So... all things considered... aren't we up sh-t creek?
-gas and electricity prices
-covid (masks? Pfft completed Covid mate (in England))
-council tax hikes
-inflation
-food shortages
-Brexit
-petrol

Sounds like something out of a dystopian nightmare. I'm worried dear reader, and 'keep calm and carry on' doesn't help.

It's all come at once a bit but

Covid - mostly back to normal now but am sure there will be a few restrictions in the winter as hopefully the final door on it

Food shortages - luxury foods (eg out of season foods and fizzy drinks) are short. Hardly the end of the world. My aunt in the US said they have had a lot of food and goods shortages there. Not sure why.

Fuel - idiots that will right themselves in a few weeks. I remember the last major fuel shortage when I was at primary school. I didnt go to the local school and in the end me, mum and my brother had to cycle an hour in the morning to get to school as we were so low in fuel and my dad needed to get to work. Mum could walk to her work in an hour too.

Energy prices. Yep bad. This is the only thing I'm worried about but it is making me think. Do we NEED the TV on or are we just multi screening. Absolutely anal about light off etc. Turn off the outdoor light. Not needed. We have solar powered phone chargers from camping. Get them out.

And say a silent prayer Corbin wasnt in charge

SantiagoSky · 25/09/2021 21:52

I am also asking myself that, FindingMeno. How bad do things have to become for the denial to stop?

LakieLady · 25/09/2021 21:52

I'm not so sure it is just down to panic buying @nosyupnorth.

If we tackled the public health housing emergency - provided more affordable and secure housing (to rent as well as to buy) far fewer people would need UC.

buckeejit · 25/09/2021 21:53

Health & Social care is a bloody mess. My mum is dying of a brain tumour & we've been In Dire need of carers for the last month-social worker had requested x4 times a day for 2 carers & nothing been given as yet. It's so disheartening & so many people in a worse situation than us. The system is fucked.

Pumperthepumper · 25/09/2021 21:53

@Confiscatedpopit

Very odd situation.

A Tory government who are weirdly far too tolerant on those who take the piss (in so many ways) yet zero support for those who just genuinely work hard in normal paying jobs and trying to raise children in a decent way. Those same people who stop at 2-3 children as they can’t afford more. A government who seems to go after those who are very clearly disabled or ill constantly and leave the clearly workshy con artists alone.

A totally weak, pathetic shambles of an opposition government who don’t seem to have a clear policy in them. Or they focus on things that just seem ridiculous in the current climate.

Trying to be a big dog as a country when we need to accept that these days- we are a little chihuahua. We aren’t a world leader anymore and haven’t been for decades. It’s not up to us to save the world or try and parade money we don’t have.

A NHS system that is totally set up wrong and leaks money. This was pre-Tory. Yet we all pay for it and are expected to behave like it’s a wonderful charity we should all be grateful for.

I agree with this - the Tories main policy is deflection, and that’s it. They don’t even care how ridiculous that deflection makes them look.

And sadly, I also agree about the once-groundbreaking NHS. It’s a public-funded service that we’ve been convinced we should be endlessly grateful for. Long waiting lists? No, not lack of funding, covid. Can’t see a GP? Not lack of funding, immigrants. Can’t get to A&E? Not lack of funding, timewasters. It’s been a long campaign of running it into the ground while at the same time convincing us (who pay for it!) that we’re using it wrong.

@MyPatronusIsACat

Anyone who thinks any other Government would have done better, with Brexit, Covid, lack of lorry drivers, NHS crisis, food shortages, and petrol issues blah blah blah, is utterly deluded.

No other Government would have done any better. Just thank your lucky stars that Jeremy Corbyn lost the election, or you'd have had HIM running the show. Shock THEN you'd have good reason to panic!!!

