Teachers need to teach in schools don't they? Wink

@TurnUpTurnip

I don’t really get stuff like this, people are acting like they have no choice but to drive, what do people without cars do, how do they possibly cope 🙄
Confused

Do you really need it spelled out to you?

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 26/09/2021 20:41

Yep, TA here, in rural Scotland with absolutely zero ways to get to work if I don't drive. Too far to walk or cycle and one bus per day into the village so even if I could get there, I couldn't get home. No one else at my school comes in from my direction so no lifts, and taxi would be more than I'd earn in a day. So if I don't get fuelled, I can't get to work. I'm not the only one in my school in this situation so we could quite easily be closed and back to home schooling.

WithCatLikeTread · 26/09/2021 20:41

Do parents with electric cars get special dispensation to not home school?

Asking for a friend…. 😂😂😂

FishesWithWishes · 26/09/2021 20:42

@siestalady

We've not had any "you'll be sewing your own leg back on!" Or "you'll be saving yourself from your own burning house!" From other essential workers?

It hits them where it hurts. The majority of selfish fuckers only care about their tiny immediate universe, not the tiny percentage of people in hospital or who may need urgent life saving treatment unfortunately and I'm sad to say. Maybe something that directly affects them may filter into their brains...

@WithCatLikeTread only if they give the teachers a lift in electric car 😂. Not sure why some people have missed the 😂 in the title.

WithCatLikeTread · 26/09/2021 20:43

I’ll happily do the rounds picking them all up and dropping off if it means I get out of home Ed.

(Ex teacher who retired for a reason lol)

Larryyourwaiter · 26/09/2021 20:44

I work in schools (for a Trust) I’d say most teachers don’t live close to work.
Lots of them either choose not to so they don't run into the students. Many work across different schools as well. It’s not unusual for people to be driving an hour to school.
Where I am just now a good chunk of the support staff are local, not the teachers.

Jellykat · 26/09/2021 20:44

Just thinking at what point do school buses run out of fuel? So maybe not just the teachers who cant get in if we carry on like this..

BungleandGeorge · 26/09/2021 20:44

@Piggywaspushed

bungle there were queues and empty stations at 5am...
Where was that?
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 26/09/2021 20:45

@noblegiraffe

Well, you're clearly totally unorganised and uncommitted

Yep, although a poster upthread was offering piggy backs which might make it a bit easier for me, although probably slower.

It's a pretty hilly walk too, I hope they're fit.

I'm not remotely fit, but sheer desperation goes a long way. Grin

Unfortunately some schools are already experiencing problems from buses being unable to get fuel. It's not a case of when, as it's already happening. Sad
Hercisback · 26/09/2021 20:47

It is considered bad practice to teach within your own community, and is certainly not advised.

This is bollocks.

@Orangejuicemarathoner Your school leadership team needs to calm down if it has spent the weekend preparing for online learning for something that may never happen. Most staff are used to online learning having done it lots last year. What do you need to prepare?!

icedcoffees · 26/09/2021 20:48

Agree. But then you’re expected in work whatever most places, even if that means spending extra time on public transport or getting up at 5am at the weekend to get fuel.

How can you catch public transport that doesn't exist, or access petrol stations at 5am when they don't open until 7am?

Piggywaspushed · 26/09/2021 20:48

Many places bungle!

After doing 2 terms out of 4 and isolation periods the thought of homeschooling for a few days doesn’t worry me in the slightest. My only worry would be the people who then can’t get out to work. It’s not much of a threat really is it? Unless you’d have to take unpaid leave. For the kids who are currently self isolating with no lessons it would probably be an improvement

User5827372728 · 26/09/2021 20:49

Huh?!!! The main reason why I get on so well working in my school is because I live in the community, I know their parents, their grandparents, their siblings, their religious leaders, many students pop round to say hi at the weekend and are free to use my garden! Been there 11 years and love it

BungleandGeorge · 26/09/2021 20:50

You don’t know of any then?

True. But I don't live in catchment because I can't afford it!
Piggywaspushed · 26/09/2021 20:51

Bungle, I'm not going to tell you where I live!

GatoradeMeBitch · 26/09/2021 20:51

I could get the bus to work. It would involve a 30 minute walk to the bus stop, then another 30 minute walk along the side of a busy road at the other end.

But my county has a shortage of bus drivers, and we've been told to not take for granted that a bus will show up. We also have a shortage of taxi drivers. When I was in a taxi last week I could hear the control person haranguing drivers because half the school run for the next day wasn't covered yet.

So... I suppose I could sprout wings and fly to work?

Jellykat · 26/09/2021 20:54

I didn't know that Whinge, next will be public service buses i guess Confused

Last time this happened, 20 years ago, and half the population all tried to get on a bus at the same time......Many thousands of people couldn't get to work for several days

Seriously?! GrinShock[/quote]
yes, seriously - I don't even drive! I couldn't get to work because the buses were already way over capacity before reaching my area.

Yup teachers, should buy flats/houses beside the schools they teach even if there are no flats/houses to be had or they’re too expensive. While you’re at it, warehouse workers at massive out of town depots (eg Amazon) should probably expect their employers to house them in the depot and open schools, nurseries and colleges for people’s kids…. Workers in these warehouses are allowed to have kids, right?

And of course disabled, ill people like me should just piss off because they absolutely don’t need personal transport. I should just stay at home. Always.

No it isn't. As I said, a few younger teachers who rent may live close-ish, but you don't buy in your own catchment area. ( or job hunt where you live) That would be seriously stupid, and asking for trouble - and has caused massive trouble for the few fools I know who have done it, against advice
