YANBU

(humbug!)

If she and you don't want to go, don't.

We aren't going to some over priced, long queue grotto this year either. DD saw FC at her school Christmas Fair - was free, he was on stage, the girls lined up by the stage, got a minute or so to talk with him and got a gift. Nice and simple, and you know what - DD was just as pleased with the experience!

kittylouise · 06/12/2007 11:00

Right, I am being a sentimental old fool, but bear with me. Just been on another thread about nativity plays and I realised that dd (age 11) will never be in a christmas concert/play again as she is now ins senior school, and is growing up.

She will also never again be crimson with excitement at the thought of going to Santa's grotto.

So...even though I am usually a cynical old cow and the thought of queueing and waiting for ages for father christmas used to really piss me off...please take your kids whilst you can.

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 06/12/2007 11:06

she did see him at a nursery party last year and nearly passed out with excitment. i know what you mean kitty that is why i am torn between utter horror at these things and the pleasure she might get from it.

bobsyouruncle · 06/12/2007 11:11

I didn't last year & decided I would this year, then decided I couldn't really afford the money and now kittylouise has made me go & change my mind again fgs!?

sweetbean · 06/12/2007 11:22

Sheherazadetheswedishjulbok

I also Hate thoughts grotto things!! Having to pay a stupid amount of money so that my dd can sit on some random blokes knee who then proceeds to breath on her with his cigerette breath ........ No Thanks

Anyway we all know that the REAL Father Christmas is much to busy at this time of year getting ready for Christmas eve so he doesn't have time to be sitting around in a grotto !!! (well that what i tell my dd anyway!)

ColdPenguin · 06/12/2007 11:24

Absolutely agree with Kitty.

It is too easy to forget there really are precious few years when children are old enough to understand all about Santa, and still young enough to believe in it all.

SheherazadetheSwedishjulbok - To you that man in the shopping centre may be 'some buffoon dressed up in a red nylon suit and nasty beard'. I'll bet my bottom dollar that's not what your daughter thinks though (assuming she's of the age we are talking about). To her, he's the amazing, magical man that everyone tells her about that can fly and gives presents and owns reindeers and has elf helpers......etc, etc....

Pretty soon he will be 'some buffoon dressed up in a red nylon suit and nasty beard' to her too.

kittylouise · 06/12/2007 11:28

Ooh so glad you didn't all go sod off, kitty, you judgemental old trout, you obviously can't rememember how hard it is to look after little children.

However, with all my guff about valuing them when they are small, I had to draw the line when my dd asked (begged) to go and see High School Musical on Ice (vomit emoticon)

You have to draw the line somewhere!!!

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 06/12/2007 11:30

pmsl @ high school musical on ice!

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 06/12/2007 11:31

btw it is SheherazadetheSwedishjulbok i have name changed again in a desperate bid to win a mumsnet prize.

chocchipchristmascake · 06/12/2007 11:37

What's wrong with High School musical On Ice? Seriously, it's not some dodgy group. Sounds very entertaining. I think you should reconsider.

IorekByrnison · 06/12/2007 11:49

I still have a vague memory of going to see Santa in a department store somewhere as a small child. I asked him for a pony. He laughed at me and sent me off with some crappy bit of plastic. And he smelled of fags.

That's when I knew that life wasn't going to be as much fun as I'd been led to believe.

bobsyouruncle · 06/12/2007 11:52

Well, if you've talked me into taking my dc into going to see santa I insist you take your dd to see High School Musical on ice. She will be crimson with excitement, take her while you can

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 06/12/2007 11:53

ib - lol - that sounds like the opening line from an american baby boomer semi-autobiographical novel.

kittylouise · 06/12/2007 11:55

Oh bollocks that'll teach me to be smug and all-knowing, won't it.

Bobsyouruncle, do I have to go. Really? High School Musical will be hours of cringeing, you only have to queue for 20 minutes and see santa for 5. Snot fair, waaaaah!

Carnival · 06/12/2007 11:57

If you live anywhere near Loch Lomond, we were there last Saturday, there was no queue, it was free and Santa was wearing a green suit! When did Santa start wearing green? DP says it has got something to do with a backlash against coca cola?

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 06/12/2007 11:58

ohh, where abouts at loch lomond?

amidaiwish · 06/12/2007 11:59

oooh, where is High School musical On Ice on?!
would love to take the DDs

but not going to see santa! think they'll be scared (my excuse, am sticking to it)

bobsyouruncle · 06/12/2007 12:05

Now it may be hours of cringing for you, but think of your dd's happy little smiling face gazing in delight at the ice dancers... God no, I'll let you off, don't take her.

chocchipchristmascake · 06/12/2007 12:05

KL - you'd have to have a heart of ice not to go. I think you'll come back converted and ready to start her off as a little cheerleader.

PatsyCline · 06/12/2007 12:08

YANBU. But are you anywhere near a National Trust property? We always take our DDs to one to see Santa and so far we've had no queues and just a very pleasant experience for all of us!

Carnival · 06/12/2007 12:11

Loch Lomond Shores, just outside the Thorntons

Carnival · 06/12/2007 12:13

Good tip about the National Trust properties, I forgot about those. Am a member too