Anyone who thinks any other Government could possibly do a worse job than Johnson & co is utterly deluded.
AlexaShutUp · 25/09/2021 21:54

@FindingMeno

It does cross my mind whether in countries where things have actually gone tits up the public believed it would all be OK until it wasn't iyswim.
That's an interesting question. I hope we don't find out.
Nc4post99 · 25/09/2021 21:54

@Mamamia7962

Of course we have a health service. Two months ago I took my daughter to our local hospital for a check up, her consultant was worried about her condition and we were told to come back the next day as well even though the consultant didn't have appointments but was in surgery all day, just so she could keep an eye on her. The consultant came up in between surgeries to see my daughter. It turned out she needed an emergency operation that day. We were a bit shocked as it was completely unexpected, but I couldn't fault the care she received.

People just like to have something to moan about on here, and I'm sure thrive on the drama of it all.

That’s great, for you but it’s not the same across the board and it’s foolish to assert otherwise. @Mamamia7962 and I’m really glad your daughter got the care she needed and deserved. However, just because you did, doesn’t mean others do.

My father died on a waiting list to see a consultant that he was already under!… cancer, stage 3 and he couldn’t get seen in time. Stabilised and bounced from a and e every time and not moving further up the list as there was ‘nothing that could be done about the wait times’

Please, be mindful, your experience isn’t everyone else’s.

waltzingparrot · 25/09/2021 21:54

I've started watching Euronews on YouTube. It's given me a much better perspective. There are similar problems all over Europe, it's not just us.

Zeal · 25/09/2021 21:54

The UK lacks leadership. It has done for some time across all parties.

Where the UK does score highly, sadly the Conservative Government wrongly takes the credit.

Tealightsandd · 25/09/2021 21:55

Smoking is the answer. Stress relief (much needed for so many) and economy boosting (massive tax income + huge savings on pensions and social care). Add in cake and booze, and we'll getting there.

What would he have done differently?
BoredZelda · 25/09/2021 21:55

Meh, we've been through worse. We'll be OK.

We’ve been through worse. I’ll be ok. But I think there will be a whole load of people who won’t be.

Davros · 25/09/2021 21:56

Nah, it's nothing like the 1970s. We had much better clothes and music

Hessneakingoutagain · 25/09/2021 21:56

Sooo, if you lived in another country, would you come back to live in the U.K. or stay put?

rc22 · 25/09/2021 21:57

I got really down, panicky and upset last night and cried all over my husband! There are other things going on in my life that were the main cause of this but the state of the country contributed to it. The thought that, as far as I'm concerned, people I consider friends voted for this situation makes it all the more difficult.

Anyway, thank God Strictly continues. Little bit of brightness in a shitty world.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/09/2021 21:57

Not to say the U.K. is in a good place but:
There is a global labour shortage- the U.K. is short 100k lorry drivers, the EU is short 400k- this is what happens when you neglect and underpay an entire sector for over a decade. The U.K. (not Torie specific as I think Blair was a huge part of this mentality) thinks manual jobs, labouring is beneath them- we are uni obsessed and have failed to encourage and train the next generations for years.
The gas prices is a global issue- as for the CO2 issue- wasn’t Boris that ensured those factories were US owned- that terrifies me!
The nhs has been destroyed over the years by countless governments and not just the Tories- the UKs obsession keeping entirely free probably hasn’t helped
Brexit- people probably would have muddled through the hike in prices had it not been for covid and the sheer perfect storm of shit.

Ah, the good old Corbin argument , and just how much of our money would he have passed to his metes, and how many of our rights would he have removed?
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/09/2021 21:58

Of course we have a health service

I haven’t been able to see my doctor since the start of lockdown, despite having mental health problems. I ended up paying to see a private pyschiatrist.

Ds can’t get a dental appointment. Dd fell apart in lockdown, still waiting for CAHMS.

I don’t feel like l do have access to a health service really.

DoYouLikeOwls · 25/09/2021 21:58

@FedNlanders

Yes and I think people are in denial
A lot of people including me are not in denial.
katnyps · 25/09/2021 21:58

Yeah add NHS to that list! I'm more worried about that than everything on there

People would have muddled through Brexit if there had been a recognisable positive outcome at the end of that muddling.

Dd fell apart in lockdown, still waiting for CAHMS.

But this is not new. CAMHS has been a disaster for a very long time, long before Covid.
