Is it Jab or Jag?!

170 replies

FawnFrenchieMum · 27/09/2021 10:19

I see both written and never know which is right?

I always say jab but wondering if I’m wrong?

YANBU - Jab
YABU - Jag

Jag- Scotland.

Mothersister · 27/09/2021 10:46

It depends whether you’re talking about an injection or a car

thelastgoldeneagle · 27/09/2021 10:46

Depends where you are. Most of England - jab. Scotland - jag. Both are fine. People getting upset with one use need to get a life.

Suitcaseseverywhere · 27/09/2021 10:47

Both.

Definitely jag in some parts of the uk.

Really surprised that people are so unaware of regional differences in language.

JaneTheVirgin · 27/09/2021 10:48

Jag is the worst word I've ever heard. I'm lucky enough to have never heard it until the pandemic, but I truly hate it with everything I am.

Completely irrational response I know, but it's one of those words to me.

TheSpiral · 27/09/2021 10:48

@Lockdownbear

what's wrong with vaccine? It has more syllables than necessary.

Nettles don't vaccinate you, what do they do?

They sting.
Lockdownbear · 27/09/2021 10:51

I have occasionally heard I got stung my a jaggy nettle never just a nettle and never a stingy nettle

plinkplinkfizzer · 27/09/2021 10:51

From jagged so jag makes more sense .

TheWoleb · 27/09/2021 10:51

@discombobulatedonion

But jag is the most common used word in Scotland. Why does that make you angry?
Do you not like Scots having their own dialect?

Do you get mad about other words we used too?

Suitcaseseverywhere · 27/09/2021 10:52

Is jag/jab the new aitch/haitch? The new “Halloween is an American import”? The new gotten and outwith and redd aren’t words?

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 27/09/2021 10:52

I can't vote as both are correct.

TheWoleb · 27/09/2021 10:52

@Hexagonalblock

That's American! I didnt realise it had made it's way over here. Where in the UK do people say shot?

AbandonedCharacter · 27/09/2021 10:53

As I'm Scottish, I use jag. It's been in wriiten use since 1710 according to the Dictionary of the Scots Language.

IntermittentParps · 27/09/2021 10:54

Jab is English, ja Scottish, so neither are incorrect.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 27/09/2021 10:54

Jag in Scotland. Always has been. Jab elsewhere. Or vaccine, or immunisation, or injection.

I once heard a mother refer to her baby going for its "needles".

AbandonedCharacter · 27/09/2021 10:56

"I once heard a mother refer to her baby going for its "needles".

That's would put me off going!

KingsleyShacklebolt · 27/09/2021 10:56

@Lockdownbear

what's wrong with vaccine? It has more syllables than necessary.

To be contrary... I would say nettles sting you. Thistles jag you. Or thorns, or brambles.
idontlikealdi · 27/09/2021 10:56

Jag is Scottish IMO

Hexagonalblock · 27/09/2021 10:56

Nowhere
I just thought I’d widen the horizons of those who think English English is the only variety available

Plump82 · 27/09/2021 11:00

@WellLarDeDar

A jab is a vaccine. A jag is a car! :P
A jab is a punch, a jag is a vaccine 😉
Toottooot · 27/09/2021 11:01

Either or - no right or wrong.

mylittleyumyum · 27/09/2021 11:02

Jab to me is a quick, hard blow.

Jag is a stinging injury caused by a sharp point.

I visualise "getting jabbed" as being punched.

So jag.

discombobulatedonion · 27/09/2021 11:04

@TheWoleb

I don’t know any Scottish people, so I don’t know what other words you use, but yes it frustrates me and no I’m not ashamed to admit that. I know I say some words that infuriate people, and I’m okay with that.

OuiOuiBonjour · 27/09/2021 11:05

They are both right.

Jag if you are Scottish ("jaggy" means sharp)

Jab is other dialects.

So many MNers become filled with rage over people who "incorrectly" say "jag". They just don't like Scottish people, I guess.

Geamhradh · 27/09/2021 11:06

@JasonMomoasgirlfriend

Vaccine.

Jab or Jag just sounds stupid to me.

In that case, vaccination or immunisation, surely?
