A lot of assumptions here. Calling people selfish for filling up when they don’t need to. Who are any of you to make these assumptions. I filled up enough today to ensure I can I need do next weeks school journeys and club drop offs and pick ups that I can’t do walking.
I did my weekly shopping by walking so that I’m saving the fuel and also walked for other journeys that were close by.

These are my reasons and like most of the people here are doing what they need to function for them and their families.

Get off your high horses.
@DressBitch me too! Nearly down to the red zone and not sure I have the bladder room to join a queue 😬 hope you get some!
I know that feeling!

You too. Good luck!

There have been lots of videos of people filling up multiple large containers with petrol, people spitting on each other etc.

That’s despicable behaviour.

roxyro · 25/09/2021 18:28

Quite a few of you are totally missing the point. There was/isn’t a shortage but the panic buying, selfish twats have now caused one and yes, the press have a lot to answer for.

HelpNeedCoolUsername8 · 25/09/2021 18:31

I have to go to work like everyone else but I don’t drive an ambulance or a police car or food delivery van so I’ll just fill up when my tank is empty. If there’s no fuel available when that happens then I guess I’ll have a long walk. I won’t be happy about it but I would definitely rather that than guiltily sit here with a full tank of fuel that I don’t need yet while while a nurse can’t get to work or an ambulance can’t get to a rescue. For that reason, I agree with the OP. And perhaps the luxury trips could be put on hold for now? Just a thought.

HelpNeedCoolUsername8 · 25/09/2021 18:33

Oh and I haven’t missed any points. Well aware that the issue is caused by the media/panic buying and not by an actual fuel shortage.

Glittersparkle76 · 25/09/2021 18:33

Couldn't agree more, the poster of this comment is the epitome of selfish,4 cars filled up?,selfish bastards.

And when you say long walk, do you mean 40-50 miles a day or..? Actually, probably more than that, it's not like I can skip down the motorway.
CheshireChat · 25/09/2021 18:42

I think if you take into account all the people who can't (or wouldn't be allowed) to WFM, people who rely on a car for the school run, people who have been or are going on holidays, disabled people and those with caring responsibilities, those who have medical appointments coming up etc etc it's not hard to imagine why there's queues when there's not much guarantee they'll be able to top up during the coming weeks or so. Because of course they won't just hope for the best as if things don't work out in time, it's them that'll be in trouble and I doubt there would be a lot of sympathy forthcoming.

Eatdrinkbemerry · 25/09/2021 18:44

@HelpNeedCoolUsername8 I agree that luxury travel should be put on hold.

@pelosi - majority of people are filling because they need to. There is a small majority of selfish people out there who no matter how much we post here will make no difference to them.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 25/09/2021 18:47

How did we get ourselves into this stupid situation where people NEED petrol?

Its ridiculous to rely on driving

Petrol damages the environment, and is going to run out soon anyway.

Any one of these drivers saying they need petrol and they have to drive could be banned from driving tomorrow anyway, from an unexpected, and largely insignificant medical problem. That happens all the time

Petrol giant Essar on brink of collapse
Stanlow refinery, which supplies a sixth of Britain’s petrol, in crisis talks with HMRC

One of Britain’s biggest oil refineries is teetering on the brink of collapse, piling further potential pressure on crisis-riven petrol stations.

The Stanlow oil refinery in Ellesmere Port, which supplies about a sixth of Britain’s road fuel, is in urgent talks with HM Revenue & Customs over hundreds of millions of pounds it has to start repaying this week unless it can agree a new deal.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 25/09/2021 18:47

We need to move our whole culture away from cars

Happyher · 25/09/2021 18:48

I can understand people who need to use their car for work or other essential needs but not the ones who like me who don’t have to. I haven’t filled up since Monday. I’ve got half a tank left which would normally last me a week and there’s nowhere I really have to go that I can’t walk. The great British public are greedy and selfish

VEGAS2016 · 25/09/2021 18:48

A poster filled up 4 cars, 2 that aren’t even in fucking use!!? There lies the problem, complete arseholes like that!

I’ll have no choice to fill up in the morning, working 12 hours as a HCP, let’s hope
I can get some eh?

