To disagree with NHS only petrol stations?

pistachio20 · 27/09/2021 11:08

Some petrol stations around me have now said that they are only allowing in NHS staff to refuel - apparently checking ID.

I find this completely ridiculous and unfair - not only because the majority of NHS staff where I live can easily get public transport to work (most who I know don’t drive to work anyway, and get train/bus anyway due to lack of free parking!).

So many crucial jobs require people to drive, let alone people with caring responsibilities, mobility issues, etc.

AIBU to think that it’s unfair?

One quick and simple solution would be to close schools. Schools are good at online learning so kids would be OK and all of the journeys saved by school staff and parents would mean massively reduced demand for petrol.

Are you for real?? This is not a solution at all for a crisis that should be bloody well managed by our incompetent government by now!
LoverOfAllThingsPurple · 28/09/2021 17:24

I work in social care and queued up like everyone else. However, I received an email saying NHS workers in the region did not get priority for fuel, instead suggested lift sharing and using public transport.

AICM · 28/09/2021 17:27

Overnight it would massively reduce demand for petrol. Free up roads to makes journeys more fuel efficient.

It would work.

TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits · 28/09/2021 17:29

My dad is a hackney driver in London, no fuel = no work = no cash.

I believe cab drivers should be a priority, as should carers and anyone who drives for a living. More so than random members of the NHS. Yes nurses, drs and ambulances need fuel - but OTs, physios, the numerous back office managers/assistants? No.

Yes! Brilliant idea!

No at all one will be able to work. Because they'll have to do childcare. Oh...including teachers! Because they can't teach and look after their own children at the same time.

Even during the lockdowns schools were open for keyworker and vulnerable at risk children fgs!

OuiOuiBonjour · 28/09/2021 17:33

That was supposed to be "no one at all will be able to work".

Jesus Christ no. That is the worst possible solution to anything ever
Justcashnosweets · 28/09/2021 17:35

I am an NHS nurse. I don't want priority treatment at all, I want a proper fucking wage rise so I don't have to worry about paying my mortgage.

You either don't have kids, are a SAHM or are a complete dimwit. People like you make me so angry. How is it a quick and simple solution for thousands of working parents to take time of work? Not even taking into account how badly kids have been affected throughout the pandemic by not attending school. Oh and FYI not all schools are good at online teaching either, my son's teacher was shite and it was months of hell during lockdown.
Eatdrinkbemerry · 28/09/2021 17:42

@Wineiscooling - what is essential? I think majority of people filling up are people who need their cars for work, school runs, caring for relatives etc. Yes we have a small minority who are just being selfish and filling up when they don’t need to. But how do we know who falls into what category?
Unfortunately when people start panicking it’s doesn’t take long for that to trickle down. I personally wasn’t worried with my two bars of diesel until I started seeing all the queues and then I did panick as I do need my car for work and for school drop offs and clubs that we can’t walk to.
Since I filled up on Sunday I have walked to do my shop. Walked to my gym when I normally jump in the car. All we can do is hope that majority of people fill up and then maybe use it only when they can’t use public transport or walk etc.

I also think we should not put blame on the public but aim it where it actually lies. The media for causing a frenzy and the government for once again not preparing a problem that they probably knew would occur.

Ilovetravelling · 28/09/2021 17:44

If only all of this had not been mentioned in the news then people would of carried on as normal & not rushed out panic buying fuel. Things wouldn't be half as bad as they are now! People are just selfish.

Lennybenny · 28/09/2021 17:46

Oh that would annoy me. Key workers essential staff etc. Nope, we're all working, we're all trying to get to jobs. Leave earlier and queue up like we all have to.
This is nearly as bad as the let nhs staff shop early, discount crap. A lot of people were having to work long days and couldn't shop. If they shut the schools....I lose my job.
Anyone know where Tom's millions went?

PrivateHall · 28/09/2021 17:47

I work for the NHS, in an essential role, in the community so need to drive to houses all day around a large geographical area. But I completely agree with you OP. Of course other people need fuel just as much as I do!

WTAFhappened123 · 28/09/2021 18:02

REALLY unfair. So if you’re an NHS secretary or accountant (that can and has worked from home) for example you can get priority over veterinary staff, teachers etc it’s lunacy! Limit the amount to £40/£50 for everyone and no jerry cans!!

Mirw · 28/09/2021 18:02

You would think that NHS staff didn't get paid and only volunteered their time. They are not special. They are paid to do a job like all other workers. Lorry drivers should be first on the list. Or carers. This special treatment is an absolute nonsense. People now expect it.

Popsicle007 · 28/09/2021 18:06

IF there was a fuel shortage I would agree but there isn’t. Any shortage is solely due to idiotic selfish panic buyers. There would be enough for everyone. The media are the ones scaremongering and all the sheep are listening, forcing prices up. A limit should be introduced and stockpiling not allowed.

AICM · 28/09/2021 18:17

How do you stockpile petrol?

But there IS a shortage at the place where it matters. These IS a shortage at the pumps.

Joesmummy1 · 28/09/2021 18:18

God forbid you or yours is calling an ambulance tonight in an emergency and there’s no crew or staff in ED to treat.
It’d put your view that it should be a free for all to the test.

ellyeth · 28/09/2021 18:22

I think it's fair. If you had a relative ill in hospital or waiting for an emergency ambulance, would you not want these people to have priority? It's not all the petrol stations that are doing this, just some. Even admin staff and receptionists are important - if they are not there, people who are supposed to be caring for patients have to pick up the slack.

Curerofsouls · 28/09/2021 18:25

There are public services other than the NHS that also need to keep running too. I acknowledge that the NHS is important but there are other things too.
