conservation areas do restrict what you can do with your house and often mean that changes (like painting your house a different colour) require planning permission which wouldn’t be needed in another street. Them’s the rules.

MintJulia · 29/09/2021 19:08

Yes, I quite liked it too. I doubt those councillors are life and soul of the party Hmm

Skysblue · 29/09/2021 19:09

I like it too.

It’s so arbitrary. I live in a conservation area and someone painted their house black - yes black - it used to be white. The neighbours complained to the council and the council’s response was that you don’t need planning permission to paint your house and it’s the owner’s choice of colour. This was in 2019.

With such different responses from two councils, how are people supposed to know what the law is?!

Underthestairsbears · 29/09/2021 19:11

It looks lovely. What a shame. I love the beautiful houses in West Wales that are all different colours, they exude character.

RudestLittleMadam · 29/09/2021 19:15

The lilac is nicer than the boring cream colour. I don’t usually like lilac that much but the house looks much better for it.

Looubylou · 29/09/2021 19:18

It's lovely - it should be in the countryside, stood on it's own though. Stuck out like a sore thumb when it was cream too. It makes the other houses look drab. I bet they are jealous deep down.

Mumoblue · 29/09/2021 19:20

It’s adorable. There was a pink house near where I grew up, and it made me smile every time I walked past it.

Almaisnormal · 29/09/2021 19:20

lilac or not must be worth around 800 plus

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2021 19:20

Yes. I like it too and it looks better than it painted cream.

Wazzzzzzzup · 29/09/2021 19:20

Why is it a conservation area though???

Viviennemary · 29/09/2021 19:22

Iagree. It looks quite nice.

flippertyop · 29/09/2021 19:29

Another vote for lilac

Almaisnormal · 29/09/2021 19:30

@Wazzzzzzzup
