Is it Jab or Jag?!

FawnFrenchieMum · 27/09/2021 10:19

I see both written and never know which is right?

I always say jab but wondering if I’m wrong?

YANBU - Jab
YABU - Jag

@OuiOuiBonjour

They are both right.

Jag if you are Scottish ("jaggy" means sharp)

Jab is other dialects.

So many MNers become filled with rage over people who "incorrectly" say "jag". They just don't like Scottish people, I guess.

Let's make their wee ignorant heads explode and tell them that over the pond they're "shots" Grin

Geamhradh

Chap my door and we can have a blether and cook up some plots Wink.

SoupDragon · 27/09/2021 11:14

I'd never heard it called a jag until I read it on Mumsnet (I'm South London born and bred). MN has been a revelation for all kinds of slang/dialect things.

Berkeys · 27/09/2021 11:14

Jab

Suitcaseseverywhere · 27/09/2021 11:15

@OuiOuiBonjour @Geamhradh I’ll redd the table and get the kettle on 😁

iglpgl · 27/09/2021 11:17

I'm not Scottish but live in Scotland. I refuse to call it a jag, even though almost everyone else does - it's always been a jab to me! Grin

seaandsandcastles · 27/09/2021 11:18

It’s jab. If you’re saying “jag”, you’re saying it wrong wherever in the world you are.

No, you are wrong. Jag is a different word and is used in some parts of the uk to describe an injection.

No you are not.

Jab in some areas.

Jag in others.

It's always been jag where I am. It's not wrong, just a different wird.

tigger1001 · 27/09/2021 11:22

*word

shouldistop · 27/09/2021 11:24

@seaandsandcastles are you always so ignorant?

AryaStarkWolf · 27/09/2021 11:25

Never heard Jag before

AbandonedCharacter · 27/09/2021 11:25

Some very small-minded people in this thread. I've always loved languages and dialects and love finding out what words are used in different countries or regions.

TartanJumper · 27/09/2021 11:25

Jab for me, never heard of jag until this thread.
Or shot, if you are American I suppose.

All the same people who will say that Halloween is American in a couple of weeks.

What about "shot"? Are 333 million Americans "wrong" or is it just the entire population of Scotland that should be forced to say "jab". You need to notify the Scottish Dictionary that it's been "wrong" for four centuries btw.
AbandonedCharacter · 27/09/2021 11:29

Yes @KingsleyShacklebolt - I suspect there will be quite the overlap of posters!

Imagine not being able to imagine different countries or regions using different words

TartanJumper · 27/09/2021 11:30

@JasonMomoasgirlfriend

Vaccine.

Jab or Jag just sounds stupid to me.

Technically it's inoculation, surely if you want the correct word? The vaccine is the medicine, the inoculation is the act of sticking the needle in.
Suitcaseseverywhere · 27/09/2021 11:31

Halloween is American and a turnip is a swede and you shouldn’t be carving them anyway.

AbandonedCharacter · 27/09/2021 11:32

"Halloween is American and a turnip is a swede and you shouldn’t be carving them anyway".

Is that right, aye?

Suitcaseseverywhere · 27/09/2021 11:35

Sorry @AbandonedCharacter my sarcasm obviously didn’t come through.

AbandonedCharacter · 27/09/2021 11:37

Sorry @Suitcaseseverywhere - I was riled by other posters' attitudes!

Who made you the authority? You’d hate Scotland - we hae so many muckle local dialects and words that yir heed wid bla.
Lockdownbear · 27/09/2021 11:43

@ToottoootSmile
Can you translate the last bit for me please?

Lou98 · 27/09/2021 11:44

I say jag - also from Scotland. The only people I know that say jab are English.

Can't believe it actually annoys people that someone says it differently to them 😂