Lots of jobs rely on driving. Your Amazon Prime delivery driver can't do it on a bus.
FedNlanders · 25/09/2021 18:50

I'm rural and a care worker. I absolutely can not work to work, there is not even a path.

Don't be so dramatic. Very, very few of us will ever be banned from driving during working age.
Glittersparkle76 · 25/09/2021 18:50

Yesterday my son had a hospital appointment as he has cancer and had chemotherapy,my plan was to get fuel on the way,as I do every Friday,we left home early and because the roads were so gridlocked with people buying fuel it was a choice of waiting or carrying on to the hospital so he wouldn't be late.Due to Covid, the chemotherapy day centre are quite insistent that patients turn up on time for their allotted appointment time so they keep the numbers low in the unit.It was a choice of him being late and possibly not being able to have his chemo,or chance it and travel with very low fuel.I chose the latter and got him there, his time slot ran slightly over so I had to leave him there and go and pick my little girl up from school, ended up being late due to gridlocked roads and then go all the way back (25miles) to the hospital to pick him up.I knew there's no way on earth I'd make it back there with what I had in my tank,I was basically running on fumes,it took me going to 4 different petrol stations and queuing for 45minutes to get fuel just so I could go back and pick him up after treatment.I was really panicking because if the 4th garage I visited didn't have any we would be stuffed,my car wouldn't have made it to another garage. My son would have been 25miles away following his chemo with no way for me to go and get him.All because people are panic buying and being completely selfish gits,it makes my blood boil.
For people saying others should budget ahead and not let their cars get so low on fuel, some people don't always have spare cash to be able to top up before payday,or when you live on a tight budget and unexpected costs come up,ie my handbrake died a death and I had to get a new one last week, its not so easy to plan ahead or be psychic so I know what will happen in the future. So posts where they say they filled up their own 2 cars plus their children's cars (who are away at uni so won't be using them anyway!) really pissed me off!!

Because for large parts of the country public transport is non existent or very limited.

Add in house prices in cities being so expensive people now live further away.

It's not difficult to see why cars are needed. I need mine otherwise I couldn't get to work. If I had a medical issue that meant I couldn't drive I would need to try and get a lift or give up my job.

I live in a small town with very limited employment. Almost all travel out with for work.

1Dandelion1 · 25/09/2021 18:51

When I started driving my father taught me to aim to fill up at 1/2 tank and never go below 1/4 tank, I have practiced this for years.
Luckily I filled up last weekend so I'll be ok for a few weeks (longer if I WFH) but I feel for people like my friend who's worrying and I'll lend her my car if she needs it.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/09/2021 18:51

I honestly don't even know if I can walk. I mean, there are some rural lanes I could walk down, but let's be honest here, I'm probably gonna end up as road kill.
NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 25/09/2021 18:52

I have a motability car and need to get to the hospital in the city for my treatment regularly
I have a compromised immune system and cannot afford a taxi both ways as I’m in the outskirts of city

I haven’t been able to fill up

tigger1001 · 25/09/2021 18:54

@Orangejuicemarathoner

We need to move our whole culture away from cars
The only way to do that is a decent public transport system. Not likely to happen anytime soon I fear. Buses get cut here not added to.
Whitefire · 25/09/2021 19:00

People need to use common sense.
Fill up your tank when it is low and make it last.

If I'm working a tank lasts less than 6 days, can't make it last more.

Can you cycle your child on their school run? Or buddy up with another parent and car share?

DC all walk to school.

Can you car share with someone at work, or work from home a bit more?

No one lives near me, plus I need my car once I'm at work. Not allowed to work from home.

Can you order your groceries online to be delivered? Or cycle to your local shops daily to get just what you need for the day?

Do that, small shops round corner or go to supermarket on way home from work.

I know you will say "so this wasn't aimed at you" but the point is many people already do limit their car use, the ones like a couple of parents that DH sees everyday driving their DC to school which for one is less than a 5 minutes walk, the other barely a minute are not going to change (and they drive straight home again) The 5 minutes one probably takes nearly as long in the car as you can't drive the route you walk, plus there are lights.

I have about half a tank so should hopefully be ok to get to work on Wednesday, hopefully I'll be able to get some at that point, even if I do have to use the £££ service station ones. I'm only not out being part of the panic buying because I really can't be bothered to move off my chair.
