bah humbug! i don't want to stand sweating in some shopping centre and see some buffoon dressed up in a red nylon suit and nasty beard. poor dd, will she grow up with some sort of complex?

OP posts:
kittylouise · 06/12/2007 12:13

Oh bloody hell - guilt trips.

She made asked me to watch Hish School Musical the film with her at the weekend. That was bad enough.

She will be delighted when I tell her that MUMSNET PEOPLE are telling me I have to take her. I will show her this thread later and she will really laugh!

fizzbuzz · 06/12/2007 12:16

Santa always used to wear green. However when coca cola started to advertise, they changed his suit to red to promte coke.

Carnival · 06/12/2007 12:21

Ahhhhhh, thanks.

I must say he (think it might have been a she, even more confusing) did look quite fetching and very Christmassy

fizzbuzz · 06/12/2007 12:34

Don't think coke were responsible for a sex change as well ..but then who knows what goes into coca cola? It's a completely secret recipe isn't it?

chocchipchristmascake · 06/12/2007 13:00

Dear Daughter of kittylouise.

Your Mum will cause you long-term psychological harm if she doesn't take you to see High School Musical. Everyone else is going, it would be soooo unfair....

Your Mumsnet Auntie

LoveAngelGabriel · 06/12/2007 13:01

YANBU. You're being very sensible, actually!

Showed dd this thread and she did laugh, and agree that you were right about (a) high school friging musical on sodding ice and (b) the new ipod, which she has now upgraded to a request for an iphone .

So as the lesser of two evils I have agreed to think about going to HSM on ice.

Right, now you lot have to take your poor deprived children to see (fake) father christmas. Go on, you know you will love it really!

JingJanglingBexieHoHoHo · 07/12/2007 21:15

We went to the Loch Lomond shores ones last year. It was well dodgy, as the 'Grotto' was a garden shed, lol. But I wanted a photo of Tom with Santa. Even tried getting FIL to dress up, lol.

This year, we went to the one at the House Of Fraser in Glasgow. They do a sleigh ride and present (£4) and the photo with Santa was £4, but we got that free as he arrived late. That was way better than last years dodgy one at Loch Lomond shores!

EmsMum · 07/12/2007 21:22

Go and see santa only if its somewhere nice that you'd want to go to anyway. In our case when DD was the appropriate age it was Lancaster Park.

And DONT let them see more than one santa in the same year as they are very likely to twig its not the same bloke.

LOONEYplayingachristmasTUNEy · 07/12/2007 21:39

I wish my ds's face did light up etc. but he's always either cried (when younger) or this year (at school fayre - will be 5 in March) he was happy in the queue and then all nervous and hiding behind me when we were in there Never mind.

pollywollybauble · 07/12/2007 21:48

dd gets a santa at playschool and the local round table santa on a sleigh and his elves knocking on the doors and having a chat.....thats plenty of santas IMO

bambam30 · 08/12/2007 10:08

we have just had a visit from santa!!!!! lol dh and i were discussing going out and takink dc to see santa but we all ill so i got a coouple of prewrapped selection boxes that i always have in just in case and told dh to put them in kitchen on table and shout me he did and as normal kids came running too and we went into elaborate detail how dh husband had heard a noise and looked around and just saw a swish of red i said i had heard hoofs and what sounded like a horse snoddering and gosh look what was on the table...... well you should have seen dc faces and eldest started shouting that he knew cos hge had 'heard' sleigh bells! we then rang my mom in the orkneys and she told him that she had just seen 6 reindeers and a sleigh fly past her window and oh my gosh spot her dog had just come back with a new bone.....so don't waste your money do something yourself you will feel truly wonderful and your kids think its magical!!!1

2mum · 08/12/2007 10:11

I would love to take both of my kids to see Santa but ds2 panics and wont go near Santa (he has autism) so ive only got pictures of Ds1 with Santa

ChristmasSendsMePsycho · 08/12/2007 10:28

Re the High school musical.....

come live in my house.....ALL my five love the film, (including the boys), and have it pretty much on repeat, (film and cd!!!!![argh emoticon].

I even woke this morning to my 5yo DS2 singing "NO NO NO" song at the top of his voice while sat on the loo![bleary tired emoticon] as this was at 6am!!!!

sooooooooooooooo...............cos I have to live it HSM on ice is not on (do you hear me psycho babies....NOTON!!)

however.....santa visiting is done as psycho mummy here is the one crimson with excitement

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 08/12/2007 11:01

Make sure it's a decent one first. Ours was a bit duff, the present was a mag and cheapo pens, he seemed slightly pissed, no queue at all, wnder why...you get the picture!

Not much point if your 4 year old is cynical once it's over

skyatnight · 09/12/2007 00:05

Agree with Twinkly - we went to see one today. Didn't intend to, there just happened to be a grotto at the garden centre. The queue took ages and it was decidedly underwhelming. dd was confused because he kept going on about Santa and eventually she piped up with 'Father Christmas!'. Oh deer (we'd forgotten to mention his other name).

I'm sure even really small children can tell there is something not right, with the false beard and everything. Based on today's experience, I won't do it again unless we make the effort to find a really good Santa (in a proper cave or a wooded glade or on a train!). Otherwise, it's best left as a mystical, magical, imagination thing.

lazawreath · 09/12/2007 00:13

my parents took ds1 to cadbury garden centre today and they queued for an hour and a half to see santa.

Bellbird · 10/12/2007 13:12

DD(5)saw Santa yesterday at a Christmas Party. He was tall and very thin and had a squeaky West Country accent. Needless to say DD was completely unconvinced, but was politely cheerful towards him. She whispered to me afterwards, 'He was definitely not the real one, because the real one is huge and has a proper Father Christmas voice, and wears brown.'
